Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Anybody know anything about this trial?

It looks good, but I cant see anything on the website about dates and if it is over or is yet to start.

Definitely something I would be interested in. Is it legit?

    It's legit.

I have a SamKnows box myself from about the start of May.

I believe the current trial period is until November I believe at which point you're allowed to keep the routers!

    Good stuff thanks

What does the router do? whats the benefit of keeping it?

Did you wait long before they contacted you? (Just filled in the form)

I have one too. It connects to your router via a cable and at quiet times it does speed tests to determine your line statistics.

Despite what is being reported Samknows have been running this survey in Ireland for a good while now, I have my router since October last year.

    @AlanS181824
Where did you read about being able to keep the router after the 'trial' period is over?

It's on their website, on their FAQ if I remember correctly.

It says that after the trial period which is currently until November (could be extended) that the router is yours to keep.

Found the FAQ from their website.
What happens to the SamKnows Whitebox at the end of the project?
At the end of the project, you may keep the SamKnows Whitebox for your own personal use.

Will they send different firmware when the trial is over.

Apparently they help you install DD-WRT or go back to Tp Links firmware.

Saw that online so how accurate it is I don't know.

I actually thought they wouldn't let me sign up so I used 2 different emails both got accepted so now I regularly get an email asking me to finish my sign up :P

I was on the European trial a few years back and got an email from them a few months ago regarding the Ireland specific trial and got the new box delivered about two weeks ago.

I have it set it and it's running grand, just like before.

    It's very quick.

I am on the European trial too. (since January 2012) I seem to remember that it was for 2 years. How did you stop being on the trial and did you keep your device?

What model is the new device?

The trail was over for me(over two years) like yourself at this stage. I was allowed to keep the device, but they are fairly dated right now. Great if you throw dd-wrt firmware on them, which most seem to do when the trial is over.

The new Samknows is a a TP-link WDR-3600.it does support dual band as well, meaning it can keep on eye on both 2.4Ghz and 5GHz traffic and make's sure not to run any tests if the traffic is high. Which is a plus since I'm using an Asus RT-AC66U router myself and use both 2.4Ghz and 5GHz on different devices.

Anyone get monthly reports or results yet? How does it compare to Speedtest under Upstream, Downstream, Latency and Packet Loss etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,702 ✭✭✭flutered

this is my thir year with them, i signed up under a different email and got a newer box, i have been delving into it, funnely enough it has two ariels to pick up different outside wireless, feck all going on in my house, well bar one thing, the new box is a tp-wdr3800 or an n800 dualband,

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 5,575 ✭✭✭AlanS181824

Does anyone know how to install DDWRT on one of these?

I've the WDR 3600, my friend gave me his WDR 3600 too as he's gone to Australia.

They apparently never responded to his emails so long story short I have it now.

    I followed this tutorial here

    http://blog.nyr.bz/hacking-the-whitebox/

But I get suck on setting up the ftp server.

    Anyone have any idea?

They do, the run custom firmware.

But apparently they help install DD WRT when you're finished.

Got my first report this week. I am on Eircom's 50MB Unlimited package although I think something has changed recently as I am getting 65+MB.

Thanks. I signed up. I'd really like to take part.

However, who are these people? I can't find any information about who they are. They don't seem to be involved with the European Union.
    Didn't read their homepage properly.

    That's really unfortunate!

Depending on your info they give you the corresponding box.

If you say your house is gibibit wired and you're 100Mb or even 70Mb internet you'll get the WDR 3600.

Other than that you seem to get the other one.

I was just going to say the same thing. If you're running a 20Mb line, they have no reason to send the WDR3600, as the wr-741nd will handle that fine.

I'm guessing it's the Wan to Lan throughout affects its ability to maintain connections over a certain speed and as such, they use the WDR3600.

I was worried the WDR3600 wasn't fast enough to handle a 200Mb line, but couldn't find out wan to lan stats on it. However, I couldn't see Samknows sending out routers that couldn't handle the speed of the line.

I wonder if one were to upgrade their line while using the wr-741nd, would SamKnows supply the WDR3600 to aid in the extra speed for testing.

I didn't get asked at all about my setup apart from what package I had from Eircom, and the lady on the sponsored thread said everyone'll get gigabit port routers. Maybe ring and say you need gigabit Ethernet for your day to day business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,821 ✭✭✭phill106

I replied back to rihanna on the sponsered thread, awaiting a response as it clearly states that gigabit ethernet routers would be provided, not 10/100.
Think i got the bottom of the old bag, hopefully they can swap it out.

That's pretty normal. Give it a few more working days.

My whitebox arrived today, it's the TP-Link WDR3600. Can't wait to put OpenWRT on it at the end of this.

Can you let me know how you get on with OpenWRT?

Maybe even a step by step if it works?

I've 2 of the WDR3600's, one I use for SamKnows and the other I got off a friend.

    Thanks.

In fairness to Samknows, I'll have to run it for at least a year before flashing it with DD-WRT/OpenWRT. But you said you got stuck on setting up an FTP server - I'd personally set up an Apache HTTP server to download the binary. We can help you once you have apache up and running.

Signed up to the European trial in July 2012. I was about to take the router offline and flash it so I emailed Samknows to check if all was ok and here is the reply

The next report for Europe project will be based on data collected during October 2014. Can we ask you to keep your device connected until November in your location? We understand it’s much longer than two years, but we would appreciate if you can continue to participate until then.

After that, you may keep the device for your own use.

Thank you for your continued support.

So just be aware that they want you to keep this online for at least 2 years

Yeah, my friend tried to return it but no one responded and I guess emigration waits for no one :P

I haven't a clue how to do that to be honest, ftp really confuses me.

    Would you mind PMing me?

    Oh thanks for that.

I guess by the time November comes the WDR3600 will be probably very outdated.
