Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I think you can. I think they put you on the 50Mb package like they did with this guy because you both have similar stats.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=85538820&postcount=22

Sorry do you mean I should be looking for them to up the profile?

    Here are mine.

Think I'd gain much moving to the 70mb profile and should I benefit much from vectoring ?

Yeah, I think they can upgrade you to a higher profile. Best thing to do is ring them and get them to look at your "line attenuation". I said 50Mb profile but I meant higher than 50Mb because you're already getting 50Mb.

    Yours is: 13.7 dB
The guy's in my link is: 12.7 dB

    You get 50Mb
He gets 70Mb and he could get up to 80Mb with vectoring.

I would just ring them if I were you and them that others with similar stats get higher speeds.

I don't think you can make the 70Mb profile currently, but with vectoring you can make 76Mb.

Rang Vodafone about upping my profile but was told that 50 is all the line can handle.

Oops wrong thread. Sorry mister perfect.

You don't have to be perfect to post a midband speedtest on the right forum, you just need half a brain.

Go on to the forum and discuss it with them: http://community.vodafone.ie/

You might just have to wait until vectoring is enabled to get faster speeds.

I'd say the cabinet you're actually connected to is much further than that. Maybe 700-800 metres.

Nah 90% sure I know the one, it's only just down the road. I don't know how it's looped to it though, may go a scenic route to the cabinet!

Eircom being Eircom often times the cabinet that's closest to you isn't the one you're connected to. Maybe someone on here who understand more about this can assist you.

Seems like everyone is using this speed calculator without reading the notes below the calculator itself.

This tool seems a little better from some check I've done. Hierzo.net
Select DSL Tools -> DSL Caculator - Select VDSL 17Mhz

Does this pump out numbers which reflect reality for others?
Of course, the quality of the cabling to the cab will pull the numbers down

The biggest issue is that wiring doesn't always run the way you might expect.

Remember these networks of copper wires between you and the exchange may date back to a time when there were no data services at all. They were mostly planned to provide analogue voice services (POTS) so things like distance to the exchange wasn't a big deal as long as it was less than about 5km and even beyond that they could get it to work well.

ADSL and VDSL are basically 'hacks' that repurposed legacy infrastructure to do something it was never designed to do. That's why there are issues with signal degradation and attenuation.

Most lines will tend to follow the street back to the cabinet that's between you and the exchange. However, you could find for example if your house was built before others in your area that the phone line takes a different route to neighbouring properties and heads to a cabinet that's further away.

I know one person who has a cabinet on the green outside their house but the line actually snakes around the whole housing estate for almost a km then out the main entrance and back to the cabinet...

They're getting very mediocre speed even though the cabinet is visible from their living room.

"I'd say the cabinet you're actually connected to is much further than that. Maybe 700-800 metres." !!!

His sync rate is, Line Rate: 20.549 Mbps 51.280 Mbps and his actual is 47.19, and 19.18 that means he is more like 200m from cabinet. It would be impossible to get those readings at 700-800m.

Sorry if I missed it, but what speeds and pings (to best server) are people ~150m from the cabinet getting?

You're further than 300m from the cabinet. At 300m, you would get about 60Mb with an attainable net data rate of 90Mb or 100Mb.

godskitchen has similar stats and he reckons he's 700m - 800m from the cabinet: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=85091467&postcount=1

Not true, his attenuation is certainly that of a line greater than 200-300m. People are getting 50Mbit upto 500m+

Yeap, you should be getting much more. Your stats are similar to this person's: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=85125082&postcount=3

The person in that link isn't even getting the maximum from his line, but but his "attainable net data rate" would be similar to yours if you had an eircom router.

Just ring them and ask can you be bumped to the 70Mb profile. If that can't be done, ask for the 60Mb profile.

    Here is mine:

    Upstream line rate (kbit/s) 10239

Before VDSL, I had 10mbit down, .5mbit up. As my speeds seem to never deviate, I assume I'm on a fixed stable profile as opposed to an adaptive one.

He has similar downstream line attenuation as you. He gets 50Mb but he can actually get much more, as you can see from his "attainable net data rate".

Ring them and ask them to bump you up to the 70Mb profile.

