Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Correct - far too easy though, knew I shouldn't have picked the most obvious ship either !

Nice one with the cab, I'm inspired!

I'm wondering if it's better to splash out on the best condition cab I can find, pay a premium and save myself the work doing it up as I'm utterly clumsy at anything involving wiring, soldering or generally anything that involves me having to do anything remotely outside of my DIY/Electronics comfort zone.

Get a cab - its the way forward

As for your listing of machines - if you do go to Tokyo, you'll pick up 90% of that for reasonable money in Super Potato in Akihabara.

It's definitely on my list, I'm getting married in 5 weeks though so it will have to wait!

I'd need to check in about 5 extra suitcases just to fill them with 'stuff'! What about mailing back to Eire? Import tax? Cheaper anyway than buying on eBay etc?

Japan is on the cards for the honeymoon later this year so I'll be hounding all of you with the .jp knowledge of where to go as quickly as possible so my by then wife won't kick my head in for using our honeymoon as an excuse to go game shopping! :D

2 good reasons to watch the following youtube vid (I've link straight to the point in the vid)

1)Info on a sweet arcade in Akihabara
2)Drool at the row of shmups being played (1min 16s)

I'm surprised he was allowed bring a camera in there.

But yes: if I was religious, heaven would be Hey! Akihabara. It really is paradise on Earth. Any shmup fan must complete the pilgrimage to the place.

A very nice French docu with 'Frenglish' subs on the history of SHMUPS.

Split in 3 parts, video above is for part 1. Though I've linked the playlist below for all 3 parts. Check out the related videos too for a fun docu on the history of arcade games though I see no 'Frenglish' subs for that one.

Jamestown is out now on Steam.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,182 ✭✭✭ondafly

not quite sure on the graphics style - seems very Zelda-ish ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 699 ✭✭✭blag

It's definitely a little different from the Cave graphical style, not necessarily a bad thing for me at least.

I haven't played it yet but will download it later, it's less than £7 and have read a lot of positive things about it. Have also heard about some technical issues and glitches etc but the developers have said a patch is coming.

Wow, looks interesting. First thing that came to mind when I saw it visually was Demon Front. Must have a similar colour palette or something.

Anyway, this is yet another reason why I hate Steam. I'd love a physical copy of this.

Saw that Jamestown somewhere before. Assembler maybe or Shmups.com?

Reminds me, I really want to start getting in to Doujin titles. Crimson Clover and Tohou are immediate titles I'd like to swipe.

By the way, I feel I must put out an APB for the D2 area. If you see a copy of Space Invaders Anniversary for PS2 lying in a skip, it's mine. I think the cleaner in my office threw the envelope I left it in out in the trash the other night and it's gone.

A reward of €1.48 and a non-threatening yet equally mature and respectable 'homme aux homme' pat on the back is waiting for the person that retrieves it!

Too late! I've arrived home and it's currently snuggled in on my shelf in between my Hori and my Green Goblin. Splendid!

Pics of the entire haul will be coming up this week. Maybe a YT video actually as I've quite a bit of stuff to go through (and a few more bits still in the mail from .jp!).

    Stay tuned... :)

...one of which landed on my desk this morning. Surprisingly speedy delivery from Japan too. Very pleased!

I think a YT video would be fun to go through everything, I'll try and record one this week (preferably when the good woman has gone out for the night so I don't feel weird and stupid taking snaps of my stuff and speaking Geekrish at my camcorder).

When I get my 'surgically enhanced' PAL PS2 and 'surgically enhanced' NTSC PS1 back from forum favourite (and all-round 'good chap') docentore tonight I can play test and record some footage.

Rather excited to be cataloging the first proper steps in to my SHMUP investment collection. You'll probably think what I've bought is all very standard fare but it's a start! :o

Looking forward to sharing the haul with you lot later this week. Stay tuned... :)

    rRootage Online HD

    Fast Striker

    Astrowings

    Sky Force Reloaded

That actually looks fantastic. Not only are you getting the standard game but also a new mode, a new character, new score, powerups etc. Well worth the purchase I think!

Wish they'd announce the release date and I hope it'll be iPad-friendly.

IPhone stuff looks interesting - some new ideas in there (Treasure!). Impressed at some of the tech Iphones can handle these days.

I really want to upgrade to a device capable of handling Cave shooters. Obviously with a joystick in hand is still the idea way to play, but some sort of bullet hell would make bus journeys that bit more enjoyable :)

I got it for £35 + £5 delivery on eBay. It's in very good condition. No rusting, responsive buttons etc. Very happy with it. The throw seems great too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

As promised here's the videos. Prepare to be bored to tears and feel free to extract the urine. :)

NB: I did record this at 1080p but had to reduce the resolution thanks to the 1gb+ file size which for a video of this nature is just a tad excessive!

If you videos like this, I'll do more as new stuff arrives. Looking to do some gameplay videos and/or reviews too if anyone's keen. Nothing startlingly brilliant but might be interesting to someone nonetheless.

    Slainte. :)

Thanks for that. Terribly boring video I know but there was a lot to go through.

Still to cover other stuff I didn't include but have to wait until the good woman is out for the night so I don't look weird taking photos of games and recording myself playing video games and talking about them to myself. :D

Absolutely smashing choice of game there. Blazing Star is a complete and utter masterpiece.

One of the best SHMUP's ever made. Extra Cho Aniki points for you for playing it in your cab. Good work. :)

An exquisite choice, though I would recommend you pick up an arcade stick for that one else you won't benefit from the best possible experience playing it.

Go for the 'Green Goblin' (AKA the official stick). I paid £25 plus postage from the UK for mine I think.

Also got Halo 2 steelbook and Capcom vs SNK Millenium to fill the packet. :)

Get yourself Soukyugurentai. Not too expensive but still one of the saturns best. Not sure of the price of these but Salamander Collection, Batsugun, Silhouette Mirage, Thunderforce V, Battle Garegga, Layer Section/Galactic Attack, Darius Gaiden, Metal Black, anything Parodius, Game Tengoku.

If you really want to go bananas there's always the awesome version of Hyperduel on the saturn and Radiant Silvergun.

If you want to go all out and get the absolute daddy of saturn games and the one that no collection is complete without then you really must get Cho Aniki.

Exactly! The game is so amazing that it brings a smile to the face of anyone that plays it. Radiant Silvergun is widely regarded as the best shmup on the saturn by people that don't know games while the shmup experts will tell you that cho aniki is by far and away the bst thing on the system.
