It's every 3 years between the age of 25 to 44 and every 5 years after that.

    Ah cool, thanks.

I got a smear done here (Toronto) as it's free. I wasn't due one until next year as afaik. It came back with atypical cells and the said I'd need to get another done in September, at which point I'll be living in Ireland again.

Anyone know if I'll need to pay for that follow up one? Given that I wasn't due my next "free" one until next year like. I'm 27 btw :)

I'd ring cervical check to ask, but when I had to get additional smears for the same reason, they were free here :)

So I've tried 3 or 4 different types of contraceptive pill (Yasminelle, Microlight and Qlara) and within a few weeks my moods become completely erratic and are so bad that there being no milk in the mornings will lead to an absolute episode of tears and tantrums and honestly feeling like I just can't go to work etc.

As a person I am fairly prone to depression anyway, I get Seasonal depression which I have more or less figured out how to handle and I was very depressed as a teenager.

I spoke to my doctor today and he wasn't much help, I have a prescription for the Cerazette (mini pill), but I'm wondering is there anyone else who had this problem? What solution did you find that worked for you?

At the moment I'm contraception free for about 6-8 months but I'm feeling like my hormones have gone haywire (mad spots, mood swings, migraines) and I think I need to try find some sort of hormone balance that works, but I just don't know where to start. So many options and all that. Any advice is greatly appreciated! -Also I'm only 23, I don't know if that would make a difference. Thanks.

We can't give you medical advice (site wide rule), but I would encourage you to see another doctor who might be more informed on the subject. Different people react differently to different pills. Perhaps see a doctor specialising in women's health to discuss all your queries.

your post is very well timed for me, I had to switch from the combined pill to Cerazette a month ago for other reasons, and my mood has crashed and burned. I'm hanging on in there hoping it'll settle. Would encourage you to find a more helpful doctor though, it's a serious side-effect.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,624 ✭✭✭✭meeeeh

I was on Cerazette. I decided to switch after couple of months when an accident happened to the door handle and we had to change it.

Now I have no patience anymore for wrong contraception. If you think it doesn't work switch to another one. I kind of persisted on Dianette or whatever it is and mood swings and all the otyer stuff did settle after a while. I am lucky that I didn't loose my best friend then because I was complete bitch to him. Not every pill will suit you and even then you don't pick one pill for life. Your needs change, your body changes and with trial and error and good gp for advice you should find something that suits.

I never asked for professional medical advice? I'm asking if anyone else had this problem and if they can recommend something for me to ask my doctor about? He specifically asked me if I had heard of anything i wanted to try.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,691 ✭✭✭Lia_lia

Hey op, I was the same. Tried 3 different pills until I found one that suits me. I've now been on the same one since I was 19, I am 26 now and have had no problems with it. It's a low dose triphasic pill. These pills have 3 different levels of hormones depending how far into your cycle you are. They are often recommend for those with Pms and mood "problems", and they mimic your natural cycle because of the hormone dosage.

It works for me anyway. You may never find hormonal contraception that suits you, everyone is different! I have friends that tried many pills and nothing suited them. My own Mother was the same! Might be worth speaking to a doctor that is more knowledgable in the area.

Mods, I hope that doesn't count as medical advice!

    Heya!

I had similar issues, and I'm not allowed the injection specifically because I have mental health problems.

I've been on cerazette for a few years now with zero impact to my moods or mental health. :)

It's obviously not medical advice I'm giving, but for me, cerazette has had nothing but benefits.

Thanks for the responses everyone, honestly even just hearing someone take it seriously how badly this affects me really helped. It feels like it's dismissed as a problem really easily and the doctors saying things like well you need to let it settle, just belittles how much of an issue this can be in my life.

I won't be taking any of this as actual medical advice, I just wanted to hear from people in the same boat as me because I don't know anyone who's had problems like this before. Thanks again <3

I've decided to go off the pill for a bit. Originally I went on Microlite over 4 years ago due to a really irregular cycle. Then switched to Marviol because I found the other one was making me quite moody. I've lost a good bit of weight since which I think may have had an impact on my cycle. Does anyone have any advice? I thought now that I'm a little healthier that my periods might be more manageable and regular. How long would it take for my period to come back?

I personally would have a chat with GP before making any changes PP. Sounds like a logical plan but you'd just have all the info you need and know more about what to expect

Yeah I was thinking I probably should. I have an appointment with something unrelated tomorrow morning so I'll mention it to her then. :)

Hey I've a quick question. I need to get my implanon removed and another one in. I was looking at the price list of my gp and noticed that the removal and insertion isn't covered by the medical card. It was free when I got it in by the same gp. So I'm wondering does the medical card no longer cover implanon or does it depend on the gp?

Think it used to be covered but it's not covered any more. Cost saving measures etc :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 355 ✭✭rosie16

Damm! Looks like I'll have to fork out the 100e. Cheers for the info though!

So if you got it put in on medical card and then need it removed you have to pay for the removal? Seems a bit unfair on those who can't afford it.

