In fairness, the only place I've seen any mention of this 'rumour' of him going to Munster is on boards.ie. It was never remotely plausible.

as far as I can tell it was started by a munster supporter trolling on leinsterfans and it spread to here

Cathal Sheridan, your time is now!

Best of luck to Stringer. Sheridan will replace him in the HEC squad now.

If we've seen the last of Peter Stringer in a red jersey then I am very upset. He's as big a Munster legend as POC, Quinlan, Hayes or ROG. He deserves a proper Munster sendoff in Limerick. However it very much looks like we've seen the last of Strings. *sob*

Hopefully he'll earn long term deal with Bath, his injury record is clean (open to correction!) so he could probably play another season or two if he wanted.

To qualify for the tax break he needs to finish his career playing in Ireland - I would imagine the loan thing is a way around it (he's still employed by Munster) but it will be interesting to see what happens next.

Bit of a strange interview here with Penney
    http://thescore.thejournal.ie/munster-heineken-cup-oconnell-zebo-fitness-837420-Mar2013/

“He’s making progress,” Penney said as the focus turned to the team’s 7 April Heineken Cup clash with Harlequins. The coach added:
There’s a big, grey area coming up between the week before the quarter-final and the week after. We’ve got some specialist visits to have and all sorts. We’re optimistic but not overly optimistic.
“We’ll just see. It’s highly unlikely that he’ll be available for that game.”

They're optimistic but it's highly unlikely he'll be available?!

    I read it as:
"Dear Munster fans, he's back, woohoo"
    and
"Dear Quins, not a hope he'll play, don't plan for us having him available"

I believe the way the loan works is that he can be called back whenever they want him and while he's with Bath both clubs pay his wages between them, so as he'll still be getting something from Munster the Irish tax still counts, I assume his past few salaries wouldn't be in his top 10 for yearly salaries so he'll be fine anyway.

What's this about Danny Barnes? See the last two paragraphs. I never heard a peep about this but maybe the case was in camera?

(maybe this isn't the place for speculation...)

It was in the paper last week, very strange case, I'm absolutely stunned that it's on the Munster website. Google "danny barnes wexford" and have a read but probably not appropriate for the rugby forum.

I'd buy your tickets now, this is the biggest game in Musgrave since the redevelopment of Thomond, no one is really going to be sure how soon it will sell out.

Yeah I just looked up a few articles.

Strange by Munster Rugby to issue a statement on it, then again they were themselves accused of negligence.

My comment was in relation to Thomond's hope that Stringer gets a contract with Bath. Strings definitely has a few years in him, injury permitting, but is there a place for him to play on professionally in Ireland, which is what he needs to qualify for the tax break, unless a deal with a foreign club was more lucrative than the tax rebate?

Regardless, the details of the case have not been made public, and regardless if they are or not SPECULATION is ground for libel.

Had the breakfast today with ROG, DOC and Zebo... ( well they sat at my table :P )

Anyhow got my tickets today for the game Saturday, North Terrace only though, was rather puzzled to hear the whole of the east terrace is for the supporters club ( that's what was said in the Munster Shop in Cork )... This is my 4th game in Musgrave this year and first time I've heard of it. Was standing there for the Scarlets game in Novemeber and got soaked :P

Looking forward to a big performance from Munster.. Glad to see O'Connell back... Would like to see Sheridan and Keatley get a chance together. Was in Thomond for the Ospreys game and felt Sheridan played very well for his first start, William's came on with 20 mins to go and was mile's behind the game, so heres hoping for Cathal!

I think the decision to let Stringer stay in Bath could mean Sheridan has convinced the management that he's good enough.

In fairness, it shouldn't take much to convince the coaches that he's better than Williams.

Any word on a contract extension for Stringer? Could this be his last season with Munster?

Not sure on full contracts but hearing Rory Parata and Greg o Shea could be in the academy next season.

