Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    I am :)

Just a question to anyone that knows about the UCD health screening, I know that you have to pay 225 for the health screening, but if you are lacking one of the injections and they have to give it to you, is this covered in the 225 or is it extra?

    cheers

  • Registered Users Posts: 3 Bluegirl93

I rang earlier and they weren't that helpful , but you should be covered with the 225.............I think :)

I'll see you up there :)

Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone would be able to enlighten me about research opportunities such as intercalation and PhDs for irish medical schools, particularly TCD. As I tried looking at their page but their wasn't too much info, and I think it would be difficult to contact them about it at this particular time. I'm asking because uk medical schools have quite a few options of intercalated degrees and you can even go to other universities to do them in some instances, whereas TCD seem only to have biomedical sciences.

Thank you to anyone that helps :)

Generally Trinity is a persons first choice so nobody generally turns it down, unless they put it down as a second choice behind pharmacy/Dentistry IE (they may have got a high Hpat and a leaving cert of 550 or so ) , if these people want to repeat and get their first choice the following year then the points should go down , And i have a couple of friends doing med in galway and they say its the best craic ever :) hope this helps

I know when I was getting screened and I didn't have my BCG I had to cover the cost of that and organize the vaccine externally because UCD doesn't give that vaccine, though they were able to point me in the right direction! but this was 2 years ago now. Hope that helped :)

When do we find out if we're eligible to skip premed?

It depends on the college I think! I already got a letter from RCSI telling I've got the 5 year course but I got A1's in bio and chem so i knew I had it! :o

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 134 ✭✭Librium

if you got 6 A1s, let's say, including honours maths, 625 points, what is the minimum score in hpat you'd need to get an offer on first round?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 140 ✭✭whistlin_boy

I think it is 172 points from the HPAT.

    735
    -565 (625 adjusted for medicine)
    172 HPAT points required

    :D

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 134 ✭✭Librium

do you know what percentile that is for hpat scores?

    1. Yeah, my status says the same - I've accepted the offer on CAO so I'm not too sure why?
    2. Yep, booked for Monday :)

Hey guys, this is probably a stupid question but do the extra points for HL Maths bring the total you can get in the LC up to 565 or does it stay at 560?
    Thanks :)

my tcd.ie thingy says the same.

hang on, whats the health screening thing about? is that the thing you pay approx 250€ for to do blood tests and vaccinations? If it is, my gp is doing mine, hope all goes grand :)

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 134 ✭✭Librium

I agree, but please don't do it here.

It's kind of ironic though, considering the course it's being done for.

In in for the money? Oh no your worship.

Hi there, yes, I did it on the last weekend so it was pretty close to the actual HPAT, so I found it was all pretty fresh in my mind. They work through lots of samples and you get a good bit of practice material too, plus you do the mock exam under actual conditions which was really helpful for timing. So yes, I'd recommend it! And it was worth it since I'm now starting Med in UCD, first choice! :)

I'm sorry but I don't agree with this at all. GPs provide a service and it's our responsibility to get this health screening before we register. It is by no means the GPs responsibility to give this screening free of charge.

Perhaps you should direct your anger at either the university you are entering or the government. GPs are well within their rights to charge for this service. I'm sure nearly all do charge and rightly so.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 134 ✭✭Librium

scabby ****s shouldn't be charging their , make enough already

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 27,263 CMod ✭✭✭✭spurious

The problem seems to be some doctors are doing it for free, while others are charging.
Different reasons for doing medicine I suppose. An early lesson.

In fairness though the GP has to pay to buy in these vaccines. They shouldn't have to pay for this out of their own pocket just because it's for a med student. GP'S in general are very good to med students, as in a lot won't charge patients who are studying med if they're in for a regular appointment.

No one I know of, yet 3 or so could have gotten it of my friends. One of my friends got 203 I think? So he was well able to get Medicine. He 585 in the real LC so... he was well in there.

It is extremely possible with a good HPAT.

less dependence on the hpat the better imo! its best to be aiming for 600. You dont know how the hpat will go.

    good luck:)

Last year, registration was done in Fresher's week, and med was on the Friday morning. I suspect the story's the same or similar (although registration's being changed a lot this year...)

Also: someone's started the Trinity Med Class of 2017 on Facebook - very useful to join it.

Registration is online this year isn't it? You just have to collect your student card etc during Freshers week.

Yep, myself thank God, 545 + 195 :) (though 2 or 3 subjects were well down on what i had hoped to get).

Hope all the contributers were happy with how things panned out for them :)

I just did the free seminars they were offering and from what they offered in those two days I'd advise just stick to ********...The Aussie chap ******** sends over is a genius, really focusses you in the run-up to the Hpat, especially if you really put the work in on the drills, exams etc.
