Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm more into the Tandoori Stuff - Do any of the Indian takeaways in town have a tandoori oven and produce edible tandoori cuisine ? The last time I ordered one in town it was dire.....

Had Bethlehem for the first time there in a good while last night. Thought it was really good.

They have an offer for €10 for a 16" pizza, chips and two sauces, I dont know if just suits what me and the OH would normally order but this is serious value. They allowed me to do half one pizza and half another (one half Hot& Spicy and one half Bethlehem special). So comfortably feeding two people with some pizza left over for €5 each

I tried the hungry monk beside Super Value in Monksland there last week and thought it was really decent, nicest Chinese I've had from Athlone in a good while. Their menu is a little confusing but it was very nice

The Hungry Monk ? - That's a very strange name for a Chinese restaurant.......

Certainly is. Paulo Nuttini commented on it after he visited Athlone for a takeaway.

Remember the good old days when a battered sausage from the genoa was heaven.

The silver oak on church street has a decent tandoori menu and since it opened a year ago it's easily the best Indian in town. They have a restaurant in Mullingar for years

Thanks - I'll give it a try next time I'm back in d'town. .

I'll order a tandoori mixed grill and see if it's edible. ;)

Chinese - Row Inn Row in the Bawn (or Lotus opposite the Garda station if it's after pints over that side of town). Has Imperial on Northgate St. folded? It looked closed the last two times I was in Athlone.

Indian - Mother India (just don't order the Madras without putting a toilet roll in the freezer first). I haven't tried that Silver Oak place yet, but have been a fan of Mother India for several years.

Kebab - the kebab shop a few doors past Alfredo's heading out of town. The one on Pearse St. is similar, but the guys there are seriously scabby with the chilli sauce unless you remember to ask for extra.

Chips - Mario's, Savio's, Alfredo's or Bethlehem (their pizza used to be decent too, although I haven't eaten from there in at least a few years)

    Thai - Kin Khao (yum!)

I don't really know of any great pizza places that deliver - any recommendations (anything other than Apache - bleurrrrghhh!)?

Why the **** dont we have a nice Japanese place. My god we need one here badly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,756 ✭✭✭demanufactured

    No demand for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73 ✭✭EmeraldDragon

Only way to see if theres a demand is to open one up or at the very least ask. I certainly never saw a questionaire asking if we would like one or not did you? The "no demand" argument cant be used in situations where something has never been attempted or really properly discussed.

I think its time you put out a questionnaire

Ok then lets start here and make it simple:

1.) Would you be interested in a Japanese restaurant or take away?

2.) What do you know about Japanese cuisine?

3.) Do you like copious amounts of Sake?

    1) I'd try it and decide then
    2) Very little. But I know a lady born and reared not too far from Athlone who has books out on Japanese cooking and food. So I could quiz her more. She also says there's no interest in Japanese food much in Ireland, apart from some niche bits and pieces in bigger urban areas
    3) Can't say I do