I was taking a pill that I was prescribed in the UK (can't remember the name of it now) but my mood swings around my time of the month were crazy, I felt frustrated for no reason and would really snap at my boyfriend.

Crying over very small things too was very normal for me, such as the bin in the kitchen smelling. I remember coming home one day, the kitchen was a bit messy (really normal though, just a few plates in the sink and the sides needed a quick wipe) and I felt such a sense of despair over it that I sat on the floor and sobbed.

So I went to the doctor but before I went I spoke to a couple of female friends to get recommendations for a female doctor who would actually LISTEN to me.
Found one, she was OK - not amazing but OK - basically she told me it was likely to be the oestrogen (spelling??) in the pill causing my mood swings so she suggested I try a pill with a lower level of it.
I have the prescription at home but by coincidence I split with my boyfriend a few days later anyway, so decided to just come off the pill completely and see how it went.

I am now pill free for over 2 months and very happy - my moods have been a bit emotional but that was because of the break up. It's been 10 weeks now though and I feel good, definitely different to how I was on the pill.
Now of course, being pill free only suits as I'm not sleeping with anyone.
If I meet someone new though and want to go back on the pill I'll be trying the one with lower levels of oestrogen.

Hope you get sorted, contraception can be such a nightmare - men don't know how easy they have it!

I found every pill that I tried nearly sent me off the deep end with mood swings and depression and crying at the drop of a hat. I eventually decided to go with the contraceptive implant and it really suits me. My moods evened out even though every now and then I throw a wobbler but that's to be expected when you have extra hormones swirling around in there. It's all about finding a happy medium really. Definitely talk to a doctor about all your different options but there's not much advice you can be given in what to use and everything affects people differently so it's just a case of trial and error.

I was the same on the mixed pill so came off it. I then also went to cerazette which apart from the spotting, gave me no side effects. Now I have the single hormone coil, levelled out my moods amazingly, I didn't even cry for three months!

I got the spotting too, but it eventually fecked off and now I just don't get periods, except maybe twice a year. :D

I've not bothered with the pill/contraception (gay) but my periods have always been very irregular and recently gotten extremely painful to the verge of me vomiting/faint and near unable to walk for the first day of the blast thing.
But on the nhs website it was saying with the combined pill you are at a high risk of cervix and breast cancer if you use it, but then again if you don't take it you are at a higher risk of womb, ovaries and colon cancer? What the hell?
I am seeing my GP this week to talk about my options but its a bit concerning with either option!
    Any advise?

    Hi,

I'm 24, in a long term relationship and I've never been on any contraception. And am beginning to lose my mind with condoms. Never had kids and have inherited varicose veins so oestrogen is out!

Been considering the copper coil. I have yet to read a pain/risk free review of them! I don't want hormones as I'm also a huge hypochondriac when it comes to cancers (seems to be a possible side effect to everything with hormones)

Stuck between a rock and a hard place.

    Help! Thanks x

Ive to have a surgery so my surgeon says Ive to come off my pill, Cerazette for 6 weeks before it as I am over 40 and there is a blood clot risk etc...

Im not looking for medical opinion.

I havent been off the pill in over a decade. I was switched from Mercilon to Cerazette about 3 years ago and I havent had any issues with it, and havent had a period in 3 years due to being on it.

Im not worried about the contraceptive side of things for 6 weeks, we will manage (although Im allergic to latex!), but I guess Im worried about things like suddenly breaking out with a flood of a period, or turning into the antichrist with hormonal changes!

Anyone ever come off it and anything to report?

I went straight back to my "normal" pill-free cycle.

    Hi ladies!

I'm hoping to get some advice on getting a Brazilian wax done. I've never got a wax done before but I'm strongly considering. I hate the hair down there and I'd really like to get it off. I think it would make things a lot easier/hygienic during menstruation too. Obviously though I'm nervous as hell about the pain side of things! It would be so worth getting it done though so I'm hoping to get some advice. I've never waxed any body part before. I regularly get my eyebrows waxed, they don't hurt me at all. A beautician said I must have a fairly high pain threshold (but I don't know if that would make a difference when it comes to a Brazilian as there's naturally a huge difference.)

I've read on here about Brazilia, a salon in Dublin I believe? Many women on here really recommended them and said that they use hot wax is best. Can anyone else recommend Brazilia/have good stories about then? I'm strongly considering going to them. At least I know I won't be butchered! (Fingers crossed!) Also, any tips on general to get rid of nerves,etc..? Would taking painkillers be a help beforehand. Also, when is the best time to get it done. I remember reading somewhere before that it's better to get done closer to your period/a few days after it ends (can't remember which it was.)

Thanks for any replies in advance, really appreciate it! :)

Founded out recently so figured that I should warn anyone that uses Ovranette that the price has doubled! From talking to my pharmacist he says that they've upped the cost price for them majorly so they have to pass on the difference. I think he may have said something about this getting them in trouble with the medications board (or whatever they're called) so I don't know if that's going to affect the production of it in the future.
