Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I needed to know about the fadas but I went the long way round. In MS Word I clicked:

    insert/symbol

and then entered all the ones I wanted. Then I copied them all one by one, then I opened my clipboard up and just clicked whichever one I needed as I was going along. Problem is they all disappear when I close down. Now I'm looking for this GR key which I don't see. For the Euro sign I just hit Ctrl/Alt/4 at the same time.

On my keyboard the Gr actually says AltGr and it is immediately to the right of the space bar, so presumably what you are doing is much the same as Gr4

yup, it just means wiping everything off it.

    Decent guide.

The letters are important^^^ the (C: ) (E: ) etc, they're the drive letters, they're handy for keeping track if you're using a load of different externals USBs, if you plug you're thumb drive into your computer while on the "My computer" screen it'll pop up in front of ya.

It's directly to the right of the space bar...unless you have a non-standard keyboard.

Aiyeee beaten to it. Should have refreshed.

To be clearer with the run box, when you hit Start (although no start in windows 7 either, it's a flashing windows logo Orb type thing) you have to type run in the search box and then type whatever your're after...charmap. An added step.

    Anyway...

Isn't it funny how you are looking at something (for years) and ya still don't see it? There it flippin' is, the Alt Gr key looking straight at me and I have never seen it, nor ever used it, nor ever told what it was for. So I have now searched 'Help' for more info and now know that you add the shift key for upper case letters. Aww thanks! I luv youze guys!!! :D

I wonder what Gr stands for? Probably something obvious, now I have asked...

I've had a look at Wikipedia and it would seem to mean Graphic and Alt would be alternative

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,551 ✭✭✭Rubecula

I tend to use (Ctrl and) Alt key to the left of the space bar, it seems to do the same thing as regards to fadas and the Euro sign.

I say seems to, as I have not explored all possibilities as yet.

'Fraid I need more help please. :o I have 25 pages typed in MS Word (2002/dinosaur version) and want to number the pages from 1-22 but when I insert page numbers they all get numbered. I tried deleting the last few but then they all disappeared. Any slick and easy way to do this please?

You could change the font, the font size and play around with the page margins (you should get away with 5mm margin left and right. Go no less 10mm top and botton then print off one page and see if any of the text is missing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,108 ✭✭✭Jellybaby1

Thanks Galen, I understand what you say. I had to have this finished a couple of days ago so I just took the unnumbered pages off and saved them as a separate file and then numbered all the others. A long and winding road but it does the job. Ta very much.

Word perfect is undergoing a rebirth. Corel bought it over so I expect to see Adore Word Perfect making inroads into Microsoft near monopoly on wordprocessors.

Word will automatically number pages sequentially so if you remove a page Word will adjust to this. What you need to look at it Section Breaks :)

Try Libreoffice suite - it's free but a big download at 200mb, it will take 15 minutes on a 2.5meg connection to download http://www.libreoffice.org/download/?type=win-x86&lang=en-GB&version=3.5.2

I have another computer problem. Remember, I don't know all the jargon and I don't know what goes on inside the mah-cheen either so words of one syllable would be helpful! :o When I press the button on the computer tower to start it up, the button flashes on and off and the computer won't come on. At this stage I can only switch it off by holding the button in for about 4 seconds. It takes several tries to get the computer started. When it is on, it sounds like a Massey Ferguson starting up. The computer is in a spare bedroom. We can hear it's 'engine' when we are downstairs in the living room. Is it about to die on me?

If you're forced to do a hard shutdown (4 seconds) then technical help, it sounds like your hard drive is dying at the very least - get help NOW.

Ditto what Galen said, get it looked at now before it does go 'poof' on you. I didn't and I lost a lot of stuff that i can't replace.

    Is it a Dell?

Their systems/hardrives do that real loud knocking when they start to fail. I've never heard it on any other machine like that.

Theirs a really simple test to confirm its the harddrive, on my phone now so will put it up later....if yoyo doesnt beat me to it.:-)

I've 3 words for everyone - backup backup backup. Quite simply get yourselves a nice big external hard drive (Argos 1TB for 128 Euro) for all your documents, music, pictures and videos. It's well worth the money in the long run because hard drives are built like a record player - they die hard and fast.

