Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Buying first Jetski

    Hi all,

    I'm just looking into buying my first jetski as I've always had a thrill for one and anytime I drove one I enjoyed every minute of it. Before I go buying one I'd just like to hear from anyone with experience in the game.

    My main queries are the following;
    1. Is there a licence or permit required to legally drive a jet ski?
    2. Is there many areas around Leinster where jet skis are permitted. I assume there is no issue with the coast but a lot of the lakes have banned them.
    3. The ski I have in mind is a Yamaha GP1200R or GP800R. Has anyone any experience iwth either of these?
    4. Would I be better of waiting till we get further into winter to purchase or will the drop in price not be that significant?

    I look forward to hearing from anyone with experience as I have found information in this area is hard to come by.

    Cheers:-)

    Hi B4Dar and welcome, you don't need a licence or permit but insurance would be advisable. https://www.yachtsman.ie/personal-watercraft-insurance.html

    Where you can use them may be up to the local council so check with them "there are a lot of issues with them on the coast and only a few places you can use them"

    I would hate to buy a secondhand one without knowing what sort of life it had as the engines only have a short lifespan because they spend most of their time at high RPM and they are expensive to rebuild.

    The best thing you can do is join one of these clubs and ask their advice and maybe buy a ski off them as once you have one you will always want a bigger, better and faster one :D

    Thanks for your response Fergal.

    My main concern is if there is actually any locations relatively close that allows them as it would be a real pain if I had to travel across the country to get any use.

    I'll to a bit more investigation in the clubs you linked me to :-)
