It's very difficult to know who will be going to the Europeans with the Olympics just 5 weeks after....some people will use those champs to prepare, others will stay clear so as they can peak in London. I think I read that Gillick has Helsinki in his plans in order to prepare for the rounds of the 400m. Also most athletes who have not achieved the standards for the Olympics but have the European standard will likely use that competition in order to have a crack at the qualifying mark.
I would think we might see a lot of our Olympians at the Europeans. It's also a great opportunity for our women's 4x400m squad to nail down that Olympic place for sure...they are ranked 12th in the Olympic rankings with the top 16 teams achieving qualification when the deadline arrives. Even if they don't improve on their times from last year they still have a very good chance of qualifying. But I am sure they will be even faster this year with Joanne Cuddihy getting back to good form.

In sailing news, our men's 470 team of Ger Owens and Scott Flanigan have placed 9th in both race 2 and race 3 at the men's World Championships in Barcelona today. They have so far put together a strong scorecard that keeps them towards the top of the rankings in terms of Olympic qualification. They are due to have another race today and another top 10 placing would be a very welcome result.

Yep it'll keep us ticking over until the big one comes... I'd say some athletes will show more emotion by actually making the standard than those winning the medals. Some of the distance races could be interesting, probably they won't be won at a crawl due to the fact that athletes are chasing the standards.

The Irish men's 470 duo of Owens and Flanigan have placed 10th in race 4 meaning that they have had a very good day in the battle for Olympic qualification. I will update with a list of the current standings when it is made available but it has to be said that they are well on track for a place in London 2012. Another consistent day in the top 10 tomorrow should cement that Olympic quota place.

At the men's Finn World Championships in Falmouth, Ireland's Ross Hamilton endured another disappointing day of racing placing 45th and 58th in today's races. He has racked up an unwelcome total of points on his scorecard now that would suggest his chances of making the Olympic quota positions are now on the slim side.

Well in fairness that was a little early for the London games.

An Olympic forum would be perfect for threads like this. Another one with information for fans who will be attending, especially with a lot of Irish living in London they could give local knowledge. Ticket information (although it's getting late for that), I'm sure Dan would be starting an Irish at the Olympics thread or something. You could have a thread for predictions, another for betting tips. A drug scandal thread.

Yes the Europeans will be very watchable this year. I know there's a good few Irish athletes putting in huge effort to get the times in Helsinki. For some it will be their last chance to make the Olympics so yes expect lots of jumping around and tears of joy from some even if they only finish top ten but get the time.

Here is the current state of play in terms of Olympic qualification at the Men's 470 World Sailing Championships in Barcelona. The top 7 nations in this list at the end of the competition will earn quota places for the London 2012 Olympics. Overall the Irish duo of Ger Owens and Scott Flanigan lie 15th overall but are crucially in 3rd place in the battle for Olympic qualification.

Note: I have only included the countries that the Irish guys are in competition with in terms of Olympic qualification. Remember the lower the score the better. A first place finish in a race will add just 1 point to that team's total, and a 30th place finish adds 30 points to that team's tally, not a good result for their ambitions of a good finish overall.
The top 7 on this list at the end of the competition will be awarded Olympic quota places for their respective countries.

Unfortunately Ross has virtually no chance of making the Olympic quota places now at this stage (top 6 in the above list). Hard luck to him.
In better news, the Irish men's 470 duo of Ger Owens and Scott Flanigan had another good day on the waters in Barcelona. They finished in the top 15 in both races today meaning their campaign for Olympic qualification remains bang on track. I will update later when I get official results. They may actually have done enough to secure Olympic qualification at this stage.

Ger Owens and Scott Flanigan have qualified Ireland a quota place to sail the men's 470 event at the London Olympics. Their results today (13th in both race 5 and 6) seen them qualify for the gold fleet. Due to the fact that the field has been split into gold and silver fleets they are now guaranteed to finish in the top 7 of those unqualified nations in the rankings thus meaning they have done enough to earn Olympic qualification. Excellent news, our fifth boat to qualify for the Games. Ireland's team has now grown to 48 members, 8 of which will be competing in Weymouth for the sailing competition. Sailing is only second to athletics in terms of Irish qualifiers for 2012...it has been a very successful qualifying campaign for our sailors for the most part. Well done to them.

