Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    hiya guys,

is there a learn to play ice hockey programme in santry?ive tried phoning the IIHA but no one ever answers the phone and have sent numerous emails but again no reply?

  • Registered Users Posts: 674 ✭✭✭carnie

Yeah I think it's on Saturday mornings but I'm not 100% on that.. i'll be up in the rink later this evening and I'll double check

  • Registered Users Posts: 44 headlikea

Hi Marc, going by the IIHA website there is Learn to Play on Saturdays, here's the link : http://www.iiha.org/news/674/iiha-launches-learn-to-play-programme-at-santry-national-ice-sports-arena

I don't know if it's still on. There is also Learn to Play on Saturdays at Castleknock on Ice, it's a smaller rink but well organised. I don't know the times but here's the phone number : 086 844 72 74

  • Registered Users Posts: 44 headlikea

Also, I think you have to join an ice hockey club or join the IIHA to use the new rink in Santry, as it is not open to the public yet, but Castleknock is open to the public and I don't think you pay membership fees, just the cost of the session.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 300 ✭✭marc96

yeah im playing for a team, but havent played in 16yrs so wanted to start from scratch and get used to puck handling and stuff.it does say on IIHA website that there is a beginners session but no reply from them and i dont want to drive up there(1 1/5 hrs) for nothing if u know what i mean.

No, you don't want a wasted journey. Keep an eye on this thread and I'm sure someone will have some information for you soon.

  • Registered Users Posts: 674 ✭✭✭carnie

Senior LTP is between 1-2 Saturday afternoon.. Then the kids are 2-3. Also the Hawks are playing the SNL Giants.. afterwards so they might let you stick around for that.

I don't think you need to be with a club for LTP, as it's about learning the ropes of the game. But you probably will have to register with the IIHA or at least get insured.

  • Registered Users Posts: 674 ✭✭✭carnie

Are you on facebook marc? There's a fairly big irish ice hockey group on it and if you need any information that's probably the best place to ask

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 300 ✭✭marc96

do you have a link to their page

In that article they state that they want an Elite League team in for the 2013/2014 season. Is there room for expansion to put in any seats, or have they got that wrong?

  • Registered Users Posts: 44 headlikea

Hi Ping Chow Chi, as far as I know parts of the rink are still under construction, I think they are putting in more viewing seats. Have a look at a post by 'red ice', page 6 of this thread, post#85.

I'm hearing bad news about the Santry rink, seems it's closing down for renovations for a few months, does anyone else know more about this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,072 ✭✭✭OU812

Just heard today, Santry is closing until September/October while they bring it up to code. Health & safety etc. There's probably a lot that could be done to it, but it doesn't make sense to close it unless they need to make changes to the pad.

It's officially closed from tonight :(

Its annoying allright, but IMHO I reckon they should have got proper showers in before opening up. Grand if you are local, but a bit of a pain if you have a long drive back after hockey.

Hopefully the guys open again with the place cleaned up!

The ice rink is closing for the remainder of the summer for renovations and improvements. As such, we will be in touch with all participants for alternative programmes and arrangements in due course.

it only opened on the 26 april only a month and its closin that was stupid

I disagree, start small, see how it is, see if its busy enough to warrent expansion- build it up. Makes sense. Thats where the icedome wasnt great in my book. Big purpose built facilty right off the bat.

Anyone have any news on Santry? I've been hearing only bad things and find it hard to believe it will reopen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,072 ✭✭✭OU812

What have you been hearing wisco?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 637 ✭✭✭Wisco

Just that things on the admin (insurance, planning?) side weren't done properly and therefore rink may not open due to problems on that end. Rumours being rumours, I'm never sure what to believe, but given the history of rinks on this island, it's pretty easy to believe bad news.

  • Registered Users Posts: 44 headlikea

I'm hearing something similar myself, either what you're saying Wisco or that there's problems funding the building work- showers, toilets etc, I'm trying to find out more information.

  • Registered Users Posts: 16 ExIIHA

A good friend sent me a link to Daft.ie where the premises are offered For Sale or To Let, I am also told the plant is on offer as well.

There is a post about this on the International Hockey Forum see the link above. It seems that someone else has come up wih the same information.
I have also had it confirmed to me by a person who was assisting in setting up the rink that this is the building.
What was the IIHA thinking getting involved with this shambles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,072 ✭✭✭OU812

    That's a shame

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 637 ✭✭✭Wisco

I imagine they were thinking any ice is better than none. Guess its back to the inline then :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 44 headlikea

That's a little misleading, there is ice - Castleknock on Ice is still operating, I know it's smaller but can you not practise on it?As far as I'm aware there are ice hockey teams practising every evening there. I mean everyone managed ok in the 80's and 90's with the smaller rinks Dolphin's Barn and Silver Skate in Phibsboro.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,072 ✭✭✭OU812

I heard Castleknock is closing temporarily for maintenance too.

Disclaimer - not 100%, just overheard someone out there

  • Registered Users Posts: 44 headlikea

Hi OU812, I didn't know this, I'll find out more when I go there this week.

Castleknock is closing for 6 weeks, I think sunday is the last day and due to open back up on the 22nd Oct. Celtic Clovers, Dublin Ducks and junior flyers have training there. There's also open pick up on Wednesday and Riot pick up on Sunday. It's small but it's Ice. I've also heard from fairly reliable sources that Santry is gone. It doesn't surprise me given the record of rinks in Ireland.

