Good find, would be more benefit in a national paper but its good to see Kenny has picked up on Ahern not following through with the promised recruitment.

Cheer up , given the Indo's propensity to ' lift ' stories from other papers it will eventually go National.

It's very frustrating..I was watching Dail session there on tg4..North Tipp FG TD Coonan asked Brian Cowen what assurances he had given Ind TD Lowry about North Tipp regarding transport, infastructure and some casino. Why not mention the garda college..one of the largest employers in his constituency.
If Enda Kenny is so concerned about drop in garda numbers why doesnt he ask the question during Leader's questions where he will get a verbal reply and not a written answer.

He has to say it, fact of the matter is Justice dept have been canvasing for an intake and Minister for finance wont release the funds he promised in April.
I also heard no intake will take place till new Commissioner is appointed and recruitment will be commencing under new commissioner albeit small intakes.

Wg i can guarantee you there's someone in ahern's office cutting and pasting these answers for him so don't read into them!

Your right C-J,in fairness to Dermot Ahern previous times he has confirmed we will be kept and confirmed to my TD in person, always be 1% doubtful human nature I suppose.we will all be in Templemore in new year!:D

The defence forces have once again been given permission to recruit. Why cant Lenihan see sense and recruit Gardai or Ahern even make a similar statement to this....

Another week gone, another week closer and just heard that there is still the possibilty of a small intake (maybe only enough for 1 or 2classes tops) before the year is over.:D
I hope to god there is, but personally I think Jan or early Feb from what most other sources say.

The people joining the army aren't getting much notice so it could be the same with ourselves..Minister for Defence said 'it is intended' that an intake for army will take place in December so I take it those that will be starting haven't been notified yet.

just to let ye know i was in templemore recently for reserve training. not much optimism of an intake soon or even next year. although more reliable sources have said early next year. fingers crossed . i think it can be confirmed that nobody really knows as it sounds no exact plan is in place.

  • Registered Users Posts: 164 ✭✭privatebob

a normal intake for the army only gets about 3 weeks notice anyway,,, so its not short notice atall. They also have a panel of about 80 more to draw on if they are allowed take more on after xmas.. thats the talk. 40 in a platoon.... 120 did there medicals... though a fairly big gang failed

Personally I can't see the govt. going another year without an intake as the last one was May '09.I know there isn't much money to spend but surely even a small intake has to take place.

This is from the Dail Wed 10/11/10.

    Michael Ring (Mayo, Fine Gael)
Question 196: To ask the Minister for Justice and Law Reform when a person who has completed the aptitude test for the Garda Síochána in 2008 can expect to be called for a medical. [41770/10]

Dermot Ahern (Minister, Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform; Louth, Fianna Fail)
I am informed by the Garda authorities that all applicants for Garda trainees selected by the Public Appointments Service undergo a Physical Competency Test, a Medical Examination and also Character Vetting prior to appointment. However, the general moratorium on recruitment and appointments in the Public Service continues to apply to An Garda Síochána.

This Mayo TD seems to be on the case regarding recruitment. I think this is his 3rd or 4th question on Recruitment within the last 2 months or so!
Buy this lad a pint when I see him!

But like everyone else he accpets the same answers and is happy with that. None of them really give a sh1t and only ask the question because someone rang their office and asked them.

Lets hope your right. if an election is called soon which i believe may not be far away, that will be good news for any of us on the panel waiting to get in.

Fact: Garda numbers are at an all time high.

Possibility: Put the Gardai curently performing admin tasks back on the units = increase in numbers on the street again.

Rumour: At a recent sergeants course in Templemore there was a chiefs course there too. The chiefs were told that it could be 2013 before recruitment. I was talking to a sergeant on that course.

Dont mean to always sound negative but it makes sense. Get on with your life. Take a job if offered. Go ahead with your studies.

Numbers arent as high as they were due to large number of retirements and more expected for the end of ths year, numbers at 14000, were at 14600 and promised to be at 15000.
Also, you were talking to a sergeant that was on a course that you say is only a RUMOUR that it took place and what was said?
Your not making sense, why are you so convinced when you post an admitted rumour?
