I think the acting is pretty decent all round tbh. There are some that are a little rougher then others but nothing that breaks the tone or anything.

My only issue with the ep. - the very jarring role reversal and swift powerplay by the blonde preggers wan, her brother reduced to dufus status WAY too quickly, like in a single scene he's a loser and she's calling the shots.

What? That's exactly how it happened in the book and very realistic. That's how power struggle work sometimes. He still considers himself her "superior". I don't see how that is unrealistic. confused.gif
I thought the ep. was just as good as last week, loved Aiya (it's Aiya this week....last week it was Arya, and week one it was Aiya rolleyes.gif) training with the Spanish swishy dude...great scene + fat king jolly and Jaime Lanister facing off, talking first kills. etc.

Agreed. I thought it was significantly better than last week, but if there's anything I've learned from listening to opinions online it's that everyone's opinion is different and sometimes it's very hard to understand a different opinion.

Arya: Actress is perfect for the role. You can already see that she's trying to figure out how to kill the entire royal family. Sansa comes across as so..wet in comparison.

She's really doing an exceptional job of bringing the character to life. Child actors can easily drag a show like this down when they are cast poorly, but they seem to have pulled it off. Arya is a fan favorite character on both page and screen.

Yeah, Arya's is one of my favourites and the young actress is capturing her spirited temperament perfectly.

Third episode was a bit slower again, but obviously to introduce new characters into the show.

Still great stuff (and yes, Arya is perfect in the show).

Good episode, but I found it a bit too stagey in places. I had the same problem with Rome and it made it unwatchable for me after a while. It's a problem usually due to a combination of dialogue-laded scripts, actors recruited from theatre and bland directing. It's early days yet though and the good bits more than made up for it.

I'm really enjoying the story and will probably check out the books over the summer.

Best episode yet. Maybe the actors are more familiar with their roles, got more comfortable and started showing some proper emotion. Excellent character development.

Not too sold on Littlefinger, and Renly should have been handsomer?

    Especially liked Viserys' squeals :)

Told ya it's "Aya" in the first episode!!
Was expecting the episode to end on a real cliffhanger.

Edit: Did Catelyn look less wrinkled this episode? Make up for King's Landing I suspect :)

Pretty strong irish presence in the show with Catelyn Stark, littlefinger and Joffrey. Although so far Jack Gleeson as Joffrey is the only one of the three who stands out, which is impressive considering how few scenes he's had so far.

Just on Littlefinger, imo he's a very weak character at the start of the books. He gets much better as it goes through

Even in the book they have maps and an appendix containing all the Houses and the characters/family trees in them, so you're not getting anything "spoiled" or learning them the wrong way.

Pre-internet I doubt they would have dared to introduce so many characters and "houses" so fast, but nowadays people can go on the internet for that guide, easily rewatch the episodes, everyone knows it comes from a book, etc.

I'm impressed with the show overall, though I do think the casting is bad in places.

Lena Hedly is a poor choice for Cersei Lannister, it's as if the actress hasn't read the books and doesn't really know what the character is supposed to be like.

The actor playing The Hound has no presence, not at all scary or intimidating, even allowing that he hasn't had a lot of screen time or lines. Ditto Ser Illyn Payne (why is he so short?).

Excellent casting for Ned Stark, Tyrion and Jaime Lannister (anyone else think he looks exactly like Prince Charming in Shrek?)

I just assumed that was his name, no?
The back and forth between him and Ned was nice. Blatantly open about their dislike of eachother. The quips about how nice his armour is etc

Ian McElhinney (Barristan Selmy) is Irish too I think (well Nordie :) )

I can't think of any major complaints with the show so far.It has been chopped and changed somewhat but whats surprising me is that some of the stuff that they have added is so good it seamlessly fits in with martins stuff.I thought Roberts speech about his first kill and Mormonts conversation with Rakahro (not Jhogo as in the books) was really interesting.

They have to move the plot along at a faster pace for instance Jon fights with and befriends the other boys at the wall in the space of an episode.I think the actings been mostly first rate with some small missteps.I don't know what people are talking about with aiden gillen- hes a first class actor who looks, moves and simultaneously charms and repels like littlefinger.Cersei is supposed to come across as kind of wooden -thats how she initially seemed in the books as well.I thought the syrio/arya scene was an special delight.Anyhoo I feel like the show has been climbing up the rollcoaster hill and we are just about to take the plunge. Its gonna be all action from here on out.