Not a whole lot to play with in the downstream SNR though. I don't think it would do 50Mbit but no harm seeing I suppose.

Didn't notice that. Maybe that's why he's on the 40Mb profile. The good news is that vectoring should dramatically improve that when it's enabled.

Aye, that's what I was thinking too about my downstream SNR. I'm in two minds whether to ask Vodafone to rise my profile or leave it alone until vectoring comes in. I'd be concerned that moving up a profile could leave me with connection woes?

I'd like higher upload speeds though. Damn greedy I am, considering I only had half a meg mere months ago! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

Not sure if they can do 40/15, that should be ok, but vectoring should be enabled soon. I'd leave it alone a while. Stability is more important than an extra few Mbits at these speeds.

I was told I could get anywhere from 43Mb+ download and I should "expect" to be able to get 20mb upload. I think I'm around 400 metres from the cabinet. I don't have Fibre yet but those this sound right to anyone? Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

You'll get 50/20 at that distance at least. Maybe 70/20 with vectoring.

After further testing, while my modem has sync'd at the higher speed the real world download/upload speeds (From HEAnet's FTP site) are still capped around that when it was syncing at 7/1Mbps.
They prob don't have enough capacity in my cab, or the distance is still a factor? Confused anywho

I was told I could get anywhere from 43Mb+ download and I should "expect" to be able to get 20mb upload. I think I'm around 400 metres from the cabinet. I don't have Fibre yet but those this sound right to anyone? Thanks.

I'm about the same. Getting 50/20

    That's not how it works.

You either have vdsl or you don't. The number of lines into a cab is of no concern as long as you are one of them.

How are you testing the speed? Wired connection?

@kerbdog - your current SNR at the higher profile speeds are barely adequate. You may be getting lots of packets being re-transmitted due to errors and thus you are not getting much improved throughput. At the distance you are from the cabinet you might be better on a lower speed profile until such time as vectoring is turned on. Your previous good SNR values were a reflection of the low profile you were on and not vectoring - certainly not three months ago.

On phone with them now to try a lower profile. Gone to 25Mbps down and still kinda the same

How will I know vectoring is enabled?

Well I would imagine if vectoring is enabled your SNR values will increase in comparison to their value on the same profile. If eircom are switching profiles for you on request (you must have a good contact there!) then you will notice your SNR changing. It's difficult for you to know if vectoring is enabled unless you have a before and after comparison on a particular profile or if eircom tell you it's enabled!
Three or four weeks ago I had a temporary improvement in SNR but it went back to its original value after a day or so. I reckon they were testing, but it has not been switched on since. I log in to the modem every day to check, but really I'm more than happy with my 66Mb down and 17Mb up!

Cool, will keep an eye on it so. Now on the 25Mbps down and its the same. Looks like the errors keep racking up

That's some increase - how do you get moved onto the 100Mb profile?

Don't know. But it is still just the 50Mb service.

    He's not

Line rate is the real profile.
Actual is what he's actually getting.
    Attainable is theoretically available

Appreciate that - how or when does he get moved onto 100Mb? Will the operator do that automatically?

Re-profiled, after evision discontinued, to 70/20. I'm 190m from the cabinet. SNR is poor but adequate and should improve with vectoring to allow 100/20. Line attenuation has dropped by 50% on TX/RX. Connection has been stable with no drop-outs for several days.

I've a similar SNR and it's not dropped out once. I think once it stays above 6 it's ok.

Hi all, just recently got eFibre installed (70Mb/Unlimited package). I'm ~650m from the cabinet, the router stats show a 30Mb link and speedtest results are in the ~25Mb ballpark.

Fairly ok with that, wasn't really expecting to get the top rate due to distance from the cabinet but just wondering from these stats if I'm on a lower profile than I could be on. Probably more interested in a stable link and unlimited usage rather than outright data rates but fasters always better if you can get it right? :)

As far as I know vectoring hasn't been rolled out where I am yet so might I be best holding off for that first to see where it gets me?

Your attenuation puts you much further than 650m... if vectoring improves your SNR another bit then yes you will no problem go close to 50Mbit. Hold tough a few weeks more.
