Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

...don't rise to the the bait folks! Suggest leaving them to wallow in their own ignorance :P......

...bringing this discussion back on a more sensible track.....

Sean - you reccommedned IRB for their EGR removal kit and I've seen v good write ups on other forums - I've been trying to get hold of Ian to procure a kit - no joy - called a few times, left messages, texted him

    Is he still in business?

  • Registered Users Posts: 395 ✭✭dantastic

I've been thinking about one one those egr removal kits myself.

Do you have to tell your insurance company about that? Is it considered a performance upgrade, or? Are they likely not to like it come renewal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

IRB are definitely in business but haven't seen him post lately (as Porny)

EGR removal kits are available from many suppliers, mine is Devon 4x4 (they are near my sisters place) but Paddocks list one now without the fancy laser cutting ;) The basics are a blanking plate for the exhaust manifold and a straight pipe to replace the EGR valve, better kits include all the blanking plugs for the vacuum pipes to the modulator(s).

With all mods you should really inform your insurance company, I'm probably going to confess to my recent mods in one go at renewal time. My insurance company in the UK before I moved had no problems and no charge, suspect they'll look at it as a money making opportunity here (I'm with AXA now as a passenger vehicle)

  • Registered Users Posts: 75 ✭✭roman0red

Thanks - I was specifically looking for the IRB kit as it had the blanking plugs. I'll keep looking ....

On another note - any ideas where I'd get a Oil transfer hand pump - I'm about to change the oil in the gearbox and am trying to figure out a convienent way of getting the oil into the fill hole. I've seen pics of these hand pumps but haven't had any luck finding one on the net.

PS -Using the difflock Evo1 oil - expensive but I hear its good!

    Cheers!

You can get what look like big syringes but I use cheap B&Q garden sprayers, have one for each oil. Just bin the spray head and pump it up, will even pump cold EP90 no problem.

The Evo 1 is good stuff if a little pricey, have it in my new a Ashcroft main box.

Looks handy enough for topping up. Wouldn't be big enough for me, 101 gear box and transfer box alone hold around 6 litres of 20W/50!

The main headlamps are a lucas replacement kit to replace the crappy sealed beam units that came with it. It failed the DOE because they were so dim :D

The auxillary lights are about 8 years old - 7 inch hella auxillary units with H3 55w bulbs, the outer two wired to the high beam and the inner to the fog lights.

The bottom two are wipac spots also running H3 bulbs :) wired in with a seperate circut to the other lights

Its about the brightest thing on the road at night though you have to be careful of other road users as it might stun them :P

That the same engine they fit in the DAF 45 trucks!

I'd be interested in how he managed to sort out the transmission with that set up. Think they are about 130bhp but would have immense torque compared to the standard engine. A dodgy harvey spicer wouldn't last long!

I replaced my old sealed beams with these:
    http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/DEFENDER/Accessories/Wipac_Crystal_Halogen_Headlamp_Conversion_Kit_%28pair%29_-_left_hand_dip_%28UK_and_Australia%29.html

...with these stuffed in the holes:
    http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/H4-Osram-Night-Breaker-12v-60-55w-90-pair.html

They're nothing short of astounding, especially so when compared to what the lights used to be like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

Thats the headlamps I have fitted to mine, makes a fair difference. Have a full set of NAS side, indicator and tail lights which tidies up the appearance as well, especially at the back.

I know someone fitting a Cummins out of a DAF45, looking into keeping the gearbox that came with it and fitting the LT230 Tbox via an adaptor plate. They were running a GMC V8 which turned out to be only marginally more reliable than the gearboxes it ate! Sounded nice though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 206 ✭✭Snake_Doctor

My 110 has a GM 6.2 V8 as well, but its off the road at the moment due to the chassis and body falling apart! The GM is realible enough for me, but I was only using it for Sunday driving.
101Sean, I'd love to come and see that cummins conversion, this is what I have in the head for the next Project as well, although I'm thinking of a suitable Auto box as they seem to soak the torque better.

Ken, who is doing it, started this thread on LRA, well worth a read. I'm sure he wouldn't mind you sending him a pm from there. http://www.landroveraddict.com/smf/index.php?topic=381570.140

He's doing it 'cos he can :D Also has an immaculate Series 1 fire engine, an american truck (can't remember whether it's a Pete or a KW) and several tractors.

is there such thing as a defender 130 from the new shape bodies (2008 onwards) or is it just a 110 crewcab?