So far so good. The T&A is a bit much from time to time as in not really needed apart from trying to build a bit of a reputation for itself as they say about all the good porn movies its not really necessary to develop the plot

Overall it has great potential and it is enjoyable

It has served the plot. They could have had characters just talking about what happened off screen, but that's not how a good screenplay is written. Show, don't tell. Should they shield the viewer from the violence and cruelty as well? If you're an adult you've seen it before and there is no rational reason that it should bother you.

Bit patchy in parts. Felt rushed. Some of the poor casting could cost the show later down the line.

to be fair there is plenty of T and A in the books as well

Indeed and I wonder if people will complain that there's too much violence as well or if that's something that's just more acceptable.

Has always been like that in this country. Violence - whoop whoop, A Woman's special parts - Somebody please think of the children.

Thought I would mention since I spotted it in Eason's today. All of the books in this series are in a 2 for 1 deal at the moment. Won't comment on the 4th episode as it seems most people are waiting for Sky Atlantic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 724 ✭✭✭jonsnow

quite enjoyed tonight. The show takes you off in slightly different tangents then the books at times ie.theon/tyrion, jory talking to jamie, the Thorne monologue, the scene with viserys where they made him seem less of a prick for just a moment (before reminding you).I like the unexpected scenes as there are still some surprises. I thought that it was a slow enough episode but
now that catelyns grabbed tyrion(brillant as always) the bloods gonna come in torrents.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,839 ✭✭✭Jelle1880

Story didn't really progress, but some characters were developed a bit more again.

I still doubt they'll be able to tell the whole book in 1 season.

edit: I must say that it's starting to become obvious that Tim Van Patten only did the first two episodes, those were by far the best so far.

Yeah - definitely the worst episode so far. Ive loved all the other 3 but this one was only ok. Had some great moments, particularly the jousting but some scenes were overlong (the bath scene) and the story didnt progress enough.

God I loved it! ~Much better than episode 3. And the way the lady caught the dwarf was really well directed!

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,839 ✭✭✭Jelle1880

The bath scene was so bad :o
And the jousting was nice, but why did it look like only a hundred or so people showed up ?

I think it was just about the worst episode, but only because the other ones were so good. For me 1 = 3 > 2 >= 4.

But you know, there were some tricky things in the book that I thought they did really well. Like Littlefinger sitting next to Sansa and talking about her, I mean how are they honestly going to do Sansa feeling like Littlefinger was looking at her as if she had no clothes on.... I agree that the bath scene was too long also. I hope they are not going to try to exaggerate the sexiness of it always like this (and if they are, at least give us more of a prominent view....) >_>

You know what also? I thought they overdid the "status" part of things. When Ned is talking to Robert's bastard son, he doesn't have to be so submissive. And Viserys didn't have to be such a bastard to Doreah. I didn't find it very realistic.

I was a bit suspicious at Sam at first, he didn't look fat enough. But still I do think he plays the part well. All of these actors are wayyy past the 14-16 year olds they're meant to be though.

Also, Ned looked kind of lame/dazed and confused talking to GrandMaester Pycell about the book, as if he had just woken up.

Hodor... the book called him a "stable boy" didn't it?... so I thought he would be a bit younger. I used to imagine him a bit like Frankenstein, not light on his feet like this guy. Frankly I dunno what people who haven't read the books are going to make of him. :o And I imagined more of a drawling voice like: "Hoodoorrrrrrr"... people who are slow tend to speak in a different way.

The joust scene I thought was done quite well also, but nothing about it blew me away. I don't think I laughed once this episode also. However I still think it was brilliant, just not as good as the other episodes.

I thought it an allrlight episode - nothing standout in either the positive or negative camp. Plotwise, it seems to be simmering over, and feels like things will soon come to a head. We shall wait and see I guess. I am already wondering how Tyrion will react when he is confronted with "his" knife. I'm wondering if he'll side with the Starks, and conspire against his family.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,618 ✭✭✭Mr Freeze

Really enjoying the show, reading the book too at the moment.

Reading bits of it during the week and never seem to get too far ahead of whats happening in the TV show. Both are great anyways.

No idea whats gonna happen next, can't wait for the TV show, so will be getting stuck into the book later.

I hope so, he already seems to have his suspicions regarding Bran's accident.

Jon Snow is supposed to be 17 in the show, and I believe Samwell said something about his 18th nameday. I'm not sure exactly how "namedays" work, but I'm guessing that means he's 18. Most of the characters have been aged up a bit, so never assume it's meant to be the same as in the book.

Yeah it's been mentioned numerous times that all the children were aged up. George has also explained that he wished he could go back and do the same for the books.

Can't exactly be empathising with 'kiddie fiddlers' like Drogo in this day and age.
