I'm going to be hoping for reasonable pricing on the food in there. One of the killers in Storm and Omniplex is the price of their popcorn, sweets and drinks.

Yeah its expensive but that's how they make there money, the profit on ticket sales in really small.

Just wanted to make a point with regards to the whole city centre cinema idea.

People on this forum seem to think that having a cinema in the city centre is going to solve all the problems that the city is facing, I couldn't see it having a significant impact and here's why.

First of all, most cinemas in this country are losing money and are struggling to keep their doors open. The film industry is moving away from the traditional theatre medium to an online medium. Netflix have just established themselves in Ireland and going by their achievements in other countries, it wont be long until it becomes a success here. The majority of people use the internet to download movies nowadays and thats the reality, as much as the tv and radio campaigns commend you for going to the cinema, and that "you are are saving the film industry in Ireland".

Secondly, I can't see how a city centre cinema would be successful in Limerick at this present time. If you are a parent bringing your children to the cinema, would you rather struggle to find parking, potentially have your day out be ruined by the weather, and have to carefully guide your children through dangerous traffic and junctions OR would you park for free in any of the conviently located cinemas around the city which also have easy to access adjacent services.

Now, don't get me wrong, nothing would please me more than seeing a thriving city centre in Limerick. However, the infrastructure needs to be put in place before the services are provided for. This city NEEDS efficient public transport from the suburbs to the city centre, the quicker the city centre becomes more appealing to live (functionally and asthetically), the better. Pedestrianisation and the full roll out of the city's orbital route need to happen as soon as possible in conjunction with the delivery of a reasonable public transport system.

Putting a cinema in the city centre at this time, would be equivalent to throwing money down a hole, I just cannot see it being a success at this moment in time.

This city, has a massive opportunity at this time, to completely change the way in which it functions and operates in time for when this recession we are in finally bites the dust.

Having a cinema in the town was a great success at one stage, I know my grandfather used to travel in the country roads during the late 40's and early 50's to watch Kirk Douglas and Gene Autry movies at the Savoy, of course this was before traffic congestion, the decline in quality of Hollywood film, and before being intimidatingly bombarded with requests for money whilst walking through the town became commonplace.

Anyway, who wants to go through all the hassle of parking and dodging the junkies in the town just to watch rubbish like The Muppets or the latest enthralling offering from George Clooney? This is why people would rather go out and get drunk, there's nothing to watch and nothing to do, and if you do go to the cinema, sitting through a two hour George Clooney snorefest is enough to drive you to the drink (I'm not picking on George Clooney, I feel this way about the majority of current Hollywood stars, although it's the scriptwriters I should be blaming.)

Now, if they decided to have a classic Hollywood marathon in one of these cinemas (as they should be doing), well I'd pay good money to see that. I would LOVE to see Hitchcock or Fritz Lang films on the big screen since I wasn't lucky enough to do so the first time around. Why don't they do that? They do it in American cinemas, I thought we were in awe of America? Also, if they insisted upon opening a cinema in the city centre, why not make it a drive-in cinema? Make it really retro. Why not think outside the box? Give people something to look forward to, and something different to do for a change. That would solve the parking issue, you wouldn't even have to leave the car, have vendors going from car to car offering popcorn and drinks, BUT NO, let's stick to our rigid guidelines, force you to watch The Hurt Locker, and put minimal thought and effort into the planning and layout.

Then they'll wonder why nobody'll show up. It doesn't take a rocket scientist (only Quirk Douglas) to figure out that people are jaded from the mundanity of 21st century life. It's time to jazz the town up a bit and make it worth going to again.

Give me my drive-in cinema with classic Hollywood marathons!

Campo thinks that Quirk Douglas is a little bit eh Quirky but having said that Campo does agree with the point of loving to see old Hollywood classic from the likes of Hitchock being shown on the big screen it might just be a runner.

Hey guys, did this cinema ever advertise jobs for the limerick cinema?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,859 ✭✭✭Poxyshamrock

Yeah, it advertised in mid February. Apparently about 500 applied for 50 jobs.

yeah on their facebook page, I worked in the omniplex once, horrible job, people are animals when it comes to food and cinemas, once you've picked up a few dozen stale nacho cheese containers a night it puts you off working in a cinema for life

I see in Dublin cineworld do an unlimited card. It's €19.99 a month and you get unlimited entry to the movies.

Something along those lines would be great.

  • Registered Users Posts: 115 ✭✭Voy

That is pretty decent alright. Would probably depend on the selection though. Might only be two good movies around in a month so wouldn't be much of a saving over just buying the ticket.

Could also end up having to justify buying it to yourself and watching Adam Sandler play himself and his twin sister.

Think thats were they'd make their money. Where it would work for the customer would most likely be during the likes of the summer when a lot of blockbusters would come out and you might have 4 or 5 good films out in a month.

