Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Israel has announced its intent today to build a further 3,000 settlements in East Jerusalem
As the United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to upgrade the Palestinians’ status Thursday night, Israel took steps toward building housing in a controversial area of East Jerusalem known as E1, where Jewish settlements have long been seen as the death knell for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

A senior Israeli official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said on Friday that the decision was made late Thursday night to move forward on “preliminary zoning and planning preparations” for housing units in E1, which would connect the large settlement of Maale Adumim to Jerusalem and therefore make it impossible to connect the Palestinian cities of Ramallah and Bethlehem to Palestinian neighborhoods of East Jerusalem. Israel also authorized the construction of 3,000 housing units in other parts of East Jerusalem and the West Bank, the official said.

Obviously they consider building settlements the main way in which to grab more land. Of course, the foundation of Israel often consisted of defending isolated settlements which the Arabs attempted to obliterate.

Today there is no legitimate reason for the Israelis to build settlements in land that isn't theirs, and in fact, this policy invites attacks on these Israeli settlers. Far from the defensive measures taken in the foundation of Israeli, the Israeli response today will be the extension of the Wall and security cordon as a justified means to protect such civilians. Then new settlements are built beyond the security cordon and the cycle continues.

I didn't see anybody clapping when all Israeli settlements were removed by the government from the Gaza Strip though. Nor has it stopped rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip on the rest of Israel.

European countries such as UK, France, Sweden, Denmark and Spain summon their ambassadors for explanations regarding this new settlement expansion.
Why isn't Ireland doing the same?

Given the fact we have the EU presidency next month, I think it's important that we voice our grave concerns regarding this development.

Is there anything to be said for building a few polders?
