Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Very sad news. Coming so soon after his retirement too.
He will live long in the memory though. Will forever be part of those golden memories of Italia 90 and Giants stadium in 94
    Sympathies to his family.

Wow, a huge part of the life of any Irish sports fan.

I remember the '82 World Cup Finals, when RTE presentation was a good bit more reserved than it is now, he mistakenly called an ad break in the middle of the analysis.

Realising he had got it wrong, he just kinda glinted and said 'that's a pity, we could have done with the money'. Laughter all round.

Ah no, that's terrible. Sound guy and I was just thinking the other day it would be good to have him chairing some of the soccer matches again.

I'm not a sports fan but grew up hearing him on the radio so often. Seemed like a really good man and an instantly identifiable voice and way about him.

    RIP

Ah that's terrible news. It was only last year he signed off on his final broadcast. It's not even been a year. Would have hoped he'd have had a nice few years in retirement. :(

    Very sad indeed.
I've tried to watch the football on RTE but its just not the same wihout him.
    May he rest in peace..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,196 ✭✭✭PressRun

Ah Jaysis. I always used to look forward to watching himself, Eamonn, John Giles and Liam Brady at the World Cup. Bill had a great way of throwing a grenade into the room and then just standing by while the other three went mad. Some of RTE's golden moments involve those four. Sports broadcasting hasn't been the same since he retired.

    A national icon. RIP.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,457 ✭✭✭ford2600

    RIP.

My abiding memory is the innocent way he pulled the pin and rolled the grenade in between Dunphy, Giles, Brady & co and then sat back.

As I lost interest in watching professional soccer I used to tune in to watch the half time analysis and after match chat.

    What a professional

Got to meet him a few times informally over the years at various FG Ardfheiseanna and fundraisers. He was exactly the same in person as he was on the telly. Warm, funny, outgoing, charismatic. A lovely man.

Just listening to the tributes being paid to him on the radio.
He was still very active, with new projects and ventures in the pipeline. As far from retirement as you could get for a man of 76.
Absolute giant within Irish life and not just in the medium of sports presentation.
Missed him from RTEs football presentations the minute he left and miss him all the more today.
Condolences to his wife and family.
As so many have said already on this thread.....We'll leave it there so.

Bill doing his best to get Eamonn Dunphy riled up over Rod Liddle and Roy Keane. Classic. :pac:

Loved when he'd say something with a wry smile waiting for Dunphy to lose it.

Dunphy rarely failed to rise to the occasion.

Show isn't the same without him.

    RIP Bill, ya cheeky sod.