I suppose if you are a big into going to movies and willing to try all kinds of movies it is a great deal.

Don't many of the "unlimited" schemes come with T&C that include certain times?

Don't know to be honest but I'd say your right.

They had a special screening of John carter in 3d last night for people who rang and won a competition. From the people's responses on Facebook they where very happy with it and said the seats where comfortable with lots of leg room. I'd say they showed it in the VIP screen though.

I'm just going by how the unlimited cards work in many of the cinemas that do them in the UK. Might be different in Ireland.

Went there tonight. The good - friendly staff and even though we were in screen 7 it was a decent size screen (some of the screens in the omniplex are tiny).

The Bad: Seats are very 'upright' with short base cushions. You can lean back on them but the snap back up very abruptly. Not very comfortable to be honest.

Don't know if all the seats are like that - what do other baordsie's think?

can't see myself goin here over omniplex when they have €4 offer on O2 treats!! Seats sounds dodgy too, being very tall I hate the recliners in Storm, when someone reclines in front of ya yer ****ed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,533 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I thought the seats were OK for about an hour, but then I was squirming to get comfortable. I think the part you sit on a few inches shorter than it should be.

I went to see 21 Jump Street and the screen was cropped at the top and bottom. Hopefully just a teething issue.

Good value though, and the place is spotless (for now!)

Out of the 3 cinemas in Limerick, this is the furthest away from me and least accessible (I have to go through town, up by King John's Castle, or pay a toll on the tunnel), so I don't know if I'll be a regular.

I live near the omniplex so it makes more sense (and its cheaper) to go there but I'll probably go see something in showtime tonight, while it has that new cinema smell :pac: is it fully finished inside or are they still decorating and the like? anyone find the pic and sound quality better than storm (wouldnt be hard) or the omniplex?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,533 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Still has that new cinema smell, that's for sure. The place is 100% complete as far as I can see, and the sound quality is the best of the 3 cinemas.

    Went there tonight.

Paid 7e for a student ticket.

Sound and picture were both superb, much better than Storm or the Omniplex. Definetly best cinema in town in terms of quality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

going later, hope they keep the standards up, Storm was brilliant when it first opened and took a nosedive in the past few years, omniplex were crap then upped their game a lot once the 3D and digital projectors came in.

It did stop for a few days, but started again once they organised a policy of actually checking the codes...

Last time I was in Storm there were only 2 of us in the whole theatre, time before that there were 6! Someone sitting in front of you isn't a prob anymore:p

Went there last night, was impressed by the place, seats are pretty comfortable. Hope it takes off and does well, there was only 4 of us in the 18:20 john Carter showing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,096 ✭✭✭Jofspring

Was at the cinema myself last night. About 50 of us in at the 8:45 showing of Contraband.

There was an issue for the first few trailers with the cropping as mentioned before but didn't see any issue after that. The picture quality was very clear and the sound was good too. The seats where comfortable with plenty of leg room which was great as my knees used to be killing me by the end of a movie in storm.

Food is expense as is to be expected I suppose but all and all it was an enjoyable experience. The cinema as a whole is not that big but thats fine by me.

Tell that to my friend who went to see Hunger Games at 8 last night and left at 8:45 because they couldn't get the projector to work/fix it. The amount of films the pair of us have gone to that have been faulty like that in Storm is unreal.

Going to this new cinema Sunday so looking forward to seeing how that is.

Something like this happened at the new Show Time cinema today, my friend went there at 3pm and after 15mins they could not get the film to play (why I don't know) but they did ring her and tell her that the 6pm showing would be working fine and it was.

I was there on Friday, the projectors weren't working came back five minutes later and it was grand. The local youth however arn't the best though, was seeing 21 Jump Street and they wouldn't stop jumping and screaming and running around. However beyond that enjoyable experience. Small cropping issue but I didn't notice it that much and the sound and visual are very good.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,463 ✭✭✭marienbad

We went to 6 pm showing of Hunger Games . Thought it was excellent.

Widest screen I have seen in a while so we had to sit right at the back or it was disconcerting to watch- or maybe it was just me.

A bit of cropping on the adds - but who cares , if it was during the film we did'nt notice.

Great seats, very comfy and a great asset for all of us on the west side

Been there twice now, went to see The Muppets with my girlfriend, 2 brothers and sister for kids club on Saturday, 5 tickets for €20 inc. booking fee. I thought it was very reasonable. Food was great too, 13.50 or something like that for 2 Regular drinks, a large popcorn and a bag of sweets. For 5 of us to go cinema with food it was around €50 so I was happy out! Went back Sunday for 21 Jump Street and it was great, on in screen 1, very big screen, maybe a lil too big but great sound and video quality. I do hope that they get an Unlimited card as I would go more than once a week! They'd make their money off of me eating :D