I have tried Googling it and following the instructions there and rebooted but no joy.:(

Try this, if it doesn't work, then this.

If they don't work I'd just delete it from control panel, restart and reinstall again.

If no one turned it off (but it's off) then it would be no harm to run this (free), just incase. Virus(s?) usually do things like that.

I learned to use a computer on a Mac. Macs tend to use the keyboard a lot more than PCs, though now the PCs can be used much the same. There was one particular keyboard combination which you would not have occasion to use, except by accident, but the first time I hit it threw me into complete panic.

There was an ominous grinding and clunking noise from the hard drive, which went on and on as I got more and more anxious, then just as I was about to go into meltdown a little animated robot figure entered from the side and walked across the bottom of the screen. As he disappeared all went quiet and everything carried on as normal.

There are a few of these easter eggs in Windows, but in XP they are all kinda boring, the Mac ones were funny (after you got over the shock:D)

    1. Type word you want to link, say Boards
    2. Highlight word
    3. Click on little Earth icon with chain/link - Insert Link
    4. type URL/website link into pop-up box, in this case - http://www.boards.ie
    5. Voila!

    Alternatively to do it manually

    type following
    Boards
and substitute website you want to link to instead of http://www.boards.ie

Anyone got knowledge of Photoshop elements 6? I've created a page of text, each word is in a text box, every word is a different font and a different size and and its the same word in every text box. I want to change the colour of all the text but I can't find a way to do that in one go. I know how to do this in Word but Photoshop needs more savvy. Begging for help please. :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,770 ✭✭✭✭looksee

Assuming all your text is still 'live' - it has a T and the word in the layers palette - hold down shift and click on all the layers till they are all selected.

Then make sure the Text tool is clicked and go to the colour square on the top bar (its just to the left of the curvy T icon) and click it, choose a colour from the picker that will come up and all your text will turn that colour.

Edit: thats in Photoshop CS5, that process hasn't changed through several versions so I assume it will be the same for Elements 6

Is there any one person who understands everything that goes on in a typical desktop .I get the impression that it's darker and darker the further you go into them and eventually nothing makes any sense at all .

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

Correct... there is no one who even understand any given layer imho. You have specialists at each level Firmware (the very machine-oriented sort of software that talks to electronic hardware), then the OS (operating software) which orchestrates all the programs, peripherals and general management, and then software (apps) which do stuff for the user (like Word and Excel) and then networks which transmit data around the place. Along with these there are other specialities like Databases (where large amounts of data are stored for fast summing-up and retrieval, like maybe the Census) and security ... those guys are so odd, even I find them a bit nerdy :)

So no, you would be pushed to find anyone in any of those sections that understood even their layer completely. To give you an example, I know someone who has spent about 7 years writing software for microsoft which deals with modems... nothing else, just telephone modems and mobile modems.

Computing is a VERY big area :)

Just before I read this I had found the way to do it. I kept doing Ctrl+A which works in Word but not PS of course, silly me! But if you select 'All Layers' in 'Layers' it did it for me. Although I did some PS on my previous course I didn't really get enough time to make friends with it but that's on my 'to do' list again now. Thanks for the help anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,770 ✭✭✭✭looksee

Yes there is a vital phrase missing out of my instructions...you click on the layers with type on them that you want to change Anyway you were obviously nearly there!

I find I can look at a program I know really well and think - I know how to do this, but just can't remember. Very frustrating!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,882 ✭✭✭frozenfrozen

If the text in photoshop is no longer on a text layer and instead has been rasterized to just being like pictures of text, then you can merge all the layers, control click on that layer and then fill in the layer with the colour of your choice. On Photoshop extended the shortcut to do that is shift + F5, but I am not sure if it is the same thing on elements.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,770 ✭✭✭✭looksee

But the text shapes would have to be selected or you would just get a rectangle of solid colour?
