Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I mentioned The Bends in the second sentence of the first post in the thread. :confused:Fitter, Happier is filler IMHO.

    Ok missed your Bends mention.

But Fitter, Happier is NOT filler. It totally fits in with the message of the album and as a piece of music, it's very good.

    It's brilliant, in fact.

Right, firstly the OP asked for recent-ish albums with no filler, to which I suggest
    Two Dancers-Wild Beasts
    Actor-St Vincent
    Alligator, Boxer-The National
    Yankee Hotel Foxtrot-Wilco
    Veckamiest-Grizzly Bear
    xx-The xx
    Sound Of Silver-LCD Soundsystem

Surely the first characteristic of a great album is that you listen to it the whole way through?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 537 ✭✭✭DonnieScribbles

On the subject of Beck, I think Sea Change nearly has to be listened to all the way through.

I've skipped through Sea Change :o
It's excellent, but I find it too dense... It's quite a brooding album. Too much for one through listen, for me anyway.
    kraggy wrote: »

I agree. There's not an ounce of filler on The Bends.

Also, +1 to Actor by St. Vincent, mentioned above. Got it recently and there isn't a track on it that I could think of as filler, really.

The National- Boxer. Brilliant from start to finish...I also find it very hard to finish most albums in it's entirity also !!

Yep, that is a doozy, from a band who were previously (and since) guilty of releasing albums with two or three crackers and a load of old guff.
I agree. There's not an ounce of filler on The Bends.

Fitter, Happier is on OK Computer though.

Is there any correlation between the albums people pick as filler-free and the age/stage of life they were at when they first listened to them? For me I think there definitely is - 1995, 1998 and 2001 stand out for albums I hold dear and those all correspond to major changes in my life. I'm quite sure lots of people would say Felt Mountain was packed with filler, but every track has value for me, probably by association as much as musical brilliance.

I'd only ever heard of LCD soundsystem two days ago, but I'm sorely tempted to buy their album if it's up to the standard of the two tracks I heard.

I'm also going to have to get my hands on High Violet.

St. Vincent? Who dat? I shall investigate forthwith.

Queen is Dead by the Smiths would be another strong contender.

I haven't bought the new album yet but Sounds of Silver is a brilliant album. The depth of it surprised me when I first got it as I'd only really thought of LCD as a moderately entertaining dance act before then.

Well that's certainly going back a bit!

The Stone Roses (21 years old, yikes!) qualifies by dint of Elizabeth My Dear being too short to bother reaching for the 'Next' button :D

I'd be more interested to know if younger listeners these days still have (new release) albums that they love from tip to toe.

Definitely agree with previous posters, PJ - Ten and Nirvana - Nevermind are faultless.

    Could also throw:

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

Recent albums (last year or two) I like every song on and can listen to without skipping a track would be:
    Passion Pit - Manners
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion (This took a while to grow on me but love it now)
    Friendly Fires - Friendly Fires

It's an interesting topic. I wonder do bands themselves think every song on an album is good? Or do they know some are filler but due to deadlines/writers block/whatever other reason they just say "Ya that'll have to do"?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,933 ✭✭✭H8GHOTI

You always here people saying "It's a grower"

What albums did people not really think were great when they first listened to it but loved it after a few listens.

Mine would have to be Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion. Liked My Girls the first time I heard it and downloaded the album on the strength of it. Didn't think much of the album on first listen but love it now.

    I totally forgot:

the boo radleys - giant steps and everything's alright forever.

Learning to walk would be, if you skip the first track.

FWIW I can tell you for a fact that bands are aware of their less than spectacular material.

Excellent idea for a thread. One that immediatly springs to mind is High Violet by the National. And Seldom Seen Kid by Elbow as well.

Feels bizarre to think about it now, but I didn't get LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver at all the first few times I heard it. Wasn't until I heard it on at a party that it clicked, which seems appropriate.

Didn't see anyone mention Guns n Roses - Appetite for Destruction, pretty much perfect from start to finish.

    also:
    hendrix - are you experienced?
sex pistols - nevermind the bollocks
    hole - live through this
    alice in chains - dirt
    white stripes - elephant
system of a down - mezmerize
motley crue - saints of los angeles

and the controversial pick: green day - american idiot

that's just a quick glance at the cd's on the shelf in front of me

Just thinking about this today, listening to Badly Drawn Boys "Born In The UK", didnt really do anything for me for ages, but recently I've started to love it, probably my fave BDB album at this point.

The Doves most definitely. Probably one of the most under rated bands around.

Besides the deep singing voice there's not really much there that puts them in league with Joy Division.

Also spiritoftheseventies said they draw on The Smiths, no that they were like them.

Being influenced by a group and sounding like them are too very different things.

For instance, Alex Chilton influenced REM but I'd never mistake an REM track for a Big Star track.

More than just the voice though. Songs like Lit Up have a very significant Joy Division sound to them

But yeah, take your point on difference between influenced by and sounding like a band.

Dont even see the voice comparison to be fair. A lot of influences there. Great album regardless Monkey

Ok from talking to Jeff Lebowski, we're going to try this for a while, instead of starting a new thread asking for some new music, this one is to be used.

This will hopefully encompass people looking for:

I like 'band x' recommend something similar.

Recommend me an album with no filler.

Name an album with no filler/Name an album that grew on you.

Basically all that really happens is people list there favourite albums, we're hoping this will put all queries in one thread and generate more discussion and less of band lists.

Feed back appreciated but do it by pm, thanks.

Which Broken Social Scene solo albums would be considered best?

Have the Do Make Say Think stuff but didn't enjoy it so much. Also have Feist's albums, only alright. Have the feeling that KC Accidental may be the heart of BSS.

To be honest, although it meandered a bit, my 'filler' thread was more of a query on the state of music and whether or not bands were still making no-filler albums or if this was just a perception coloured by the passage of time. That said, that particular theme had more or less blown itself out in the thread.

I reckon this thread here will be a bit too broad to be of any real use, but time will tell.
I liked the thread in the TV forum where posters would name a program, describe it a bit and list similar artists in a 'if you like this...' format, but then again last.fm and allmusic.com do exactly that.

We can fine tune as we go along, over the last couple of months there has been alot of 'recommend me an album' threads in one guise or other. Would be grateful if people went with this for the moment.

@pick, i can see what the filler thread had hoped to do, but as you can acknowledge it went a bit off the rails, if you want i can re-open it but i might tidy it up a bit first.

Feedback appreciated but if it's going to go off topics PM Jeff and myself.

I think the recommendations would be enhanced by including a link to a review. You can't go wrong with allmusic.com - great reviews and you also get a tracklist for the album and a chance to browse the artist's other works.

My recommendation for now is The Posies - 'Frosting on the Beater' - an absolute gem of a guitar pop album from 1993 which doesn't get a fraction of the recognition it deserves. Unfortunately none of their many other albums come close to this.... here's the allmusic review

Considering the rate at which threads get off topic and get hijacked and considering that new threads seem to get more people engaged in discussion (IMO) why is B.ie going down this route?

Seems like extra work with very little to recommend it, again IMO.

In fairness Milan I think the balance is right. Threads do go off topic a bit but none of them have been hijacked from what i can see. But we dont need five different recommend me an album type threads. Good call there which was needed and this thread will do the business for general queries.

Ok, gimmeh some recommendations for some nice music to relax to:
I've been listening to Jonsi & Alex's 'Riceboy Sleeps' and love it, in fact it's just perfect for sleepytime.
So anything with that kind of atmosphere, or something like Beach House's 'Teen Dream' (slightly more 'active' for want of a better term)
