I thought id start a thread on ice creams.

i know alot of them aren't safe for vegatarians due to the source of whey solids and lecitin.

but which ones out there are? all of HB's range bar the plain vanilla seem to be out of reach from us veggies.

ive tried emailing walls/HB for a definitive list on 3 occassions with no response.

i also think aldis do ice cream which they do mark as suitable.

    just wondering whats out there

I thought the HB ones were ok???

As far as I remember, most of the Mars range (Ice Cream Mars, Snickers, Aero, etc) are NOT vegetarian!

Best to stick with Swedish Glacé and Tofutti!

Yeah I also thought HB ones were ok. I'm not really into ice cream though.

Didn't HB make some very very nice chocolate soya-based ice cream?

    http://www.loveicecream.com/ie_en/products/default.aspx?brand=HB_Soya&subbrand=HB_Soya&product=121

I know you didn't ask for vegan ice cream, but that one's so chocolatey and mmm. Not sure if it's still available in Ireland though.

They used to do that one and a strawberry one and it was really nice, it disappeared a while ago though :(

As you can see, it is islamic, but still mostly relevant to veggies. Haraam means forbidden, while Halal means allowed, however, most Halal foods do contain calf rennet. From what I can tell, very nearly all HP ice creams with milk in them use calf rennet, so they aren't veggie. Thats no magnums, carte dor, cornettos or vienettas, unless they specifically say suitable for veggies :(

Swedish Glace is the best vegan ice cream i think. Got some in my local super valu last night

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,911 ✭✭✭Washout

ive gotten an offical list from from HB/Walls

doesnt make for good reading :( for ice cream lovers like me

Thanks Washout. I'm going to stick a copy of your post in the sticky of info post to keep it easily available for the future. Am also shocked by the presence of whey in so many :(

Oh jesus. This is not good news. Ugggh...

Well... At least my beloved B&J is okay. I hear they don't use gelatine in their marshmallows which is nice.

Just did a quick google on Häagen-Dazs as I had a bit last night and didn't spot it on any of the lists. Apparently it's alright:

    Is Häagen-Dazs suitable for vegetarians?

Häagen-Dazs ice cream is derived purely from fresh cream and the emulsifying agent is egg-yolk. Häagen-Dazs Sorbets (available in Häagen-Dazs cafès) contain the gelling agent pectin (which is derived from fruit), thus holding to our commitment to use only the finest, pure ingredients.
I guess the next question that springs to mind is... free-range. They never say it is vetetarian, only list the ingredients. But, this may not be an issue for some veggies.

    Carte D'or Strawberry & Yoghurt Delice 900ml
    Carte D'or Mango Sorbet 1L
    Carte D'or Blackcurrant Sorbet 1L
    Carte D'or Lemon Sorbet 1L
Carte D'or 5.5L Raspberry Sorbet Artiscoop
Carte D'or 5.5L Lemon Sorbet Artiscoop
Carte D'or 5.5L Mango Sorbet Artiscoop
Carte D'or 5.5L Mandarin Sorbet Artiscoop
(All contain Enzyme from a porcine origin in the milk protein)

    What does that mean?
Sounds like a genuine Frankenstein creation
A pig enzyme in milk from a cow?

Most of the ice pops appear to be OK so I think I'll just stick with those to be safe. You really wouldn't expect some of that stuff at all. Lots of the ice cream isn't alright :( Thanks for putting the list up.

I did think that was worded a bit vaugely but I didn't think of that tbh. :( I guess that's another one crossed off the list. Sigh :(

I'd be careful with the ice pops too, I bought a box of Mr. Freeze during the week and haven't been able to eat any because there's glycerol in them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,126 ✭✭✭sweet-rasmus

Ah, glycerol is most likely from plant origin. But indeed, it can be sourced from plant or animal origin. How about writing to the makers of Mr Freeze? I wrote to Colgate about it before and it was grand. I guess flour tortillas is another thing it's always in... But when the tortilla packet says "Suitable for vegetarians", then you know that's ok at least.

i dont eat eggs so b&j and haagan daas are out for me.

    Good news everyone!

I finally got a reply from Robert Roberts about Mr. Freeze today!
    Hi Laura,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you but we only just received confirmation from the manufacturer today-
The Glycerol is used as a "carrier" for the flavour and is from plant origin. The product is suitable for Vegetarians.

I hope this clarifies for you.

Many thanks for your support of Mr. Freeze!

    Best regards,

    Gillian

    Yay! :D

    Am I missing something?

According to that list, practically all the popular Ice-lollies/pops are NOT suitable.

Nearly everything I though would be veggie seems to be not.

Swedish Glace and Boojum Boojum are two vegan/vegetarian ice creams that are seriously delicious :) You won't miss the milk, trust me! You can get Swedish Glace in supermarkets and Boojum Boojum in health shops and Fallon & Byrne (it's pricey but it's raw and yum)
Sad that so many ice-creams are not-veggie :(

I just found a link http://www.bitterwallet.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/vegi-list-B.jpg that says that ben and jerry's chocolate fudge brownie isn't vegetarian either even though all ben ad jerry's ice creams have been promoted as being vegetarian in the past even on their own website.

Apparently, they can't use the European Vegetarian Union logo on some of their flavours because they use ingredients sourced from the states, but they are vegetarian. I know the brownies they use in the chocolate fudge one comes from a bakery in New York. (I remember reading about it online a million years ago.) I noticed on the list you linked to, in brackets next to the B&J flavours it just says something to the effect of "Not approved by the EVU" and doesn't list what's in them that isn't suitable like they do with the other products. I guess it's down to the individual who they trust.