Saw this on twitter that Munster are trying to sell some land at Musgrave to help fund the redevelopment of the ground. Will be interesting if they actually do get to sell it

but that includes a development of temporary stands. This would be permanent.

Ah gotcha. Wonder would it lead to more Rabos being played in Cork? Probably not yeah?

I doubt to be honest. Anyway Munster are locked in to a certain number of games in thomond for the next while by the 10 year season tickets they sold during redevelopment so I doubt Cork can get many extra games.

Poor Stander has had such a tough season of rugby that they're letting him rest through the H Cup obviously!

Munster could only add 3 players - with Earls out Munster needed a centre. And with Strings in Bath, needed another scrumhalf. Third position has to go to front row.

Stander wasn't needed as Munster have loads of backrows and Tommy O'Donnell has been a revelation this year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,301 ✭✭✭✭jm08

Coughlan was delisted when he got injured, but got fit quicker than expected so had to be relisted and so took a possible spot in January.

Think its just a lot of young guys all competing for a few places and Stander arrived late in the day and then got injured.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,420 ✭✭✭✭athtrasna

The other note from the additions is that Bath have added Strings to their Amlin Squad. Good for him but bloody frustrating to think we played Williams over him for a lot of the season.

And how do you think Stander feels about this?

The last thing they want is him getting fed up and becoming a Sykes.

Very strange re Stander. Don't buy that he just didn't make the squad because we needed a centre etc. Must be some story behing this.

Well Munster did need an outside back with our injury issues (LOD, Zebo, Earls) and Sheridan is in because he's ahead of Williams in the pecking order now. Cronin comes in because you can add an extra prop, so Munster may as well add someone.

Is this a bad sign for Stander? It's hard to say, since I would prioritise getting in Dineen and Sheridan over Stander. Munster are healthy in terms of available backrows.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,301 ✭✭✭✭jm08

He probably feels that he will have to work harder to get into the first team. I've heard Penney say that he has a few things to work on anyway.

I think he will stick it - Limerick will suit him as his wife to be is a swimmer and she seems to have got a place training with the Ireland High Performance team who are based in Limerick.

Are we looking at Archer being first-choice TH now?

Botha got 20 minutes from the bench against the Ospreys three weeks ago and 20 minutes against Treviso the week before that. TBH I attributed that to requests from the national set-up to give Archer game-time, but now Botha is on the bench again. Certainly looks like Penney is giving Archer every chance to nail down the jersey, which makes it strange that Munster have (allegedly) gone to great lengths to keep Botha for next year.

Any thoughts from someone who might be more clued in than me?

I think we are looking at Munster not being able to keep Botha for next season and Munster realising that Archer will be first choice next season and giving him every minute (particularly in the Rabo where Munster are effectively out of) of gametime to get experience to help him next season.

Fair enough so, I thought Botha was staying next year, WDP being shoved out the door to placate IRFU etc etc. But if BJ is gone, then yes, give Archer as much game time as possible

BJ wants a two year contract. IRFU will only allow a one year one.

Starting Archer & Kilcoyne is more like showing to the IRFU that BJ & Wian are not blocking their progress.

Munster do need BJ & Wian as all the props behind Archer & Killer are very young and inexperienced and Horan is likely to retire this year.

offer may have been made but WDP wanted compensation which is fair enough as he has a contract. It looks like BJ is going so Archer is getting the experience.

So seeing as Stander isnt in the HEC cup squad then why isnt he involved this weekend, surely next weekend will be reserved for getting the HEC guys up to speed so chances are his next appearance might not be until the Leinster game on the 13th of April. By which point it will be almost 2 months since his last senior appearance which was off the bench against Treviso on the 24th February.

This might have been discussed before but is anyone else dissapointed with Howlett this year? He has done fine as captain but in terms of being a attacking force he has been poor, I think he has put on too much upper body weight and it has dented his speed a lot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,207 ✭✭✭durkadurka

He's very old for a winger. The pace seems to have disappeared .
