Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

gps of route (from 2010 event): here

This race is a charitable concern. It is organised by Debra Ireland, website here: http://www.debraireland.org/

Debra Ireland's mission is to fund the development of treatments and cures for all forms of Epidermolysis Bullosa, and meanwhile to do all in its power to alleviate the suffering caused by EB. Please click onto this short but inspiring clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Td95Zxizpus

Registration cost: €20, and all participants must fundraise minimum €50 for DEBRA Ireland (so effective cost is €70). Organisers are hopeful participants raise as much funds as possible as every euro helps the cause directly. Included in registration: Bus Transfer to race start, All usual Race Support along the route, Post race Tea and Coffee.

An option for a 10k route on the day will be announced in due course.

    Thread from last year: here

My role is one of helping Debra Ireland out for this event. I myself have registered to take part. Its a great event so if you can't take part you might support someone else who can. If you've any questions please post them here or send me a PM. Thanks.

    Hi SJ
Sounds interesting, is the route marked? or is it easy to follow?
My navigation skills are rubbish :D

I like the sounds of this and it suits timewise, just have to get the OK now as I had been thinking the Meath half but would prefer this.

Just registered for this now, hopefully use it to show the boss how I'm fixed for Wicklow way :D

Did this last year, nice track and was well marked and marshalled. Good buzz both before and afterwards so reckon i'll be back. Tough though.

Ran this last year and got lost,my own fault to be honest.
Nice tough hills but surface is excellent and a race not to be missed.
Great to support debra Ireland, the speech before the race brought a tear to everyones eye.

Great to have you Woddle. The more the merrier. Its a pretty special route. Marking was spot on, and they'll have distance markers out every 5k I believe too.

Do I need trail runners to do this?

3 weeks out from Conn, might be a nice way to start the taper!

Ideally yes. Between 17 and 18k of this will be offroad and some of it is liable to be wet and mucky so trail runners are needed, or you'll be slipping and sliding some. I wore inov-8s the last time out and they worked out well.

    Hey,

Thanks for the reminder, this is a great run, I've done it the last 2 years, some amazing scenery, especially as you come down into Glendalough!

It's great to have in the calendar for March, keeps the focus on the new years resolutions!

Very well run event for a great cause, would recommend this to all.

    Cheers,
    Al.

Myself and the missus have signed up for this and we've persuaded a few friends to get involved too. Really looking forward to it. Looks like a stunning, if challenging, course. Also a really great cause.

Cool! Spread the word. I must start getting the miles in the hills in in preparation.

Did up a schedule for this last night. A nice 10 week program from this week. A nice target if you fancied a Quarter 1 objective.

Can you share the plan? I assume that there is a bit of Hill Running involved in the Training - had planned on doing a road HM around this time but this could be interesting

Its fairly rough, but it'll do the job for me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 335 ✭✭petermijackson

Thanks for that. I've never done much mountain running....is this half marathon too big of an introduction to mountain running? I usually run on the road or grass....I completed the London and Dublin marathons last year and have a good base built over the last 4 weeks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,800 ✭✭✭thirstywork2

If you have a couple of marathon's under your belt you will have no problem.one tough climb on the course.Just like any race,if you pace yourself you will no problem.

When you get onto the road running sections on this race it feels so easy compared to the hills :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,441 ✭✭✭Slogger Jogger

Registrations are going steady on this I'm told. 9 weeks to the race. 1 week of training in my legs, incl. a rather torturous half marathon distance with hills session yesterday which included a kilometer with 10% gradient. Still, it should get easier as the weeks go on ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,441 ✭✭✭Slogger Jogger

A 10k option has opened for registration. It starts at the Wicklow gap with a mainly downhill run to finish at the Brockagh centre.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,029 ✭✭✭DigiJem

Signed up for this, and looking forward to it. Last tough run before the taper for Conn.

Just bumping this up again to remind donothoponpop people about a great event in the hills of Wicklow. Its not cheap but its not a commercial venture either. All for a very worthy cause. I'm enjoying the focus this is giving me and counting down the weeks.

Cheers, I'd love to do it, but its €70- no way I can justify that, worthy cause or not. I'll sponsor you a few quid, and recce it with you some day. I can kick your ass during the recce :D

I'm hoping to recce this course on Sunday week with a couple of friends. None of us have been out that way before. Is there a marked trail back to Glendalough?

It's pretty much all St. Kevin's way so there are waymarkers. I'll dig out my gps link from the race 2 years back and if you have a garmin you should be able to upload and follow the route. That, or be good on the map nav.

Thanks for that Slogger Jogger. I'll upload that course to my Garmin although judging by my previous efforts at using my Forerunner to navigate I'll most likely end up using a map.

