Boycott the Irish Daily Mail

I'd appeal to anyone not to buy the Irish Daily Mail. It is a rag of the highest order. Not only is it a rag - it's a right-wing, anti-immigrant, anti-Irish, anti-Europe, racist piece of crap.

Here are 2 stories that appeared in English version in the past:

1994 : Paul Johnson (Columnist).
Whilst writing on of the Mail's favourite topics - sponging immigrants - he said that certain nationalities specialise in defrauding British taxpayers "First into the field, needless to say, were the Irish", he wrote, accusing us of flocking to Britain to claim the dole "as a kind of patriotic duty".

1996 : Bruce Anderson (columnist)
In an article attacking Ireland's then EU Commissioner over his European agricultural policies, he repeated Johnson's allegations, and said "As soon as you arrive in Ireland you leave the modern world". He described the West of Ireland as "a world of farm subsidies and corruption... based on the pig and potato and ruled over by the priest".He also libelled Padraig Flynn personally by trotting out all the usual anti-Irish character stereotypes. The Mail eventually publically apologised for this article, and paid-out damages to Flynn.

I had to laugh at the add, "she buys it to keep herself fit" as she runs across a bridge looking at the newspaper. I wonder how long it is before she gets splated by a truck.

People who complain about a readership of a paper other than their favourite are the ignorant snobs of the highest degree in my opinion.

If you dont like it, dont buy it... but to hold a grudge against someone who does is just ridiculous.

I work in the UK regularly and the B&B where I stay always has this paper. I would have to agree that is very right wing in its approach. A lot of stories have an anti-immigrant, anti-EU, pro-British undercurrent. Which is fair enough - everyone in the UK knows that and can choose to ignore the paper if they wish.

I remember one particular headline on the paper a few months after September 11th 2001. Something like... "While world fights terrorism - Ireland honours their terrorists" (along those lines)

It was about the reinterment of bodies of executed IRA men from Mountjoy to Glasnevin.

Ohhh here we go. Yes they should have published them, why fear muslims? They're all insane [generalisation]. You publish a cartoon and they go killing and burning. Look at what southpark did with Jesus. Did we go burning canadian flags? No. We cannot accept this behaviour from muslims.

No - I'm all for freedom os speech but I don't see why an anti-immigrant and anti-Irish paper with a racist agenda should succeed here in Ireland.

They can print what they like - I'm just hoping that people won't buy it and they fail miserably.

Just as I expected.
I doubt they'll keep the "anti-Irish" view you appear to feel they have.
Anything else, be it right-wing, anti-immigrant etc.., is freedom of speech (within reason of course - libel laws etc.) and there's obviously a market for it here.
Don't shoot the messenger...

Flogen - I just felt it appropriate to ask regarding the cartoon issue as I had to find out if the OP would boycott a paper if it published material offensive to others.

I'm actually stunned they tried to market it here. The Mail is a right-wing, Tory, middle-England newspaper that so concerned with warning it's readers about immigrants and travellers that they often do little else. Why they think it'll be a success here is beyond me.

I'm not calling for the paper to be banned just boycotted - there's a big difference. Like I said previously I'm all for free speech.

It has clearly proved that it is anti-irish and therefore I don't see why Irish people should buy the paper.

Well why are the Sun and the NOTW successful? And I'm sure there are plenty right-wing conservative types here who will simply lap up stuff against immigrants and travellers, unfortunately:( Hope not, but it will probably sell pretty well.

Just heard on the Joe Duffy show that one of their journalists tried to gain entry to the labour room that Miriam O Callaghan was recovering in at Holles St hospital.

The journalist posed as a family friend before being confronted by Miriams husband.

I know that most tabloid journalists are lowlifes but that was as low as it gets.

She underwent a C-Section and I presume all the journalist wanted was a picture of her looking exhausted without wearing any makeup.

That's not hypocrisy at all.

A boycott is a method of expressing disapproval, so it's covered under freedom of expression as well. It might work towards the failure of the paper, but that's not censorship, it's disapproval. As long as it's not in a violent manner, and you don't have control over the person expressing their views (an important element) it's not curtailing any freedoms.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean you can't criticise others' opinions and attitudes!
