I sort of admire his sheer cheek. It'll be sore cheeks soon :)

    http://www.newstalk.ie/2011/news/man-jailed-for-12-years-for-welfare-fraud/
A man has been jailed for 12 years for an “audacious and breath-taking” social welfare fraud.

63-year-old Paul Murray of no fixed abode claimed €248,000 under nine different names while he was living in Thailand.

He returned to Ireland every 3 months to claim jobseeker’s allowance.

He also fraudulently claimed disability and supplementary welfare allowances in a number of border and midland counties.

Murray had used a number of different aliases and various false documents to make the claims.

He was caught out when his brother who lived in Australia innocently applied for a passport which Murray had already taken out in his name thereby tipping off passport officials who then contacted the Department of Social Protection.

Murray had served time in the UK in 1994 for similar offences there when he claimed a total of stg£30,000.

and points for air-miles thrown in I suppose.

Aye, one of many I suspect and a lot of them will be home grown too.

12 years is a huge sentance

You could kill a man, get convicted of manslaughter and get less then that

Are they sure it wasn't a Nigerian disguised as an Irishman?

Good to see a judge punishing criminals for a change

He'd still be free if that were the case.

That's a proper sentence... a few more of them and that will tighten things up.

It goes to show you how messed up this country is when the poor and downtrodden have to sign on with the social under 9 identities just to get by.

Nope, they don't. Depending on how long you're on it you can sign on from monthly to every 3 months.. Not 100%.. But I know people who do it monthly and every 2 months.

I suppose you wont collect your dole if you are unfortunate enough to lose your job.

A few more sentences like that and it should save us all money in the long run.

12 years is a bit steep.

How long did Ivor Callely get ?

    Maybe - I dunno (honestly).
Does it act and be effective as a deterrent?

Idiot, why didn't he just bite a baby instead?

Two things though, claiming under 9 different names and getting 250k seems a bit odd unless it very short term and 12 years for a non-violent theft seems a bit on the harsh side to me compared to everything else that goes on.

Poking fun at how such threads usually bring out the usual plebs with "was probably a Nigerian" and other such comments.

And he was only two years from retirement....

Seriously though, 12 years is a bit harsh

I would say that this case will just give some fellas the idea, he managed to scam the system for 12 years and it was just dumb luck that he was caught.

Still I hope he enjoys being his cellmates ladyboy for the next couple of years, he deserves it.

Judge Anthony Kennedy of Mullingar Circuit Court

65 travellers rioted in Mullingar in 1998 and not one of them served time
Read out all their sentances and then at the end announced they were suspended, seems he was playing games with them by waiting until the end.
Defendants had to wait until Judge Kennedy had read through all 65 sentences before he stated that all were suspended, at which time there was an audible gasp of relief from the defendants standing at the back of the court room.

    And another one
Egidijus Peciulis (30), from Joncua, Lithuania, Gytis Zienius (35) and Ovidijus Rumba (30), both from Kaunas, Lithuania, admitted robbing almost €94,000 in rings from Angela Blacoe Jewellers in Athlone on March 6th, 2010
He imposed five-year prison sentences on the trio backdated to March 10th. The remainder of the sentences was suspended on condition they return to Lithuania and stay out of Ireland for 10 years.

They served about 11 months and were told to leave the country

And this 63 year old man is engaged in fraud and gets 12 years?

Wildly inconsistent and I know every case is different.

Ridiculous sentence. Every judge in Ireland should be raped.
