Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Not a chance. I'd say best bet of seeing NHL in Ireland is Belfast. They'd never come somewhere with no room for spectators.

Theres plans to get games in there eventually. The far wall in the video is going to have tiered seating, which is currently in pieces in another room!

Its not NHL sized, its a couple of meters short width wise (about a board) and 2 or so boards in length, but it wont be very noticeable when you're on the ice. It will still make for a great game of hockey. It would be like coming from international ice to NHL, only not as big a difference.

<edit>tbh, the video actually makes it look bigger</edit>

They are calling the rink the national ice sports development center so I would think so but not sure if they are

If you can not skate they run lessons in Castleknock on Ice and then the team you join will teach you hockey through drills and training

Yeah according to IIHA they will be doing Learn To Play programmes so yeah they will.

And I'm pretty sure its gonna be called "National Ice Sports & Training Arena"

The disappointing aspect of those pictures is the lack of a spectating area but thats about the only thing I can see wrong with it. Its hard to build a sport without a spot for the fans. Do they have a Zamboni for the rink? Ive been playing up at Castleknock on ice for a few weeks now. Its not bad, rink is small but any ice is good ice at this stage. I hope it stays open if both rinks are up and running. Ive been chatting about the Santry rink to lads playing up there and its all just rumors as to when it will open. Some were saying it was meant to be open last week but there was an issue with ice laying. We are all waiting for it to open.

I'd imagine a Zamboni would be way over-budget for a place like Santry.

There is about 10 meters of space which isnt in that pic to the right and there are benches in storage which havnt been assembled yet. They will go the length of the rink and will also be at the foot of the rink. It would be about 5 tiers high all around. More than enough for a growing sport. There are offices lining the entire wall the length of the place to which a viewing could be put in - like an executive box space in a proper stadium.

No point in jumping to conclusions and saying its disappointing when you've never seen the place. This is being done out of yer mans pockets, theres no point in getting all this stuff if there is no ice down. So lets wait for that to happen first. I'd much rather a good slab of ice to benches for people to sit on while they look at the grid of pipes. Remember, they need ice to make money.

Theres only a handful of lads working on the project, all these rumors your hearing are just that, rumors. The the first problem was getting the equipment in. That pic of the rink was taken before they even had chillers. Then they had to find people who know what they are doing to assemble it. They had to free up time to come over, then they have to build it, then test it. If a pipe has a leak its much easier to fix when there is no ice down. They can take another 6 months for all i care. If its done right we will have a good rink, and they are trying to do just that, there are no risks being taken with this project.

Point taken but relax mate. Im just going by the pictures. Its hard to see what the gap distance is in them. Ive been in rinks where its a 4 foot gap to the wall and no space to have seats. Im glad there are plans. Thanks for the info

I read the rest of the thread there. Im willing to lend a hand on cleaning boards or whatever is needed. Who should I contact?

Soz, i came across as being a dick there, it was unintentional! There is space for people and its been a key point in having the rink! I'm not gonna say who to talk to because Im not sure what the situation is right now!

" All good things come to those who wait "

Following reports by the IIHA in recent months of a brand new ice and inline hockey facility to be opened in Santry, Dublin, we would like to provide everyone with an update on the project.

Since the closure of the Dundalk Ice Dome the availability of ice hockey in Ireland has been limited to facilities in Northern Ireland, Seasonal Ice Rinks throughout Ireland and the ice skating facility at Castleknock, Dublin. Concurrently, there has been substantial work done with various teams participating in Inline hockey in locations such as Dublin, Drogheda, Dundalk, Kilkenny and Cork to name a few.

The IIHA conducted open Pick-Up Ice Hockey sessions regularly in both the Odyssey Arena and Dundonald Ice Rink in Belfast where the support provided to the IIHA by the management and staff of those facilities has been outstanding and greatly appreciated.

Recently a permanent ice rink has been under construction in the National Ice Sports Arena, Santry, Dublin. It will provide the Capital City, Dublin, and Ireland as a whole with an ice surface large enough to cater for ice hockey leagues.

The IIHA’s Director of Player Operations, Will Fitzgerald, visited the National Ice Sports Arena to see how things are progressing as it reaches its final preparations. Prior to his visit some individuals were invited to view the facility for the first time, including representatives from the Dublin Ducks and Celtic Clovers who currently train and conduct Learn to Play sessions at Castleknock on Ice in Dublin.

On entering the facility the first thing that hits you about the rink is that its cold, but in a nice way, Hockey Cold. The rink is being finalised by a number of engineers who have been flown in to complete the work and a number of dedicated individuals who have been working tirelessly for a number of months now. These individuals are not in it for the money, more for the love of the sport and hunger for ice and are putting in many hours of hard labour in order to bring the rink to the point where it opens and ice hockey and figure skating can commence.

The IIHA and the Ice Skating Association of Ireland (ISAI) have been consulting with the operators of the facility, for a number of weeks about the scheduling of ice times and programmes to be conducted there. The National Governing Bodies (IIHA and ISAI) are collaborating closely in order to ensure that each of the sports get the best possible use of the ice to both bodies satisfaction.

A number of weeks ago team representatives were invited to the rink and the IIHA is delighted to add another couple of clubs to that list which is related to notifying the Irish ice hockey community about all matters related to the sport, so welcome Ducks and Clovers.

So how long before the rink opens? Well, considering that final checks and tests are being conducted on the plant, connections and a lot more bits and technical pieces than the author is aware of, it is close, very close to opening to ice hockey and figure skating. Management have informed the IIHA that they hope to flood the rink in the coming days.

Will Fitzgerald said ‘So much progress has been done in these last few months and that is testament to the financial commitment, hard work, long days and nights of those who are involved in the development of the National Ice Sports Arena’.

So, keep a close eye on IIHA.org, IIHA Facebook & Twitter pages / national media for more information about the imminent opening of what will truly be a fantastic ice arena.

    http://www.iiha.org/news/663/santry-ice-rink-official-update

An imminent opening in Santry, great news!
