Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I agree. Strawberry ice cream is win. Haagen Dazs anyone?

Right, my brain is absolutely incapable of straight thought for the moment so a little help would be appreciated from all the geniuses/genii/whatever here -

Peptide bonds. They're between what atoms again? I'm drawing peptides from amino acids but can't rememeber the damn atoms they're supposed to be between.

Valine. Preferred conformation of the side chain? Are they on about beta sheets/alpha helixs etc. here or something else entirely?

    Is that the right answer?
I'm assuming not because you surely googled before asking.

Peptide bonds are between the alpha-amino group of one amino acid and the alpha-carboxyl group of another, so AFAIK it's usually a C-N bond.

All I know on Valine (I say know, I'm actually looking at my Instant Notes Biochemistry Revision book) is that its side chain is aliphatic and hydrophobic, but chemically unreactive... not sure if that answers that question.

It's kinda the answer. I wasn't sure whether it was C-N or O-N specifically.

Thanks. It is a C-N bond, managed to find it eventually in amongst my lecturer's scrawl.
As regards valine, I have no idea. I don't even know what they're asking. Tutorial work can be so... ugh.

    :D Love that joke!

e^x is walking down a dark alley when a differential operator jumps out and says "I'm gonna differentiate you until you've disappeared, motherfucker"
e^x just sneers and says "Fuck you, bitch! I'm e^x. How could you possibly hurt me?"
The operator replies "I differentiate with respect to y"

Who said mathematics can't be "street" or "ghetto"? :pac:

    Computer related question -

Got my laptop about a year and a half ago. Used Internet Explorer as my web browser up until Octoberish last year when it became extraordinarily slow and keep closing for no reason with messages like Runtime Error! etc. popping up. I started using Firefox which was amazingly fast while Internet Explorer remained as slow and stubborn as a donkey. All was well until the last few weeks where I've noticed Firefox is getting slower and is starting to do the inconvient shutdown thing. Google Chrome on the other hand is working fantastically (just like Internet Explorer and Firefox were originally).

Soooo... anyone know what the hell am I doing wrong? How can I fix the problem? I'm going to run out of web browsers that work properly at this rate :/

Chrome, also delete your history and stuff when it starts to get slow and see if it helps, Ctrl-Shift-Delete in Firefox, it's in the options in Chrome but not sure if there's a keyboard shortcut, have to manually clear out your pr0n.

I happen to like Firefox. However, I'm envisaging a permanent move to Chrome, where it's nice and fast and doesn't run break down frequently and there's plenty of room for porn...

Question about Chrome though, where's the File/Edit/View/History/Bookmarks/Tools options that are normally above where you type in the webiste address? Might be a stupid question but I can't seem to find them.

That's what I prefer about Chrome though. It took a while to get used to it, but I love all the small little things it does, especially the way the address bar is the search bar as well, and if you type in one letter, your favourite website comes up automatically.

This, basically I think what they're going for is getting people to use keyboard shortcuts and giving more space to the actual web page and less to toolbars. I know at one point there was a little "How-To" on the homepage that changed every time, starting with more basic stuff and moving up.

I don't got no Chrome on my laptop. Am too hip for that. I'm as hip and happening as something that is also hip and happening.

In other news I'm looking at this assignment here and I may have become stumped by the simplicity of its wording. I really am not sure what exactly I'm supposed to be doing. Naturally I cannot ask for directions help on account that I have a penis.

    Is that less insulting?

No. I have asked for help twice in this thread and have not grown any extra yet mostly useless apendages. Yet. I am living proof that posting a question in the genius thread is, quite simply, genius. Plus I really want to be able to help someone with something, ANYTHING at all, so that I can prove I really am a closet genius. Yes.

    So post! :D

Also, I was just thinking that you sound ridicously like someone I know. Called David. However, he is not in UCD so I know you're not the same person. But still, it's a bit weird.

    Fair enough.
Given an integer n > 1, find distinct positive integers x and y with
    1/x + 1/y = 1/n

It seems so very simple yet I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for here hence I'm not sure what my strategy is supposed to be. I'm not sure if I'm trying to express x and y in some algebraic term, trying to find some sort of solution set or trying to simply find a single example.

I probably shouldn't have dozed off a bit in the lecture.

What's weird is that this wouldn't be the first time I've heard that. I have been told that I reminded somebody of another David on at least three separate occasions. I'm beginning to think that I may be a stock character.

I've also had occassions where people said they saw somebody walking around that was basically me at 30. I am secretly hoping I discover time travel at this stage.

My severe out-of-practiceness with Maths leaves me at a bit of a disadvantage here but I'm thinking. Which has to count for something right? ;) On first glance, x and y can be many numbers so I don't think they're looking for a single example anyway.

I'd say all Davids are clones of each other. Y'all come out with similiar stuff and grow up to look the same. Only explanation really.

I've had a few drinks and I'm not confident that I'm even close...

    But would 1/(n*3/2) + 1/(n*3) = 1/n?
    Multiply both sides by 3n and you get 2 + 1 = 3.
    Likewise 1/(n*6/5) + 1/(n*6) = 1/n since multiplying by n*6 gives 5+1=6
    1/(4*n/3) + 1/(4*n) = 1/n.

    Maybe like Y = N by a constant P; X is Y divided by P - 1?

This won't give ALL the answer (I think), but it will (assuming I'm not wrong) give an infinite number of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,893 ✭✭✭Davidius

Don't need a solution so much as I need the question. The solution's something I figure I can work on my own. Which reminds me that I completely abandoned what I was doing, oh shít.

I figure it's looking for 'distinct' solutions in the same way you find distinct solutions in linear congruences so I figure that'd be somewhere around the right idea. Not sure 3n/2 working considering x, y are integers hence n would need to be divisible by 2.

Well yes, my answer was really "All integers that satisfy the following" rather than "all numbers that satisfy the following".

I'm forgetting that you're doing maths though, so you can't just throw in an "if (n % p == 0)" and a loop to run until you find enough answers :P

Right, so Maths question for you.

You have a number N and a number P, you can add, subtract, multiply or divide.
Is there an equation in N and P which will result in 0 if they're NOT equal, and any other integer (preferably a one for simplicity's sake) if they ARE equal (the other way around can be done with simple subtraction).
You can introduce any constants you want and store any number of variables, but keeping it to a minimum would be good.
Oh and you can't make any comparisons.
