I was going to use passport express today to renew my passport and get one for my son but when i was in the garda station getting my photos stamped the guard behind the counter said she'd just heard on the radio (96fm Cork) that passport express had been suspended and that the passport office in Cork were sending out passports from April 14th. Had originally intended to use passport express but decided to pop down to the passport office on the south mall to check it out. They had an extra desk set up for enquiries and applications which was manned by 2 staff members, both of them really nice. Anyone who was travelling before April 14th had to take a ticket and wait with their applications ( one woman was told by security guard that the average wait was 40 mins). Anyone travelling after that date had their forms checked by the two on the extra desk and recieved a receipt with the application numbers and was told that all the applications taken at that desk will be posted on April 14th. I checked the tracking numbers on passport.ie this evening for the laugh and lo and behold they're already up so fingers crossed.....

Im growing increasingly frantic at this point! I applied for my pasport through the express service on the 4th of march! Ive been checking the tracking site ever since, only to see 'Passport being checked, last updated on the 12th of march'' , However, when i luckily got through to them on monday after 1 frickin hour on the phone, the woman told me that the passport application has not been touched! Absolutely ridiculous! I'm due to fly out on the 10th of april, and im worried i may not recieve it by then. Has anybody has any good experience at all??:confused::confused:
go in to them with proof of your flights and you will be bumped up, im flying out on the 7th and was frantic until they said they are going to get passports for people with flights first, heres hopeing. all the best hope you get it

Used the mail function on the website re: getting my old passport back and got a response at 8.23pm my faith in the public service has been restored!

On a side note a rep from Ryanair said there was no way that they will relax the passport to Uk rule!

No worries. An EU passport is valid for travel within the EU up to it's expiry date.

Hi Mike, would you have a link for this information, I fly to Lanzarote from 21st - 28th April, passport expires 5th May, I just want to make sure it will be valid,

    Thanks

All EU citizens have the right to enter and reside in the territory of any other member state of the European Union for a period of up to three months simply by presenting a valid passport or national identity card; no other formality is required. Member states cannot set additional conditions concerning the minimum validity of duration of the identity card or passport

A few of the previous posters had stated that you don't need a passport to fly to the UK, I remember reading somewhere, either late last year or earlier this year that it was changing, does anyone have a date on that?

I and my partner are going to the UK via boat in Mid May, we will be applying for new passports later this week via An Post (the existing ones expire on 1st May), as she does not have a driving licience is there any danager of not being allowed to travel if the passports don't arrive?

    No that's on ice - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8150930.stm

You won't needa passport for the UK as there's a separate arrivals area. Thing is though, Dublin airport can be a bit of bother. Driver's licence has your birth place and pre-2005 all people born here become citizens so that's accepted in Dublin Airport by the NIM Garda. Maybe your wife has some work ID or something official at the least? That and a birth cert should work. Thing is though the NIM Garda probably wouldn't give this info out officially!

Holyhead passport was a walkthrough last time I was there. I travelled to Dublin via Stranraer/Belfast ferry last year. I was asked for ID at Stranraer as I was a young male on my own and it was a match weekend Rangers v Celtic etc. Had no passport but gave the police there my age card and he took down my details, asked me to sign a form to say where I was staying and then that was that.

Thanks for that, what qualifies as a form of Identity, she doesn't have a driving licience and getting the theory test and the provisional licience isn't going to happen in time?

An update issued today to help things along
The union said it was prepared to extend the grounds for emergency passport provision beyond bereavement and illness to include immediate travel deadlines.

Im due to fly to the uk on april 8th, My passport is out of date on april 1st, Im flying with the dreaded ryanair..and was wondering do I need a passport seen as its between the uk and ireland? On their website is says:
A valid National Identity Card issued by the government of a European Economic Area (EEA) country is acceptable.

Does this mean an garda age card is acceptable?

No. Some EU countries have ID card schemes. We don't - as such a valid passport is the only ID Ryanair will accept from you.

If I was you, I'd get cracking on it now/soon. You might qualify under the relaxation of the strike, as they are now saying that "imminent travel" is now a valid reason for an emergency passport.

A friend of mine is flying to Turkey this Saturday. She has 4 months left on her Irish passport. I have been told by the Turkish embassy that she needs 6 months. I know this is probably a lost cause, but does anybody have any experience of exceptions being made or should she just arrive and chance it (as she was told to do by a different person at the embassy a couple of days ago).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Managed to get speaking to somebody in last 10 mins. Basically, if it hasn't been touched yet then yes I can withdraw the application. It remains to be seen if they will photocopy it for me & proceed with the application like normal on foot of the new T&C's I posted above

I'm currently waiting inside passport office off Kildare street on my old in date passport back from balbriggin. At moment I've been told I should get it by lunch. Fingers crossed

Yeah, turns out where I'm going requires 3 months validity remaining on a passport.

