Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

My own brother keeps an Avon 4.65 rib with a 50 hp 4 stroke outboard on a good roadworthy trailer at a rural secluded residential premises which is unattended all day and many weekends with no security whatsoever and no matter how often I bring the matter of security up I always get the same answer , "it been there for years and nobody has stolen it". I also know these thieves (local people) operate in this area and it is only a matter of time before the boat is interfered with. It could be hitched on and in Belfast within the hour.
We all need to be more vigilant.

Seasport 4.65? Which 4 stroke has he on it just out of interest?

Dun Laoghaire Harbour has its own harbour police, they just got a brand new 4x4 (or van) so they can sit more comfortably all day and night - at least I havent seen them doing anything else around.

Dunlaoire Harbour police have a new van to carry wheel clamps! No interest in any other misdemeanour's happening on their doorstep (Or is it Harbour?):)

50 HP Mercury/Mariner, perfect outboard for the boat, goes extremely nicely.

    Good news everyone...

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2015/0707/713224-boats/

"Boating equipment worth €150,000 have been recovered by gardaí investigating the theft of boat engines. The haul included 74 outboard engines, 10 boats and eight boat trailers. [...] "

EDIT: I guess that's what catastrophy was talking about.

They probably sold all the 4 stroke stuff. Doubt that a gang would go for only 2-strokes

Maybe they were robbed in the 70's :) going by some of these https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153191181543001.1073742367.167613868000&type=3

I wonder who valued that at 150k? I would have put it nearer half that. Most of it needs a serious Fergal resto job.

Some of those engines look so old they might have come from the parts boxes in Fergal's attic or shed! :D:D
The "proceeds of crime" values are always overestimated - same for the drug hauls - to boost the "success" figures. (Not slagging the guy on the street, it's the politicos.) In my corner of the SW, in 1922 there was a copshop with sargeant and 4 in the village, twenty years ago it was a sargeant and one, 10 years ago it was one garda working different shifts, today it is one garda working a much-enlarged area (about 400 sq. miles!) and he has to share "the car" with the two guys in the next town!
It will be interesting to see who and what happens when the case goes to court.

Have to agree looking at the photos, a lot of the engines look to be at least 30 years old.
Maybe they were the robbed engines they didnt bother exporting.
No mention of any arrests. Hopefully they will follow.
Wonder how active the unit/ lock up was?, maybe the stuff is sitting there years.

That would have been the CE certification sticker it looks something like this with the model number.

    evinrude_serial_number.jpg

There should also be an ID plate on the transom clamps like this.

    suzuki-tag-2-300x214.jpg

I know mercury and a few others do have the serial number on frost bungs but I'm not sure the one in the add is one as would expect to see some letters like S for short shaft or L for long, maybe a suzuki owner could check it out.

    Looks a bit fishy.

I'm waiting for the auction - I need an integrated (?) (built-in) fuel tank for my 3hp mercury! New it's about €150 including shipping which is probably more than my engine is worth!

She's dodgy alright, rang the person selling it, he doesn't know what make of rib he had it on.
Service history is also in a different language as it was imported.
I've found the same lad trying to sell it 8 months ago.
When asked about the hours, he sounded puzzled and then asked how to check, he assured me he only used it amfew times.

Since been reported for some investigation.

Maybe check a local garden machinery shop and see if they have anything that will fit? It might be not quite as big and you might need a few adaptors but better than nothing

Taken from Carlingford sailing club FB page

It is with a heavy heart that we have to let you know that the remaining two engines have been stolen from the club. If you can share this post to shame the people that have done this. The engines are distinctively marked so someone will know something....We believe this happened on Tuesday Night so if anyone seen anything on the Ghan Road please contact us or PM us.
