Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Depends on the make and model I suppose.
problem is - there is no 530i out there. i prefer e60 over e39 too.
    .........

    Wasn't there a 530i E60?
Edit, just saw 'tis the rarity is the issue.

there was, but those are damn rare! You know all that craze with dirty diesel etc. :( for 1 530i you get 10 530d. and prices of 530d are even cheaper!

That's a decent point, I was looking at e39 a few weeks back, a 530i or even a 525i are quite expensive in comparison to 530d models.

that is the thing, the whole extra premium for a diesel is out of the window as diesel ones are more common and cheaper. i know for my millage such diesel cars sounds really silly, but i am looking more in to its power with an addition of having good mpg. still, good bit of work needs to be done for these diesel engines. I am getting common sense beaten in to me little by little. I might skip on 530d. unfortunatley 525i 530i are damn rare. if i am willing to do that over 2.0 jump i might as well go 2.5, not 2.2 (520i) as its tiny difference in tax.

this OPc is for sale on donedeal. Wheels look really scuffed though. can anyone explain if that dash is nor mal too? as it went as xmas lights. funny fact about opel astra/corsa OPC - those dont have water tempreture gage...

If he thinks an ST is underpowered compared to the engine, he sure as hell isn't gonna go for that :P

To be honest I wouldnt have much faith in any E60 I'd find for 6k. Early 530i's were average enough, 231bhp at the start, 256 mid-way through life, 276 odd at the end. IS250 suggestion not bad. Focus ST is much better to drive than Astra OPC. But if you don't like them then thats that.
How about a Legacy saloon? A few 3 litre ones might suit.

My vote here is for the 3/6 MPS.
Have you considered an R35 Skyline? Not a GTR now, the coupe withe the engine from a 350Z.

I'm very confused, you loved your R33 and you just said you'd buy an Accord... But you hate Jap cars?

I was toying with z350 idea, but tax is a killer. I just can't :(. 530d was more of exeption as I could get it cheaper, save money on petrol and justify 3.0 tax.

im must be getting old, if i cant see the difference between them. :pac:
same i cant see big difference between mb and bmw, as vw and audi, as cars in same range are very similar, i mean budget st ups, or "all bells and whistles" class. hondas and toyotas are very reliable cars, with own " - " and " + " , i woul;dnt put in same sentence germans and japs, and i always thought japs are reliable cars, germans also are good enough , id say better interior quality. from all cars what i had, id prefer japanese cars.

Big differences between most of those marques. Accord is a league ahead of an Avensis, and an E-class is chalk to a 5 series cheese. VW and Audi are quite similar though!

Be aware too, given the quick glimpse of the brakes in the video, i'm positive they aren't Brembos. Just cheap plastic ebay shiit.

theyre just brembo brakes covers. the 6 pot brakes on the opc are good enough standard ;)

i dont know what to make of the dash OP. looks like it flickered alright but it could be the camera too or something. that car has been for sale for a long time. the corsa opc has been also. i was looking at them about 6 months ago and both those 2 were for sale. id offer loooooow.
there is a normal sri 3 door astra turbo on donedeal for 5k. it has 99k miles though. theyre 170 standard but can be brought up to 200 easily. needs a few upgrades to get the 240 of the opc.

They're an absolutely cracking looking car, it's a pity the front looks very 407-esque compared to the back.

Worth a look anyway, despite the covers (best to remove them for heat dissipation anyway)

You sure the standard brakes are 6 pot? The real Brembos are only 4 pot (perfectly adequate btw)

ShadowHearth, Top of my list mentioned so far would be an opc/vxr or a 3mps.

How about some other hot hatches worth a look- Seat Leon cupra R or mk5 Golf gti or Renaultsport Megane 225 ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,238 ✭✭✭Ardennes1944

the opc i was in had 6 pot although it was a burg. after having a look it seems most are 4 pot actually!

8.9k is way optimistic for it though, unless he is willing to do a cash deal, I won't even bother.

Btw that pug 407 coupe os growing on me. I will check it in more detail at home by pc. It is not the fastest car out there, but looks like it has amazing sound proofing. I among a fan of 407 reliability, but I still will look in to coupe.

Bought one of these last December.. 2.2 Petrol SV model ..Very nice car to Drive and fully kitted out too.. They also come in a 2.7 Diesel and 3.0 petrol (GT Model) . I have had no issues with mine since I got it. The 35mpg quoted in the ad is a bit optimistic (unless you drive under 100km/h in 6th gear.) .. Normal (slightly heavy footed) driving returns around 28mpg so not too bad.
Few things to keep in mind when looking at these cars.. Check the dual Climate control , put both on full heat and cold , walk away if either one (mostly Drivers side) stays at the same temperature and doesn't change. These can be very expensive to fix but if you surf the web there are a few quick fixes if you are mechanically minded. Also watch out for Engine tappety noises, Apart from that these are a pretty good car for the money.

How about a mk1 focus Rs? 240bhp as standard, big brakes and major smiles per buck. I've had 2 and they outshine the imprezas and the Hondas. Rare car too with only 4500 of them made.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 138 ✭✭MagicRon

bmw 530d ( e60 ) as above, but it has quite a twist. i could look past 3.0 tax on it, as i could buy one for 5-6k eu and pay tax for 2-3 years, before i break even with 2.0 in the same time, which will be bought 8k eu. in the end of the day it is diesel engine too, so mpg will be better then anything above, but it will have a good kick too, when i need it. biggest problem - reliability. i know jack shiet about them, how reliable turbos and electronic on these.

    I have a E60 530d. Power is unreal.
    Reliability is crap!

Too much computery gadgetry - too many sensors. There is always 'something' going/wrong in it. I let all the little bits and bobs build up over the last 6 months and spent €3000 last week getting everything sorted.

Add 1300 euro a year to that to tax it and a bit more to insure it.

I love the car, and love driving the car, but I would never buy one again!
