Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It's no The Legend of Dragoon, that's for sure...

I hope to god you are just trying to rile me up because if not then that statement is full of even more fail than the sentences that proceded it.

Man, A&R is the easiest place to troll, it's almost too easy!

But seriously, just not getting properly into Chrono Trigger, despite the fact I'm over halfway through.

And I just mentioned LoD to bring out a reaction in Retr0. But I do like that game. There, I said it!

Just got my Wii back from Nintendo after fixing the dual-layer problem and I'm currently enjoying playing through Metroid Prime again on trilogy.
    Lovin it!:D

So you like Legend of Dragoon and don't like Chrono Trigger. Remind me never to take recommendations off you :P

It's not that I don't like Chrono Trigger, it's just I don't like it as much as all the hype suggests I should like it!

How can you not like it (as much as the hype suggests), it has the greatest character ever - Frog!

I love Frog! One of the most likeable Squaresoft characters ever. How they progressed from that to Vanille I'll never know.

Not exactly retro but I'm playing phantom hour glass on the ds. I want to like it...but I don't think it's a patch on previous efforts. Think I'll have to power up my gameboy to play Link's Awakening again.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,827 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

You're not the only one, I was severely disappointed in Phantom Hourglass. If just felt all wrong and was way too easy.

I thought it was fantastic. Easy, yes, but still great. I'd much rather control Link with a stylus then a Wiimote and nunchuck.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,827 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Thought the Wiimote and nunchuk worked great and didn't give me hand cramps.

Serious? I find the nunchuck fine, but pointing the Wiimote at the screen for extended periods of time is incredibly uncomfortable.

Well I don't find pointing at the screen too much. I just rest my hand on my legs and it's just small motions, nothing tiring at all. In twilight princess you hardly have to point at the screen anyway.

Hmmm, I've got Final Fantasy 9 and 10 here, wondering which one to play... I loved 6 and 7, found the junctioning system of 8 a little too confusing. Which should I go for?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,827 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Start with 9. It's the best since FF6 for me.

Indeed, go with IX. X is a load of balls. And I'm not talking about the ones Wakka throws.

Been playing Doom 3 on my laptop. Played through the game on the Xbox already but it's a better experience on the PC. I have an excellent set of Microsoft LifeChat headphones - I cannot play the game in the dark. The atmosphere is really unsettling. I wish my gfx card was better, it's only 64mb but does a decent job.

Started playing Alan Wake the other night. Seems interesting, but after about three hours the fighting has me bored already. Same characters over and over. Then when a situation arises where a substantial character could be an interesting fight..they just turn into the same generic bad guy. Boring.

Anyway, Something seemed very familiar about the style of it. Then I realized - Max Payne!

So I googled Alan Wake to see if anyone else thought it was a bit of a Max Payne rip off (minus the fun gunplay) and it turns out it's made by the same people. I did not know that.

Played a bit of Disneys Epic Mickey and its not half bad, my 7 year old is really enjoying it and while, yes, it does feel like a 3D platformer from 3 years ago, it is very impressive none the less, the depth of detail is great and if you happen to be of an age to appreciate Disney history and memorabilia then this is for you.
And it's as cheap as chips at the mo.

Currys/Pc World in Airside, Swords still have two copies of Sin And Punishment 2 for 20 each, also Singularity for the 360 for a tenner.
I picked up Beatles Rock Band for a fiver, thats the game only before you get too excited.
I was looking at Pokemon HeartGold for my boy, it was only 19.99, but it didn't come with the Pokewalker, as far as I know it is standard but the daft twat behind the counter insisted I was thinking of some "special edition".
What a muppet, looks like games shops don't have a monopoly on ill informed, heck, downright wrong, staff.

Playing Vice City at the moment ... so happy that the PS3 I have is backwards compatible. I should really try to finish off Shadow of the Colossus come to think of it. Also bought Resident Evil 4 off a guy on adverts the other week as well, so a lot of PS2 stuff to keep me busy.

Might try out Loaded (for the PS1) on it over the weekend, see if that works and if it is as difficult as I recall..

Had a crack at Final Fight CD again tonight, it's not that easy - atleast for me. Going to have to put the practice in on this one.

Playing link to the past in preparation for the gameathon next week.

I haven't played it in years. The strange thing is, I will go into a dungeon and have no idea where to go, yet almost every choice I make is the correct one!

