Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Maybe this is inappropriate for this thread... and you know, feel free to delete this post, I'll understand... but I really think all new students should be warned against buying anything from this thread until a week or two into term.

Everyone here knows the booklists can change, and often do, year to year. Part of me really doesn't like the idea of people trying to flog books to gullible pre-first years who are going to get stung with a bunch of books that quite possibly won't be on next year's reading lists for whatever subjects. Or the editions/translations might be different etc. etc.

Whether I'm right or wrong, I think anyone starting in Maynooth next September should not buy a single thing here till they find out the actual reading lists from their lecturers. Not from the department websites! Because they can change right up into the beginning of the semester. And not from students who assure you this is the way it is. But from the lecturer, in class, first week of term.

And people should shop around too. I've seen things brand new on the bookdepository that were significantly cheaper than people were selling here second hand. But new students don't think of these things. So maybe I shouldn't be pointing it out to them in the opinions of some? But for some reason it really bothers me that they might be getting fleeced.

/end of annoying old fart rant

As far as I know, this is useless for incoming first years.

They need to buy it new so that they get some unique code to use 'Mastering Chemistry' online. It's stupid really, making people splash out €60 for a new book!

You can actually just buy the access code online for around €15 (something that I learned after shelling out the €60..) :/ So it'd actually work out cheaper to get the code and a secondhand book.

Just FYI don't go running out to buy law books. They are hugely expensive and you prob won't need them all that much tbh. Nutshells and the Library will do you just fine!

Nutshells are the law equivalent of Less Stress More Success, are only €25 and will become your best friend during your college years

I'd only recommend buying books if you are planning on using them after college (eg for KI or FE1s) and even that's still a maybe.

I totally agree. Nutshells were the only law books I used last year and did well enough in my exams. If I was really stuck for cases for my assignments, then I borrowed a book from the library for couple of hours. Law books which are recommended by the lecturers in my opinion can be boring and difficult to understand, whereas in Nutshells everything is really straightforward.

I actually have 2 Nutshells for sale:

Tort (Second Edition) by Ursula Connolly €20
Contract Law by Fergus Ryan €20
    or €35 for both

These books are in great condition but there might be few words underlined or something marked with a pencil (it may only help you!)

I also have 1 Sociology book for sale:
Global Sociology (Second Edition) by Cohen and Kennedy €20 which will be used for Global Society module. The lecturer usually asks to read a specific chapter before each lecture and this book has to be referenced in the exams. It's in great condition as well, however there are few marks in one or two chapters which I had to prepare quite well for my exam.

And finally I have 2 French books for sale:
Poetes francais des XIXe siecles €2
Un Secret by Philippe Grimbert €3
