Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

bit intermittent at the moment, some older known results were not coming up but but think it's still on a test server/domain. Working ok just now.... definitely better for mother's maiden names on early 20thC marriages

pity they didn't add a references cross match for the early marriages

Seems to be back working again for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,536 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Compared to Familysearch, unnamed children seem to be down as "Unknown" Surname rather than "Male" or "Female" Surname as on FS. Definitely didn't take FS's original transcriptions and build from there based on things like that and some major transcription errors I've found.

This is looking very promising ! I might finally be able to work as easily in the 1950's as I do in the 1850's !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,777 ✭✭✭shanew

I think we killed it again.... it looked like the search by district field was a bit 'iffy', and gave results not in the entered district, or any anywhere near, but the district filter link on the left of the screen worked fine

Anyone notice if you search with a certain mother's maiden name it "loses" it ?

They cover births up to the early 1980s anyway as I just found my own index in there!

Strange how they publish births up to the 1980/90s but will not publish the census of 1926 due to Data Protection issues.

I know which I would prefer to see on-line!

It feels terrible to be ripping it apart immediately after it launches...we were all so excited an hour ago.
    • Slow - hopefully only a short-term issue (loading the whole time I was typing this post).
    • Reports here say births up to early 1980s but I cannot find my own (from the 1970s).
    • Need to tick box and type any letters you like at the start is ridiculous, and have they heard of cookies? I've had to enter it 3 times in my first session already.
    • Need to type captchas!

I'd have more comments, if I'd actually succeeded in more than one search.

Nasty session contamination bug as well. Luckily there's no private/unpublished data involved, but search for Joe Soap and you'll get results for Jane Doe (when site is under load).

Now that I've got it working for one of my rarer surnames - I'm impressed. More details than expected and goes up to very recently deceased people.

I'm guessing here but if you used to Irish version of the site might it be faster ? ;)

Almost certainly not; it'll be the same servers.

More Search Options and Clear All Filters avoids going through this.

I've been busy today and haven't had time to check it out and won't for a couple more hours. Now I find the Boardsie genealogists went and broke it, but ye are all probably being used as testers for the site and they are fixing things as fast as ye are finding them. So by the time I get to it, it will be running like a dream. Thanks guys! :D

Potentially a cabbage question but .... can I still order a certificate based on the info below? In the past I have used the Volume,Page,District info from the indexes when ordering copies in Werburgh St, but I see it only gives a 'Group Registration ID'.

    Example:

    Party 1 Name Michael Sullivan
    Party 2 Name Julia O'Connor
Date of Event 23 June 1928
    Group Registration ID 1455163
    SR District/Reg Area Killarney

Typically you would have to supply that information. These new marriage indexes (after a specific year) give both parties, exact date, and registration district. That information alone will allow the GRO to find the cert for you.

It a huge advance. I really appreciate it.

OK lovely. So it's just a copy and paste job of all the info on the new indexes and the GRO will sort me out.

    Thanks for clarifying:)

Was messing around with the indexes and from 1903 the exact date and names of both parties are included for marriages.

Only covers a few counties...or am I doing this wrong?

Only a few counties have Reg Districts with the same names - it covers all counties including NI to 1921, but it uses the Registration District names. E.g. there's no district called Kildare - its Celbridge, Naas, etc

As frustrating as the site is to use - and hopefully that'll all be ironed out soon - I have filled in a load of blanks for recent events. So kudos to those who made it happen - worth waiting for.

I had the same problem, I could not read some of the captchas so I use the audio version where you have to input numbers called out. That works every time.

Okay so I put my granaunt Annie Maria Bollard into FMP and get her death no problem . Born 1886 dies late 1918 . Birth too although there's a descrepency of two years and its down as Anna Maria but that's par for the course . With this new GRO search not a trace of her birth OR death - any idea why ?

    death - Balrothery / 4th Qtr 1918 / Vol 2 / Page 350

edit : birth is on GRO also , 1884 same year as FMP, just first name. Dont see any volume/page references..

I saw this on Irish Genealogy News just now....

"If you've read this far, you deserve another treat. You might need to sit down for this one. I did. I thought I'd misheard!

Joan Burton, Minister for Social Protection (and, as of half an hour ago, the new Leader of the Labour Party, and Tánaiste) made a surprise announcement at last night's launch of the online GRO database. This is what she said:

“This [the GRO indexes online database] is an investment for the future which allows us to access our past from the comfort of our living rooms. The availability of electronic records is essential for the development of modern genealogy services. With this in mind, I will shortly be publishing the Civil Registration (Amendment) Bill 2014 in which I will be providing for certain historic records to be made available online direct to the public. I look forward to further developments on this wonderful initiative which will allow us, and future generations, access to invaluable information regarding our ancestors."

She went on to say that these historic records would be full register records for births up to 100 years ago, marriages up to 75 years ago, and deaths up to 50 years ago.

    - See more at: http://irish-genealogy-news.blogspot.ie/#sthash.iDP9anWK.dpuf"

A great tip from Claire's blog post:

One irritation of the 'enhanced' indexes is that, even where a date of birth, marriage or death has been provided from the registers, the database is stuck in a 'year of registration' groove. An example from the birth index will explain this: You're looking for your ancestor John Martin Ryan who you know was born on 12 December 1928 but you don't know where. So you search for him using his name and the year 1928. You won't find him.

The reason you won't find him is that his birth was registered in 1929 and you have to use that date in the search fields to locate his birth record, the very birth record which will show the December 1928 birthday! Infuriating, but definitely worth remembering when you can't find someone. This applies for births, marriages and deaths.

So effectively we're going to have what the Scots have, but free. Full indexes, rolling year full records and all extant census data. Will be up there with the best internationally.

not seeing him either... there's is one 'unknown' male Murphy showing up in Rathdown that year, but during the wrong quarter. Do you know the surname of Kenneth's mother ?

    Maureen
    Eithne
    John Pelly
    Emer
    Colman O'Shaughnessy
    Dermod Art Pelly

EDIT: The Times Death Notices from Ancestry confirm his date of birth as 7/9/1916.