Irish lightweight boxer Katie Taylor has received a walkover this morning at the World Championships in China as her opponent from Romania failed to show up. This means Taylor is now guaranteed a medal and even more crucially, if another European boxer loses in the quarter finals in this division this morning then Katie will be officially qualified for London 2012.

Big news this morning for all you Irish Olympic fans...Katie Taylor has qualified for London 2012!
A defeat for the French boxer has meant that there can be no more than 3 Europeans in the lightweight semi-finals thus ensuring that Taylor will get one of the 3 Olympic quota places for Europe in this division.

At the European Olympic Qualifying event for Canoe Sprint in Poznan, Poland, Ireland's Neil Fleming finished in 5th place in his heat of the men's K1 1,000m. Only the winner advanced automatically to the final with all of the other boats now going into a semi-final (effectively a repechage) for the remaining spots in the final. He needs to finish in the top 3 in his semi-final in order to make the final.
Also competing in Poznan this morning was Jenny Egan in the women's K1 500m. She placed 5th in her heat and missed out on the top 3 needed to ensure an automatic place in the final, so like Neil she must compete in a semi-final repechage where a top 3 placing will be needed to make the final.
In the men's K2 200m the Irish duo of Sean Marchetti and Val Pierce finished last in their heat but as all boats at least qualify for the semi-finals they will have another outing.
Good to see so many Irish boats represented in Poznan.

At the Women's Laser World Sailing Championships in Boltenhagen, Ireland's Annalise Murphy made the best possible recovery from a disatrous start to her campaign by clinching a 1st and a 2nd in races 3 and 4. After a 65 and a 33 from yesterday's two races Annalise is really up against it to challenge for the top positions. Her inconsistency is a real worry as apart from a couple of bad races each event, she is arguably as good as any other sailor in her class. She moves up to 27th place overall but will be looking for another strong day on the German waters tomorrow.
Annalise has already booked her place at the London Olympics but will be looking to lay down a marker to her rivals at these championships.

Jenny Egan races at 9.22 (8.22 here I think ) tomorrow morning. As the slowest final qualifier, shes in lane 9, but with the windy conditions, depending on wind direction this could actually be an advantage! The competition in this class, is crazy, it's a huge achievement getting this far, but she'll need to pull off the race of her life tomorrow to finish top 2. Best of luck to her.

Andrzej Jezierski races at 16.05 (15.05 here), and as he is fastest qualifier he won't have to race a semi final tomorrow, which should be another advantage. Its looking good for him at the moment!

Jenny Egan has her 200m semi final at 12.45 (11.45 here), she has a good chance of qualifying for the final, but the 500m is her better event. Shame there's no 1000m or she'd be an Olympic medal prospect!

Just editing this list to update the fact that Ireland has it's 50th qualifier for the London Olympics. Andrzej Jezierski in the C1 200m sprint canoeing has booked his place by finishing in the top 2 qualifying positions at the Final Olympic qualifying tournament in Poznan. Andrzej has been living in Cork for a number of years and his Olympic preparations have been based there.

Since I last updated this list (less than a week ago) the Irish team expanded to 49 members as 3 more athletes booked their places at the London Olympics.
Dublin sailors Ger Owens and Scott Flanigan qualified in the men's 470 class. London 2012 will be a third consecutive Olympics for Owens whereas young Scott Flanigan will head to his maiden Olympics at the tender age of 19. He is the second youngest member of the Irish team this time around after Grainne Murphy, who will also be 19 when she competes in London.
The news that we've all been waiting for came through this morning when Bray boxer Katie Taylor guaranteed her place at the Olympics by advancing to the World Championships semi-finals in China. She becomes Wicklow's third team member.

