im wondering do people always tip in cafes, taxis etc? i always tip between 10 and 20 percent of the bill and feel that maybe i could save money if i didnt have to. so does everybody tip? is it rude not to?

I tend to tip unless mega unhappy with the service or food, or if the prices were off the wall! Also hate the obligatory service charge, I'm happy enough to tip for a job well done but feel a bit miffed that that nicety is demanded on top of a big bill instead of politely hoped for

Only if the service is top notch (and only in America, not in Ireland), otherwise the back of me feckin' hand you'll get!

Quick calculation tells me that you would save 10 to 20 percent by not tipping.

As a rule I tip for good service, anything less they can fcuk off. Take some pride in your job and respect your customer isn't alot to ask.

Anyone ever tip the pilots on a plane if they get you there on time?

I never tip cause I'm a cheap bastard.

I'd usually throw a couple of euro but it all depends on the service. If the service was awful then I wouldn't bother.

I give them a big clap instead.

10 - 20 % percent is boom time tips! Grade the service on a level from 1-10 and give that percent-ish

Table for two please, pay standard price

Table for six please, pay standard price plus service charge

The restaurant business, where you give more business and you get charged extra.
Most any other business you'd get a discount.

I tip in resturants because it's the norm, but I don't like doing it. I'm of the opinion that the price quoted is what I should pay, the staff get paid a wage if they think they deserve more get another job.
I don't accept this "uh we don't get payed much we relie on tips". That might work in other countries but there are plenty of people on the same wage that don't get tips just be happy your in a proffesion that has the possibility of earning a bit extra on the side every so often. It shouldn't be expected.
    Damned Americans fault it is.

Tipping is a stupid practice that will only lead to employers paying people feck all hoping the customers will pick up the price while continuing to entice people in with seemingly low prices, as is already the case in the US

I always give a tip unless the service was exceptionally bad.

The pizza delivery man and the barber MIGHT get a couple of euro every now and then.

    That's about it.

Deliverymen get whatever change is to the nearest fiver, cause they never carry change and I'm not arsed rooting around for coin.

Other than that I'll rarely tip, in Ireland at least. Our minimum wage is more than sufficient to live on.

In other countries, like America, I'll tip, because they work a damn sight harder than waitresses etc in Ireland but make less.

How do you know waitresses in "other countries" work a damn sight harder....? have you ate in every restaurant in Ireland..? do Polish waitresses work harder at home or here ? Is there a "rate my service" table for staff in restaurants etc....a lot of people use America as the standard for a comment about tipping..I,ve been there a few times and the service is more or less the same as here..

No, I haven't "ate" in every restaurant in Ireland. No idea about the Poles, I can only speak for countries that I have eaten in and from that experience, I get my coffee refilled faster, I get more than a grudging welcome and smile and overall the experience is ten times more pleasant.

If I was out for a big meal in a restaurant and got good service, I'd leave a bit of change as a tip, wouldn't be working out percentages though!
I do tip delivery drivers though for some reason.

I don't tip. What Mr Pink says in that video posted above sums up my feelings on the matter.

I only tip if I'm really happy. However, if the service was really bad I tip 1 cent in the hope it will piss them off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,790 ✭✭✭2011abc

10-15% is obscene !The guy who said rate 1-10 and tip as that % isnt far off .I probably average 2-5 quid and maybe 5% ...15% would be nine quid on a 60 euro meal ...just plain mental.

Tip if you recieve good service. Otherwise don't.
