Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Diabetes Federation of Ireland holding its National Spring Meeting in Athlone

The Diabetes Federation of Ireland will be holding its National Spring Meeting in the Radisson Blu Hotel on Sunday April 10th at 2pm. The meeting will focus on the importance of self care with and will centre on inner motivation with a goal to getting things done.

An array of speakers will address attendees and actively provide up to date information on new developments and general lifestyle advice. Speakers on the day include Dr. Tommy Kyaw Tun, Clinical Senior Lecturer, Connolly Memorial Hospital who will discuss ‘The ABC’s of Diabetes’, which will be an educational outline on the do’s and don’ts for people with diabetes.

Dr. Ronan Canavan, Consultant Endocrinologist, Loughlinstown Hospital will highlight the importance of, and the need for, regular diabetic retinopathy (an eye condition affecting 1 in 3 people with diabetes in Ireland) and foot care screening while Professor Richard Firth, Consultant Endocrinologist and HSE Diabetes Clinical Lead, will be speaking on the national development of new screening services in these areas and when people can expect to avail of them.

Kieran O’Leary, CEO, Diabetes Federation of Ireland, said “the development and launch of these new services is of extreme importance to thousands of people with diabetes throughout the country. On their behalf, I very much welcome the HSE’s commitment to developing these diabetes services and look forward to the day the first patients receive their written invitation to attend for eye and foot screening appointments”.

To conclude the meeting, Ms Anne Mullan, Dietitian, Diabetes Federation of Ireland will draw attention to the sneaky little habits that sabotage our best efforts to lose weight despite eating well on a daily basis.
“I would urge people with diabetes to come along to this meeting and hear from the experts” said Kieran.

The next Type 1 meeting takes place on Tuesday, 12th April in the Old Ground Hotel, Ennis from 8pm til 9:30pm.

The subject of dealing with alcohol came up last month so I've found a couple of fact sheets on the subject and will bring them. I also thought that we would talk about blood glucose testing; how often we do it and why. This might be interesting to discuss because we all seem to do it differently.

    Regards,
    Grainne.

    Hello Everyone,

I've done this as a separate thread to ensure that as many people see it as possible - hope that's ok with the mods.

The following can be found on DA's website; http://www.diabetesaction.ie/campaign-archives/2011/04/paediatric-adolescent-diabetes-services/23

    Paediatric & Adolescent Diabetes Services

There are approximately 3,500 children and adolescents with diabetes in Ireland and nearly all have of whom have type 1 diabetes. Hundreds of children and adolescents with diabetes can’t access advances in care, such as insulin pumps, because local paediatric diabetes teams in hospitals around Ireland are under resourced.

Children and adolescents with diabetes should attend hospital an average of 4-5 times a year to monitor their diabetes this aims to limit the subtle but cumulative damage which diabetes can cause to the eyes, kidneys, nerves (neuropathy) and smaller blood vessels (microvascular damage).
The care children and adolescents with diabetes receive as youths will decide how full and productive a life they can lead as adults and studies show that long term health outcomes for children and adolescents with diabetes relates directly to the resources put in to health services.

Children and adolescents with diabetes learn to control their diabetes, to monitor their blood sugars and insulin levels. Self-control of diabetes is challenging, but technological advances now allow children and adolescents with diabetes to monitor their diabetes with intensive therapies (such as insulin pumps or MDIs /multiple daily injections) much more effectively and accurately than with standard treatments.

However, insulin pump technology is not available at hospitals where to the vast majority of children and adolescents receive their diabetes care, even though improved control of diabetes can lessen the development of complications in adulthood by as much as 76%.

Diabetes Action is seeking the restructuring of current services to allow more children and adolescents to access life changing treatments. Click this link to see our proposal; http://www.diabetesaction.ie/PDFs/PaedsCampaign.10.05.05.11.pdf

Support out campaign by clicking on this link: http://www.diabetesaction.ie/CFLatestCampaign/index.cfm and sending the predrafted letter to your local TD or Senator about services in your area, asking them to seek policy change in the Department of Health and the HSE.

Insulin pump therapy is particularly valuable in paediatric patients especially for those of pre-school age in whom the developing brain is vulnerable to hypoglycaemia but should be offered as a treatment option for to all children and adolescents where appropriate.

New treatments that control blood sugar and insulin levels are available, but patients need to work with a specialist diabetes nurse and dietician to access this care and paediatric diabetes teams outside of Dublin rarely have the resources to offer these new treatments.