I'm eligible for an American passport also, and am considering applying for one at the same time as my Irish one, just in case...

Best to check that you are allowed to hold 2 passports in the UK duel nationality is allowed but you are only allowed to hold 1 valid passport I think it might be the same here.

Only other option would be to hop the ferry over to the Uk & queue at the passport section of the Irish Embassy it might be quicker.

In Ireland and in the USA, if you have dual nationality you are allowed to hold a valid passport from each country. It must be the same in the UK also, or do you have a source which states otherwise.

Why do so many leave it to the last minute to apply for a passport or to renew an existing one?

There is a special service where express passports will be produced within 2 weeks if the application is sent VIA a TDs office. It does not have to be an FF TD.

    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/tanaiste-denies-abusing-power-by-fasttracking-499-passports-1749782.html
Under the system, TDs and senators can leave passport applications given to them by members of the public in a drop box in Leinster House.

These applications are processed by a special unit at the passport office and the passport is issued within five days -- half the time a regular application would take.

Some 4,383 applications were dealt with in this way between January 2008 and the end of last month, according to documents released under the Freedom on Information Act.

    Hey,

The missus applied for her new passport with the 10 day passport 'express' on March 8th. The lady in the post office said it could take up to 15 working days. Been in twice to Molseworth St so far and no joy.

Flying tomorrow at 3pm, so going to dust of the Thermos flask and prep some hang sandwiches for a 6am start in the queue at the passport office.

Have flight details, photos, application form etc. If anyone has any positive tips/suggestions on what we can do to improve our odds of getting the passport on the day i would like to hear them.

Failing that, is there anything good on in Dublin this weekend

    Go Team!

Approved means that everything is ok with your application (photo's, citizenship etc), next stop is production (ie: where it's made) then quality control and then postage.

It depends on which office it is in as to how quickly it will be sent out, reason being, the office in Molesworth St recently flooded and some of the printers were damaged, this has to cause a delay in production.

Thanks for that. Well, it was saying approved in Friday and them yesterday status changed back to blank on the website, and no sign of it in the post so far.

Questions for anyone in those long queues.
I will hopefully be collecting my passport from molesworth street in the next couple of days - tracking it online says that it’s currently been "approved".

When I applied at the counter I asked for collection as opposed to the passport being posted to me.

Are those long queues for people going to the counters on the bottom floor or are they people queuing to collect their passports upstairs?

Bloody Hell.. That was an epic wait. Was the queue busy from 4am on?

I am travelling to Portugal on 8th of April. No passport. I handed in my application with my out of date passport to Molesworth St on 18th March and got a slip telling me collection date of 30th March. I assume this is no longer even slightly realis&tic.

It's looking like I will have to start queueing tomorrow morning at 3 or 4am. Does anyone know will this help my cause. Obviously I will have all proof of travel with me.

My other option is to go to British Embassy tomorrow morning and try get a British Passport. I was born in England as was my Father. (Both of us hold Irish Passports). I have never held one before.
Does anyone know if this is a possibility. Bear in mind my out of date Irish Passport is with Irish Passport Office as part of my renewal application. I have an original copy of my Birth Cert.

Pretty much at a loss like so many other people.

Do I queue at 4am at Irish Office?
Do I chance trying to get a British Passport?

All opinions and any advice appreciated.

    Thanks.

    *Disclaimer*
I accept I should have rewnewed my passport in time so I am entirely to blame for my current predicament.

    W123-80's;

I arrived this morning at 4.15am or so. I counted that I was #41 in the queue. By 8am the queue was backed up to the junction of Kildare Street. I couldn't see any further, but it must have gone around the corner by 9.30am. The people 10-15 places ahead of me said some people arrived at 2am.

I went to the customer services downstairs, where we queued again. I was now #18. I reached the booth at 10.30am and the lady (Ann?) couldn't have been more helpful. I explained my story (renewal applied for with original in date passport sent away too). She rang the Balbriggan office and managed to get my passport pulled out of the system and onto the delivery lorry that was scheduled to head into the city at 11am.

I had details of my flights with me but wasn't asked to produce them. Probably because I was trying to get my old passport back

I then went up stairs and waited. Turned out the delivery from Balbriggan didn't arrive to 12.20pm or so. I got mine and headed home. I can now go to Portugal next week on old (in date) passport and my new renewal will follow when ready.