    There sure is:
    http://www.landrover.com/gb/en/lr/defender/explore/double-cab-high-capacity-pick-up/

The current 130 appears to be only available as a chassis cab, a double cab chassis cab, and a double cab:

with regards to off road driving would you say the mercedes unimog would outperform a defender 130, comparing the weight of the two etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 511 ✭✭✭PanhardPL

A Unimog is a totally different 4 x 4 to a Land Rover Defender 130 and for that matter to any other 4 x 4.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

Yep, totally different animals, don't try and follow in the wheel ruts of a Unimog, any normal 4x4 will ground out! They have portal axles, diff locks front and rear and bigger tyres for a start.

Yes, no comparing the two but you can'nt compare the price of them either.

    hi

a friend of mine is selling a landrover county -its 1985 and is fully redone inc new chassis, 5 sp gearbox and a 200 2.5l engine etc...
    lovely order, tested etc,

whats would this be worth in todays market and would it be a sought after machine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,379 ✭✭✭O.A.P

Impossible to answer that, post some pics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

It would be very sellable, as to value it's hard to say. There's a demand for good pre Td5 Land Rovers, some people are unescessarily wary of electrikery.

If it's been well done it could be worth as much as a vehicle 10 years newer. Has the new chassis been stamped with the original Vin no? Is it registered as a commercial or private?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,396 ✭✭✭kincaid

    its a private vehicle,its a NI vehicle..
its got the 200 series engine -suppose to be better than the 300 they say..

does the chassis need to be stamped?

must get some pictures of it next week

im not sure what a 1995 is making but he;s looking €3600 for it,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

Sounds reasonable. Should really stamp the chassis number but don't think it's so much of a problem in the north. Down here the vehicle's identity belongs to the chassis, could cause problems at NCT/DOE time and the revenue may consider it a new vehicle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,396 ✭✭✭kincaid

    chassis not stamped...

what is the procedure/cost of stamping the chassis

what the vrt on such a vehicle,,

he says on the revenue website it only goes back to 1990...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

The VRT will be I think 33% of the OMSP and the road tax will be €948pa as a passenger vehicle.

You can buy a set of stamps online or from a places that stock Draper tools and do it yourself, it's stamped on the RH front of the chassis just behind the lower bumper mount in what looks to be about 6mm digits. Just make sure it matches exactly the what's on the VIN plate on top of the brake pedal box and V5.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,396 ✭✭✭kincaid

is it not something like €50 vrt seeing thats its 25 years old

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

No, has to be over 30 years old for that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 206 ✭✭Snake_Doctor

    thanks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭Slidey

No worries, it came across as otherwise to me. Carry on so. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

It's a very early 90 (what's left of it!), would have had the V8 petrol (awesome engine apart from drinking habit) and an LT85 gearbox. The gearbox would have been changed with the 200tdi as the original won't fit. At 70k the engine is barely run in. I assume during the rebuild any rust issues with the bulkhead will have been done, if it's done properly it should be a good one.

The chassis number will always show it as being a V8, not a problem as long as it's been changed on the V5, chassis change is the only issue you may have here. Sounds a good buy but don't know whether you should consult your local VRO first (and hope you get someone who knows their stuff ) or take a chance on it and see what happens when you register it.

I've a 300TDI 110, Wonderin if anyone has fitted a second alternator ( where Aircon pump would sit) or an air compressor to to use with on board tank?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

If you look at the tech forums on any of the UK LR forums, you'll find plenty of posts on fitting second alternators, there's places that will supply the brackets as well.

Couple of ways of doing on board air. Expensive ish is something like Viair from Matt Savage who supply everything or DIY using a good 12V twin compressor (like a Tmax) permanantly mounted and a small tank from a workshop or small lorry airtank. Another common way is to use the aircon compressor to supply the tank. Again, loads of examples on tech forums.

Cheers guys, that bracket would do just nicely! & a 12V compressor for the tank would be easier to rig up than a belt driven one I think.

Awesome, nothing like the roar of a V8, takes some beating.

I frequently feel the need to plant the boot firmly to the floor in the 101 just to listen to it (preferably in a busy town centre :D) Beats a diesel clatter any day, shame it's such damned expensive experience