Picked up a SNES with Super Mario World and Syndicate during the week, so have been playing both. Used to play Syndicate Wars on PS1 (which I thought was excellent!), so I picked up the SNES prequel. Quite good I must say, they crammed a lot onto the cart, although there are some slightly annoying aspects to it too.

Goddammit I was in there on Wednesday evening and didn't see that there. I popped in again this morning but no joy either. A little pissed off I then went into Harvey Norman's a few doors down.

All I walked away with was a sealed Zelda: Spirit Tracks for 6euro... not a bad start to the day :D

If it is ill be buying a copy come release day, only downside is they will probabaly bundle the gamecube version of mgs1 (lot of complaints about shooting in first person making the game too each and also some dialog changed and the mgs2 cast used to record all the dialog opposed to the original cast)

Just finished Zelda Oracle of ages

Getting into Oracle of seasons now :D

After that all i have to beat are The minish cap and Spirit tracks for the full Set

Nope I said HG101 had an article up about them (a damn good one with original developer interviews and everything) talking about how they are decent games and unfairly ridiculed. Can't say I played them myself.

at the very least the music was quite good in them.

If you've seen the AVGN review of them, this is played throughout his video. Memorable :)

Picked a GC a short while back (was only after OEM GC pads for Wii MKart, but hey!), so now making progress with Super Smash Bros. Melee and Star Wars Rebel Strike ...and now I can feel the retrogaming demon sneaking menacingly closer and closer again, as I find myself lurking AES and PC-Es on fleabay with alarming regularity.

    I blame this

Hey man! how you doing these days? Haven't seen you about these parts in a very long time.

I lurk a fair bit every now and then, just don't get time to post much at all I'm afraid :)

I'm in regular touch with Lemming since he only lives a figurative stone's throw away these days (would you believe!), but same story there, I just don't get time for airsoft, much as I'd like to. Must be the second time I've had to cancel an outing with him at the 11th hour, always due to work matters :o :pac:

Whatever gaming I manage to do these days is 90% of the time with my daughter (6), usually Nintendo fayre (Wii/GC/DSI XL) although we completed Halo 3 and Reach on Legendary in coop over Xmas, and we are now making our way through Halo 3 again on Heroic in coop  ...don't fancy your chances much, when she eventually graduates to flying FPSes solo, she's already asked me about C:S Source she's seen me play with bots, and she manages BF2 SP with 64 bots on her own just fine :D

Ah yes, children - the ultimate excuse.

Well, Mrs doesn't approve of course (although naturally I turn off any blood/swearing/etc. as much as settings allow, and there's a reason why I won't let her play online at all ;)). But then that buys the Mrs coffee-supping/feet-up/Facebook time, so it's really a case of "can't have your cake and eating it" I'm afraid :D

She's reading really well by now, so there's a full collection of EDGE she can start making her way through very soon ;)

    Not to mention RPGs! :D

Could do a play through of something like Chrono Trigger. Would almost be like reading a book together. I wish I'd played that when I was a young lad. Would have loved it.

As for the topic at hand, got another hour of Steel Batalion in last night. Absolutely loving it. It so punishing, but the moment my mech is destroyed I just power up another one and go again. Only managed to get up to level 4 so far...you really have to have the damn escape button on the ready too! If you die once that's it, all the way back to the start. Feckin' evil so it is!

Had a whirl of Aladdin last night. I thought my Megadrive had mysteriously disappeared during a spring cleaning a year or two ago, but managed to find it tucked away in the back of my wardrobe in a tesco bag :) Superb game though, filled me with nostalgia - never owned it, but rented it a few times as a lad. The soundtrack kicks all sort of ass, awesome chiptune renditions of the film score.

Also picked up a copy of Golden Axe II in RAGE today for a fiver. Only ever played the first so looking forward to giving it a whirl later.

Was playing CorsixTH, an open source port of Theme Hospital. Unfortunately too glitchy at this early stage of development to play for very long, but it gave me a taste of the game again. And a fresh hatred of doctors.

Spent an hour on the Ikea Cab, brilliant!
Played a game called Space Bomber by Psikyo, very odd!
Also a Macross vertically scrolling shooter that was awesome, no sound though, may have to upgrade the version of MAME til its finally working properly!