My only gripes is that the post office probably should have informed me that a photocopy of my passport would have been sufficient when i applied via the express service. This amendment was introduced before I made my application.

Also, the security guard at the main door is extremely rude and all communication with him is best kept to a minimum. Otherwise everybody was more than helpful.

A very long day but worth it

Oh, if queuing bring warm waterproof clothing and something hot to drink.

    I'm flying Thursday 8th April.
I'm not sure if camping out will achieve anything to be honest. That was half the reason I posted in the first place, to see if anyone in a similiar situation had been sucessful.
I guess I am a bit like the public in general, I am absolutely petrified that I'll not get a passport in time. I don't want to leave anything to chance.

There isn't any problem with holding both a UK and Irish passport. I seem to remember something about the ones done via the embassy here as just being sent to be processed in the UK anyway but I had my new one back in just over a week when I got mine renewed a month ago, I did that all via the UK though.

They won't care about your Irish passport, so just take along whatever proof it is that they will have listed on the website and you should be good to go. It might be that it will take a touch longer though if you've not had one before and neither has your dad.

One on behalf of my fiance:

We're getting married soon, and honeymooning in Vancouver, doing an Alaskan cruise as far north as Anchorage, then back to Vancouver where we drive through the Rockies to Calgary.

My fiance's passport expires 3 weeks exactly after we are due to return.

She applied for a new passport, but the woman in An Post told her not to include her passport that is due to expire.

So, I've heard the US is ok for travel up to the day before you are due to return, but what about Canada?

Do you think we are ok to travel?

    Thanks:)

The gentleman who came out to us, his name was Mr Nugent*, said that we would be no faster at the Passport Office than we would be if we went thru PP direct. Nobody believed him. And they were right, it seems.

    *Head of the PP Office.

My daughter's passport runs out in May, and we're going on holiday in July. I discovered she is entitled to a British Passport because my husband was born in the UK. I don't want to chance sending off for an Irish Passport because things seem to be going from bad to worse at the Passport Office.

We need to get the application countersigned by a British Citizen who is a professional and has known us for 2 years - and lived in the UK for the past 2 years. Trouble is, I don't know any! If I live in Eire, how am I supposed to get somebody who lives abroad to sign the form - and how could they know us for 2 years if we live in different countries! The local Garda was unsure whether or not he could countersign it. I'm just wondering if anybody has applied for a British passport here recently - and if they got an Irish professional to countersign it?

    Hi,

Just thought I'd say that I got my passport in the post today after ordering it via the express service on the 3rd. I was checking this site to try to get an idea as to my chances of receiving it so hopefully this will give some people an idea ofwhen to expect theirs.

Cheers for the update, that's about 20 days or so, helps us gauge how long we will be waiting, do you know what your status was online with the tracker on their website up to the time you got it sent out?

He he...Was that "Robbie" and his wife? They were there when I was queuing..that guy was joke-a-minute......he was cracking one liners, telling people to "spread out in a bunch" and that they "usually always do this"....

Didn't catch his name but he had a brilliant impression of PJ Gallagher's characters. He's was on the RTE news after giving a comment about the commercial vrs private travel relaxations

    Thanks Robinph,

I'm gonna try them in the morning, they can only say no I guess.

There is a special service where express passports will be produced within 2 weeks if the application is sent VIA a TDs office. It does not have to be an FF TD.

I understand that this service is not working at the moment because of the industrial action.

Im due to fly to the uk on april 8th, My passport is out of date on april 1st, Im flying with the dreaded ryanair..and was wondering do I need a passport seen as its between the uk and ireland? On their website is says:

Does this mean an garda age card is acceptable?

With Aer Lingus you could use a Garda Age Card. No immigration controls when you land in Britian. there is in Dublin however and the Immigration Garda demand passport or driver's licence to acertain you're either Irish or British and can avail of the common travel area.

We should really REALLY be getting together and sorting out some kind of ID card with yr picture, DoB and nationality so people can travel around the EU without this passport malarky. So frustrating seing other Europeans stroll through with just showing whatever little card-sized ID they do be showing the Gards in Dublin airport.

Thanks for the update. Did you call them stating you have immediate travel plans or something?? I applied on the 4th, and still nothing. Due to travel to portugal on the 10th. Ive callled them so many times, and they promised to do something about my passport, but my status has been on 'being checked' since the 5th of march. maybe i should now turn up there myself???