So far the team is made up of 28 men and 18 women and 5 unknown equestrian riders. The number of women qualifiers however will be reduced by one when Athletics Ireland choose their marathon team.
Qualifiers by province: Leinster (20), Ulster (12), Munster (4), Connacht (3).
Kieran Behan (gymnastics qualifier) although born in London, England has Irish parents: mother is from Monaghan and father from Dublin.
Tori Pena was born in California but competes for Finn Valley A.C. in Donegal and her grandmother was born in Derry.
Maria McCambridge has been living in Donegal for the last few years and competes for Letterkenny A.C. She is married to Letterkenny runner Gary Crossan and she is now living in Donegal with her family. Caitriona Jennings rather ironically hails from Letterkenny but runs for Rathfarnam A.C. in Dublin.
Olive Loughnane was born in Cork and indeed currently lives in Cork so she has strong connections to that county. Neverthless she grew up in Galway and is a product of Carrabane A.C. in Loughrea, Galway so I think in this case it may be fairer to include her in that county's total.
So far, just as many Corkmen as Dublin men have qualified (3 a-piece).
9 qualifiers were born in Northern Ireland (6 men and 3 women).
Lisa Kearney will be Ireland's first ever female judoka to take part in the Olympic Games.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Murphy is the most common surname, with 3 Murphys on the team.
Trap shooter Derek Burnett is the oldest member of the Irish Olympic team at 41 years of age. Maria McCambridge is the oldest women on the team, she will be 37 when the Olympic Opening Ceremony takes place and the youngest being Grainne Murphy who is just 19. Flyweight boxer Michael Conlan is the youngest male on the team at just 20 years of age.
The average age of our women when the Olympics get underway is 28.4yrs for women and 28.7yrs for the men. Overall the average is 28.6yrs for our Olympians.
26 of the qualifiers will be first-time Olympians in London; 9 qualifiers are returning for a second time with 8 of these 9 having previously competed in Beijing in 2008 and Maria McCambridge returning after having competed in Athens 2004; 4 qualifiers (Derval O'Rourke, Alistair Cragg, Eoin Rheinisch and Ger Owens) will be appearing in their 3rd consecutive Olympic Games; and a total of 4 Olympic veterans will be returning to the Olympic stage to make a 4th appearance, namely Robert Heffernan, Olive Loughnane and Derek Burnett who will travel to their 4th consecutive Olympics and David Burrows, who made his Olympic debut way back in Atlanta in 1996 (missed out on Beijing).

Just to be clear, he was world champion as part of a four man group. He did win solo medals, but just wanted to point it out.

The article posted earlier mentions he has been living and working here for years. Preesumably there wasn't much money in canoeing so he thought he'd sort his family out

Annalise Muprhy wins another race at the Laser Radial Sailing World Championships in Boltenhagen. She finished 2nd in race number 6 also, really impressive racing by the young Irish woman. She continues to climb the leaderboard and is now up to 15th place overall and her scorecard now after 6 races reads (65), 33, 1, 2, 1, 2.
These latest results underline how dominant she can be in her fleet. She is such an exciting prospect for London 2012, just needs to get rid of that odd really bad race that she tends to have, otherwise she is a medal contender, no doubt about it.

Andrzej Jezierski qualifies for London 2012 Olympics in the men's C1 200m canoe sprint. Ireland has it's 50th qualifier! He finished second in the final behind the Slovakian paddler. Well done Andrzej, excellent news.

There is no real way of telling that at moment TBH

I assume hes racing in the World cup there this weekend so that will be a good indicator of standard against the athletes already qualified.

He probably had one of the worst starts in that race and stormed through so it looks good for sure

His start was awful all right,90% of the time you have a bad start in a 200m race and thats it, race over, couldn't believe he came back from that!

He is entered to race in the World Cup this weekend, racing starts tomorrow, but C1 not til Saturday. Heats and semi finals for C1 saturday afternoon, Final on Sunday morning. Its marked as being TV broadcast, doesn't say where, but they're usually on eurosport.

Great stuff from Taylor again this morning. Does a world championship final qualification guarantee her seeded status at the Olympics? Or will it be an open draw? She may only need to win one fight in London to medal and, while we'll all be hoping she can win it out, it would be great to be in that position going into London given how scarce Irish medals of any colour have been down the years.

On the boxing forum, a journalist there said that in all boxing weights (male/female), the top 2 would be seeded

Chris Bryan just came 3rd in the European Cup in Israel, Open Water Swimming.
Next up is the Olympic qualifier on 10th of June in Portugal. He needs to finish in the top 10 to qualify for the Olympics

Apparently its top 9 if GB don't qualify a swimmer.
