Why the need to play at loud volume ??

I am talking here about your small average pub venue as against a major concert venue like the "O2". I have long since taken to bringing ear plugs to gigs, to try to hold on to what little hearing I have left. The reason as to why it is necessary to play so loud has always puzzled me.