  • Registered Users Posts: 44 headlikea

Thanks for that info, I didn't know that. No skating for 6 weeks then :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 54 ✭✭Rookey

Think of it as 6 weeks off ice conditioning:eek: I'm clutching at straws here for a positive........

  • Registered Users Posts: 44 headlikea

I don't think there will be any problems in it opening up again in 6 weeks, it's been fairly busy over the summer and the junior ice hockey clubs and figure skating club are successful enough, I just wish I knew this earlier then I would have gone more regularly over the last few weeks (I have a membership card)

well castle knock have just got themselfs a skate shaper on site. I guess they brought it

  • Registered Users Posts: 54 ✭✭Rookey

Does anybody know why Santry closed? I'm on a mission and would love any info possible.

I'm sure it will all come out and we'll all know soon enough. Keep an eye on the Ireland section in the International Hockey Forum's website, there's a link to it somewhere on page 12 of this thread. Mick seems to know what he's talking about because everything he's been predicting seems to be turning out to be accurate so far.

i was training in santry for a month or 2 its not closed down its gettin done up they weren't making enough money with just hockey lads it will be open September, oct to us and the public ill kepp use posted if i hear more

  • Registered Users Posts: 54 ✭✭Rookey

I would love if that was the case.. The problem is the site is for lease again on daft.ie and I know some people who were asked to help with taking it apart inside. unfortunately it appears that our governing body in Ice hockey seem to be a bit backwards about coming forward (Irish Iceless hockey association). I would love if I were proved wrong but over the years it's always been the same s*1t and politics.... sorry rant over, it just really gets my back up!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,046 ✭✭✭✭cena

Castleknock is closing for the six weeks. I asked them my self

  • Registered Users Posts: 54 ✭✭Rookey

just to be clear in case I gave anyone the wrong impression, I was talking about Santry in my rant above.

It always puzzled me just what exactly people mean when they say "It's all Politics ".
In my case I see something wrong and try to correct it. If I didn't that would be apathy, which has to be worse.
Is there any other way to bring about an improvement other than Regime change.
I would love to hear your opinions.

  • Registered Users Posts: 54 ✭✭Rookey

when I say politics when talking about a particular association I use that word because they remind me of stereotypical politicians. What I mean is rather than keeping people informed they hide away until there's no way to hide things anymore. So it was known to them about a month ago (could be more but I don't know) that Santry will close. They mentioned nothing to the public or to the people who pay association membership (maybe the special ones knew, who knows?). Maybe if people knew what the truth was when the IIHA knew the closure could have been prevented but we will never know. People ended up putting pieces together and finding out from people who knew others and so on and so on......
I don't necessarily want to change the regime (maybe one or two in it:rolleyes:) but I honestly think rather than keeping everything to themselves all news and changes should be made public as soon as possible to give people the chance to help and give input. it's a small world and there's people out there who may actually know of others who can help/invest. I'm doing something at the moment but it's still in very early days, it may sound like I'm contradicting myself by not saying anything, but I'm one person and not a representative association. My research could take years but I'm in it now for the long haul so maybe the next generation will get a good chance to do something they love.
Just out of curiosity would you know why the financial statements for 2011 and 2012 are not on their website and from 2004 - 2010 is? just an observation.....
think my post is a bit off topic, I tend to get carried away

Little pissed off about the fact I paid association fees for the year & now I've eight months of them with nowhere to skate

It wasn't always like that, momentum was built, we got the recognition of the IIHF and The Olympic Council. We were the vonderkidz, the success story in World Hockey believe it or not. Relationships with the powers that be, and a rink were built, then it was spirited away into private ownership, World Championship hosting was secured and the finances spirited away again to the rink's backers, leagues were organised and the same few people tried to make that a cash cow too, 2 more rinks, a lot of intrigue, electronic mail tampering, and a little vote rigging later and this is where we find ourselves.
Before a drunk can recover they have to be left alone to hit rock bottom without somebody making it ok for them to go out and get drunk again, before a building can be rebuilt the foundations have to be secured and the rubble removed, before Ice Hockey can start to recover here there has to be regime change.

    @ OU812 - I know it's a lot smaller but Caskleknock is still ice....

I have to laugh, the under 18 tryouts, not bad players at all but 9 of them tried out! I can understand that as not many people have the money to travel 2 hours north for their kids practice....

ExIIHA - I completely agree with what you say. but for as long as I care to remember attitudes have stayed the same where the people who are long in the game give out yet nothing is done. I know there's one or two out there trying to expose the crap in the association and fair play. At the end of the day all I want is a decent size rink where our national players can train, leagues can happen and most of all people can do what they love doing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 16 ExIIHA

Strange that I posted last night and yet I can't see it here ???
I basically said to Rookey that now is his opportunity to do something about the IIHA as there are hints on the IIHA site that they are being bounced into a position where they will soon have to hold an AGM to comply with company law.
There is also mention of an EGM so they can stack the odds in their favour in order to manipulate the AGM that follows. There is more info on the International Forum site which is now back operating having been downed in suspicious circumstances.

What's the story with the "Learn To Play" programmes that were supposedly on in the new ice rink? Seems they aren't running now :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 637 ✭✭✭Wisco

There aren't any rinks to run them on, that's why. Read this thread for more info.

Castleknock will return, and in the shorter term keep an eye out for the Christmas rink in Dundrum, scheduled to open early October.
What the position is with hockey there is not yet clear.

Hopefully Castleknock will re-open mid October. Dundrum on Ice seems to be opening soon enough, here's a link to their facebook page though it doesn't say exactly when it will open : http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dundrum-On-Ice/139478129433448