This often leads families to seek a referral to one of the three Dublin hospitals offering intensive treatments like insulin pumps, requiring time off school, off work and causing a separation from the care provided by the local diabetes service team.

Please support our campaign for improved services!

    Hello everyone,

So far, 650 people have logged onto www.diabetesaction.ie and supported this campaign – this is good but given the amount of children and adolescents with diabetes in Ireland is 3,500 we should be doing better.

However, on the up side, there’s been a very good response from TDs who have submitted 31 parliamentary questions on paediatric diabetes services. The parliamentary questions will all focus the minds of the HSE on paediatric services so it is important that they are submitted from all over Ireland.

The constituencies where no TD has entered a parliamentary questions are:
Clare, Cork East, Cork North Central, Cork North West, Cork South Central, Donegal North East, Donegal South West, Donegal, Dun Laoghaire, Galway West, Kerry North-West Limerick, Limerick, Limerick City, Longford-Westmeath, Mayo, Meath West, Roscommon-South Leitrim, Sligo-North Leitrim, Tipperary North, Tipperary South, Wexford

Diabetes Action and all the children in Ireland with Type 1 Diabetes need your help. Please take the two minutes to log onto www.diabetesaction.ie and send a letter to your local TD's!

The Diabetes Federation of Ireland is organising its annual “Activity Day for Teenagers with Diabetes” between the ages of 10-16 years on Friday 15th July 2011.

The Diabetes Federation has booked 6 outdoor activity centres around the country. The activity centres have being chosen so that all teenagers who wish to attend an event can do so regardless of where they live in Ireland.

The aim of the event is to bring together as many adolescents with diabetes as possible from the locality to enjoy a fun day with their peers in a relaxed environment.

During the day, teenagers will have a chance to have a go at kayaking, rock climbing or caving. A hot lunch and snacks will be provided throughout the day. Healthcare professional support, provided by the Federation, will be available throughout the day. Buses from a number of paediatric clinics to each of the centres have been arranged.

The Diabetes Federation of Ireland will cover the majority of the costs for this event but we are asking each participant to pay a nominal fee of €20 to secure their place.

This year, the RTE television show Operation Transformation plans to feature Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). They are looking for people whose lives have been affected as a result of developing Type 2 Diabetes. It doesn't matter what age you are, or where you live, Operation Transformation would love to hear from you. Please e-mail your story, including when you developed Type 2 Diabetes, how you felt about it and how it has affected your life, to ot@vipmg.tv before closing date of the 17th September.

This would be a great opportunity for someone who feels like they need help from a team of experts to get on top of their diabetes.

Diabetes Ireland Research Alliance in association with the Juvenile Diabetes Researc Foundation (JDRF)
Type 1 Diabetes Research Development Meeting

Global Type 1 diabetes research is moving at such a pace that it is bringing renewed optimism of finding a cure to families living with Type 1 diabetes. Recent advances in the areas such as the artificial pancreas and stem cell research give cause for such optimism.

    Hello Everyone,
I'm the secretary of the Clare branch of Diabetes Ireland and I'm trying to create media publicity for the Type 1 Research meeting in Limerick on the 27th.

I'm looking for a person with type 1 diabetes or a parent with a child with type 1 living in Co Clare and Co Limerick who would agree to be interviewed by local newspapers about life with type 1 and the importance of research.

If you are interested in taking up this cause please email me at clarebranchdfi@gmail.com Your help would be much appreciated.

    Regards,

Finding the cure for Type 1 diabetes is just a matter of time and money to fund the world’s best research.

Global Type 1 diabetes research is moving at such a pace that it is bringing renewed optimism of finding a cure to families living with Type 1 diabetes. Recent advances in the areas such as the artificial pancreas and stem cell research give cause for such optimism.

The primary charitable funder of this research, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) who spend $70 million per annum on research, developed a partnership with Diabetes Ireland to provide an opportunity for Irish people to be part of the global work of JDRF into finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes.

Under the umbrella of the Diabetes Ireland Research Alliance, the subsidiary charity of the Diabetes Ireland, the partnership aims to:
    • encourage high quality type 1 diabetes research in Ireland.
    • promote Ireland as a JDRF base for international-led research into finding a cure for diabetes.
    • build a sustainable relationship with Irish based scientists and researchers.
    • raise funds for Type 1 diabetes research.
Chairperson of the Diabetes Ireland Research Alliance, Professor Seamus Sreenan said “this is a fantastic opportunity for Irish based scientists and researchers to build a sustainable relationship with JDRF and work
towards being part of its huge Type 1 diabetes research programme. Our shared aim is to develop Ireland’s contribution in the field of Type 1 diabetes research through the partnership. It is also an opportunity for the Irish community to directly donate to this research”.

