Found a great preview of this, coming out 9th September.

looks like it could be quite like Dead Rising in many ways, the focus on combat without guns, big focus on Xp and leveling up etc.

also looks very like LOST with zombies, a good thing!

Looking forward to this alot. Most likely gonna pick it up. Gonna watch gametrailers.com review first. Yeah it does remind me of Lost but with Zombies, specially that music in the teaser cinematic

Visually it looks great and the gameplay seems nice but the voice overs are horrible and annoying. Ill still pick it up though

    +1

Some truly horrific dialog in the previews as well as the stupid fatality phrases your character says constantly and seem to repeat frequently. Hopefully, that part is just a thing with the Beta that's been shown so far.

Agreed, from that vid alone, I def won't be picking the asian chick with her clip clopping high heels and 'I set you free' fatality sayings. Completely takes away from the game. Hopefully there will be at least one character with half decent dialogue.

Looking forward to the Fallout type quests tho.

Think I just found who I will be picking - Sam B the rapper. This is an excellent trailer, really getting me excited for the game

Right, so basically after all the buzz generated from that effecting, dramatic, heartbreaking CGI trailer, it turns out the actual game itself is nothing like the original preview suggested. I'm fairly sure should qualify as some kind of false advertising! If anything, the final product looks like an expanded version of the Zombie mode from CoD. Even down to the slightly obnoxious interface & achievements. Pass I think; I'll stick with watching Project Zomboid for a proper zombie-survival game. This just looks like a braindead (hoho) splat-a-thon.

Cmon now, thats a bit much. Ya, I highly doubt they can capture the emotion of the original trailer but I hear you get to see the family from that trailer at some point in the game :)

I'll be picking it up anyway, i'm a sucker for anything Zombie....except COD zombies, that was just shiit.

wonder how come they're not showing what the final character look like or any info about him/her

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,514 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Notorioux, do you mean the playable characters? The official site has the character details for all but one of the playable characters

Q&A with Peter Brolly from Publisher Deep Silver. Funny how he says he would like the game to be set in Ireland and call it Dead Ireland :D

I'm talking more tone than anything else. The original CGI trailer suggested this was going to be a little more ... serious(?) than just your typical killgasm zombie game. Something with a bit of humanity in it perhaps, playing up the isolation, fear & paranoia. Ok, I was reading a LOT into a single trailer, but that was the tone I got. Instead the game looks like a FPS Dead Rising, with the splashy interface, achievements & flying XP numbers that makes it look a bit cheap & grindhouse'y. So yeah - CoD Zombies seems an apt comparison; hell they even got the cheesy one-liners after offing a zombie ffs.

I read somewhere the last character is a woman named Purna. She is a firearms specialist and a medic to boot.

Cheers for the info YouSavedMyLife found a pic of her

Quests and RPG elements makes this a lot more appealing to me now, i previously thought it was just gonna be like L4D2.

Well anyone who bases their opinions of a game on a cinematic video is just setting themselves up for disappointment.

Hope there's a demo as I think this will sink or swim for me based on the feel of the melee combat.

What's with all the throwing of weapons? Surly if you're surrounded by zombies you'd hang on to your weapon!

If you have some backup weapons, throwing them is a perfectly valid option (assuming you can actually get a head shot with a throwing weapon). Take out a sole zombie with a knife when you still have a bat. Nothing worse then getting up close with a Zombie (in real life).

Yes, i just said real life...

    Is there co-op play?

Not sure but I think one of the characters has a bonus to throwing weapons.

Pity the upgrade system is just based on a cash drop mechanic, was hoping for full scavenging items to combine into weapons.

Man I'm gonna be broke September 9th, with this and Space Marine out.

    Talking from experience?

Yupp, 4 player online co-op to tackle the story, no MP modes. Game will throw more zombies at you the more people playing

You might laugh now, but when the Zombie War arrives, you won't :pac:

    that sounds awesome!

Well I doubt it will be anywhere near the quality of L4D 4 player co-op (the best MP I have ever played!) but should be somewhat of a laugh. Will be interesting to see how the co-op is handled.

I watched a gameplay trailer for this yesterday and now more than ever I think it's merely going to be Left 4 Dead without the charm. The initial hype disguises a derivative zombie shooter. Like Dead Nation, the straight up robbery of the 'special' infected from L4D is a joke.

Maybe this will be good, maybe it will be bad. But from everything I've read (a particularly uninspiring preview in Edge) and seen (barring the cinematic trailer) the suggestion is this hasn't an original bone in its dismembered body. And if publishers are still going to insist on crapping out zombie games (a genre I'm more than a little bored of at this point) is it so much to ask that they actually try to do something new? And if you're going to be derivative, at least try to disguise the borderline racism of the voiceovers :pac:

    Disappointing impressions from kotaku...
Sam B is listed on the character selection screen as an expert in blunt weapons. He is the master of all things blunt. He speaks bluntly. He might even smoke blunts, as rappers have been known to do. He effortlessly wields oars, odd bits of wood, hammers, and sticks modified into nail maces via the game's weapon crafting system.

But then I came across this pipe. The level five pipe.

Now I understand role-playing games need to put limits on the power of weapons that characters can wield at any given time, and with experience points and levels, Dead Island certainly qualifies as an action role-playing game.

But this is a pipe. I was swinging around one much like earlier, until it was broken beyond my ability to repair it. What about this new pipe made me incapable of hitting a zombie with it? Is it magical? Did I need to develop my pipe affinity? I am a master of blunt weapons, dammit. It's not like you're going to tell throwing expert Logan that he's too low level to forcefully drop something.