Fair play lads, ran this last year but cant this year, really good cause! Hard slog at first til you get over the pass then its super fast all the way down the valley and one killer hill at the end!! Enjoy!

Almost full up I believe, which I think is approaching the 300 mark.

SJ, would there be many places left for this ?
Looking at entering as a prep for the Wicklow Way Trail, plus any chance to run in this area is worth a look.

Good for you. Nearly full I hear but not totally. Try the Debra Ireland website. If they accept your registration you're in.

I am a novice at this mountain/hill running thing....Does anyone know how easy it would be to follow this 1/2mara course or would you need to do some practise on the course. Would you need special reccie type preparation or be prepared with compass etc? Also will there be water available on the course?

    Appreciate if anyone can help!

Its really straightforward so theres no need for compass or recceing the course. As far as I remember there were 2 water stations last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,441 ✭✭✭Slogger Jogger

Yep, its all clearly marked and if memory serves there were 2 water stops. If you can practice doing some runs offroad and on hilly terrain you'll be better prepared come the day.

thanks for replies folks, I entered and then had visions of me running around mountains in cirlces getting thirsty!
So this is a bit of a relief ....

Just take it handy and you'll have a great day in the hills. The run down towards Glendalough is beautiful.

Less than 20 spots left I believe before its full up.

I just signed up. Must be one of the last in.

I think it will be good practice for the Wicklow Way trail a couple of weeks later and the "don't mention the ---" multisport race in mid April. :D

2 days to go. Looking forward to it. I ran a decent time 2 years back. Its difficult to compare events like this year on year as the weather and underfoot conditions can be dramatically different. I'd be happy to be anywhere near my 2 years ago time. Anything else is a bonus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 752 ✭✭✭Sandwell

Best of luck Slogger Jogger and to anyone else that's running. It looks like you're going to get a perfect day for it. I'll be down there to support the missus and some friends but unfortunately I've had to pull out myself due to injury. I'm pretty gutted about it as this had been my goal race throughout the winter. We did a recce a few weeks ago and it really is a fantastic route with a bit of everything in terms of terrain.

Hi just registered to use this as I have one quick query so I hope I am in the right place and doing this right. Packed all my stuff last night and I have just realised now that I left my trail runners at home. Luckily I have my normal running shoes with me for today so will these be okay for tomorrow or should i pop out and buy a cheap pair of trail runners just for tomorrow. Thanks a million for any assistance ya can give me.

@Andrewg. A race isn't the time to be trying new runners. While not ideal you are better off sticking to your road runners. They'll be fine for the trail bits but not so god for the boggy bits.

cheers slogger jogger yeah exactly. My won stupidity but Il just stick to the road runners. Thanks

Beautiful day for it today. I hadn't done much training for the half marathon and really should have! Really tough course, lots of hills and even the downhill stuff was rough so you couldn't pick up any time on it.

Course was well marked with decent water stations.

Very tough but loved it. Great cause too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,441 ✭✭✭Slogger Jogger

Minor gripes aside (bus driver didn't know where the start was and it started late by about 1/4 hour) this was a great event. I believe the lead 2 runners did go astray so they must have taken their eye off the markings which I thought were top notch. Its a pity as Aengus Burke was running well at the front.

Perfect conditions today for it. Route was drier that I remember it. I found it tougher though than 2 years ago and struggled on the flatter roads (believe it or not). Finished in 1:41ish so happy with the time but there is room for improvement there.

A Ferns Sliabhe Buithe 1 and 3 I believe. David Leonard and Bernard Fortune. Not sure who was 2nd?
Ema Donlon was 1st lady home.

If you like your hill running you'd like this event.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14 Pheidippides

This was my first mountain race and I achieved my main goal of finishing with my ankles unscathed! I have to admire the true mountain runners that were able to fly downhill on the rough ground. I was able to catch a few of them again when the ground was more "road like". Got in under 2 hours and was happy with that as I didn't have a clue what to expect. Overall for those who want to try something different this was a great event and well organised. Fairly easy to follow the course (although not as easy if you were leading)! My DS trainers have never seen muck like that before!

I actually bought some Solomans 2 weeks ago and wore them for 8 miles and was getting blisters so lesson learned should have invested a few weeks earlier and gotten used to them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,029 ✭✭✭DigiJem

Great event, top marks to the organisers. A tough route for me anyway but it was easy to follow; very well marked from start to finish. Given the warm day, there was plenty of much-needed water on hand. Debra are a great charity, hope today was successful for them.

2nd place was me. First trail/mountain event, so very pleased with that. Tough course, especially the downhill terrain and that uphill section at miles 10 -11! Very well organised, even with a long wait at registration and a rush to the bus! I might have to invest in a pair of trail runners now - it seemed that the downhill rocky sections were where they are needed most, and maybe less prone to waterlogging too.