The partnership will hold two public research open meetings focusing on these developments. The first will take place in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise on Monday 26 March at 7.30pm and the second in the Greenhills Hotel, Limerick on Tuesday 27 March at 7.30pm.

Speaking at the meeting will be Ms. Maebh Kelly on current Type 1 research developments which will include the Diabetes – genes, autoimmunity and prevention (DGAP) research project. Insights from this study have the potential to lead to key drug developments aimed at preventing or reversing Type 1 diabetes.

Also speaking on the day will be Ms Emma Warrington, on how she and her family got involved with the D-GAP research project. Janet Allen, researcher from Cambridge University will present on the Artificial Pancreas Project. The Artificial Pancreas Project or closed loop system can automatically regulate blood sugar levels by not only giving insulin according to the body’s minute to minute needs, but also administering
glucagon automatically as well. The findings of this project are extremely positive and there is a great deal of work going into making this a reality for people with type 1 diabetes.

Last year the partnership set itself a target of raising €75,000 per annum for Type 1 research. Based on funding raised, the Alliance recently put out a call to Irish researchers for a €225k three year high quality innovative Type 1 diabetes research project which it plans to jointly fund in conjunction with the Health Research Board and the Medical Research Charities Group starting later this year.

Professor Sreenan added “last year, the members of the Irish diabetes community helped reach the €50k target and with their continuing support we hope to achieve more this year. This is a cutting edge diabetes research development and local people with diabetes should not miss this opportunity to hear from the experts”.

I wish I could go to this meeting tonight but unfortunately my daughter's first confession comes first.

Maybe there's somebody from boards who is and can post a mini review of it tomorrow???

Wish I could go to as I am involved in Diabetes Research, will they be hosting a similar evening in Dublin at any time in the future?

Have you heard of any research groups going down, speaking to a few in UCD, no one seems to have heard about it, will it be a generally science based presentation or its it more of a public awareness to the benefits of funding research?

The Diabetes Research Alliance usually hold 2 meetings like this per year - they could be anywhere. You can join their email list to be informed of the meetings. Their contact info is here

There was a couple of small research projects during 2011; details would have been posted on the Diabetes Ireland facebook page and I know that there are tenders out to launch a Irish based Type 1 research project at the moment.

The presentations are public awareness based and will talk about Type 1 specific research being undertaken by the JDRF in the UK. There will be a presentation at the end on fund raising and how none of this research can take place without it. People will be asked to consider organising a fund raising event or if they would participate in others but no-one will be asked for money there and then.

I should probably add at this point that admission at this event is free.

Starter Kit; A Guide for Adults with Type 1 Diabetes.

Diabetes Ireland launched the Irish version of “Starter Kit; A Guide for Newly Diagnosed Adults with Type 1 Diabetes” in March 2012.

This book has been adapted from it’s original format, which was written by the Type 1 Diabetes Network; a group of young adults with type 1 diabetes in Australia. We sincerely thank them for giving their permission to adapt it for Ireland.

The Starter Kit is for newly diagnosed adults and contains lots of useful information on how to adjust to life as a person with diabetes, such as a “checklist of stuff to do within the first month after diagnosis” and “10 things we wish someone told us the day we were diagnosed”.

Established adults with type 1 diabetes and adolescents who have recently transitioned into the adult world of diabetes will find the Starter Kit useful too. It includes information about where to find peer support, recommendations for books and websites, and links to all public resources available to a person with diabetes.

Everybody will appreciate the Cheat Sheet: this is a two-sided page of information aimed at those without type 1 diabetes. It is there for you to copy and share with your family and friends and can help you get on with living your life rather than feeling compelled to be the “font of all diabetes knowledge.”

Diabetes Ireland hopes that this book will help guide you on the right path to managing your diabetes successfully and open a world of support to you.

The Starter Kit is available to download from the http://www.diabetes.ie/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/T1-Starter-Kit.pdf and paper copies are available by contacting Diabetes Ireland’s head office on LoCall 1850 909 909 or by emailing your request to info@diabetes.ie.
