In an effort to eat breakfast in the mornings, I have found a recipe for nut/cereal bars - which I actually like!

This makes me wonder if they are at all healthy

The recipe is a mixture of toasted nuts, oats and branflakes mixed with:
Golden syrup & Honey & Maple syrup (listed in order of quantity).

I've read somewhere (? no idea where) recently that some sugars are worse that others.

I was guessing the natural sugars in the honey and maple syrup may be ok, just no idea about the golden syrup.

Anyone any thought on the sugar content?

    Thanks!

Too high. Really, honey and syrup and all those things have the same amount of sugar as table sugar, they just sound better. And any recipe that has honey and maple syrup and golden syrup is far too high in sugar.

I've got a recipe from Damien Maher floating about, I'll see if I can find it.

    1/2 cup pecans
    1/2 cup walnuts
    1/3 cup flaxmeal
    1/3 cup nut butter
    4-6 eggs
    pinch salt
    1/3 cup honey
    6 scoops protein powder

Mix all ingredients, put on oiled baking tray and bake for 15-20 minutes at 175 C. I'm assuming you bash the nuts rather than use them whole.

I didn't make this, but I know some people who did, and who liked the result.

There is honey in this one, but I'm guessing a much lower amount.

    Thanks Eileen,

    Just as I feared :(.
    I'll try your recipe today.

Would substituting flaxmeal with oat flakes be ok?

I'm not even going to think about how bad my muffin recipe must be!

wouldn't make much of a difference, Muffins are not supposed to be healthy

No :P - but rather than buying chocolate muffins, I make them with wholemeal flour/oats and berries. Can't help but think I just codding myself tho.

    I tried EileenG's recipe...sort of.
I'd no pecan nuts, so used hazel and small amount of pine.
Used peanut butter, oats instaed of flaxmeal, no protein powder.

    Result:
Even though I greased a non stick tray - it stuck a bit so I'll line it next time. Made about 16.

Texture wise they come out a bit like brownies. My recipe was a bit more like flapjacks.

And they are really delicious, and not as sweet as what I had been making. :)

Good to know. I keep promising to make them, and keep forgetting.
