Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Problem isn't the phone; its whatever site you're using that has an infected ad network or similar.

May have been discussed before but does anyone know the distance in km's from Gort to Tuam on current road and what the new distance will be when the motorway is completed. I would imagine it will cut at least half an hour off the trip.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,227 ✭✭✭✭JCX BXC

If your destination is Tuam I'm sure it would, if your destination is Galway, it's fairly negligible and likely will just result in even worse traffic.

  • Registered Users Posts: 55 ✭✭Morebypasses

I travel from Kerry to North of Tuam a few times a year so keeping the cruise control at 120kph from Gort to Tuam and not have to endure Kilcolgan, Clarinbridge, Claregalway, Tuam etc etc should cut half an hour off surely.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 14,459 Mod ✭✭✭✭marno21

The existing road from N18 interchange at Gort to the roundabout north of Tuam via the N17 is 58km. The M17/M18 scheme when complete will take 57km to do this (surprising how much more "direct" it is, yet the new M18 is very twisty).

Google maps suggests 62 mins to do the current route, at 120km/h + 100km/h for the Tuam BP the new route should take ~30 mins taking into account the roundabout at Tuam. A time saving of half an hour. Not bad.

Just noticed that they saved a few pennies by not angling the bridge deck over the railway line (or wasted some by building it with an extra beam).

I used to drive to Sligo a lot before from Limerick, this new road will easily cut half an hour if not more at peak times.

Should be under 2.5 hours when it opens

Sure it's already bypassed by the previous N18 Gort to Crusheen Scheme...

Given that Gort and Particularly Tuam will be very accessible once this project finishes, do people know of or have heard talk of development being attracted and a focus being put on growing these towns both with housing stock and with enticing businesses to locate/expand here.

It seems to me these towns could become growth hubs.

I think you can include Abbeyknockmoy there, since they are upgrading the N63 from M17 J2 to the town.

Why did they build the junction exit as a LILO when it's a motorway spec road. There are already poor exits on part of the M18 and the M7 ones at Roacrea and especially Moneygall are terrible. Why persist on new builds. What was the saving in comparison to the usual slip configuration.

If towns like Tuam and Abbeyknockmoy were to be expanded, then there may be a good case at some future point for the reopening of the Tuam to Athenry railway as a commuter route - good P+R facilities should attract many commuters once the train service is frequent enough at peak times.

  • Registered Users Posts: 231 ✭✭f2

I think saying Abbeyknockmoy is on the foot of major expansion because of M17 is optimestic, Tuam on the other hand SHOULD thrieve but there appears to be major stumbling blocks in that town with planning, they cant even get a truck stop/service station at the junction of bypass/M17, I believe currently 4 have tried

AFAIK it's down to predicted traffic volume. If it's expected to be low then they won't build a full spec junction. I've no idea what the cost difference is though.

That site is to close to the m17 and would be a bottleneck, the same reason at rathmorissy they can't get planning

Im talking of 4 sites the farthest been over 500m from the roundabout. as far as i know 2 of the proposed sites already contained service stations in ihe past

The LILOs near both Ennis and Roscrea are totally unacceptable I agree. However, the LILOs at Kiltiernan appear to be in line with the ones at Gort and Crusheen which are of a higher spec design. If the earlier designs were remodelled to reflect the latter, it would be something. In any case, all motorways should have full length ramps at junctions or not at all. The design used at Kiltiernan could be used for possible future 100kph expressways (RCB median with no hard shoulders) where there is too much traffic for Type 2 Dual, but too little to justify a motorway.

The junction at Roscrea was an after thought. Locals objected when they realized they weren't getting motorway access, then the junction was cobbled together, so it looks like the mess that it is.

There should always have been a junction with the N62 at Roscrea, seeing as it services a town and it's a national road passing over the N7/M7.

Which diamond sign? Northbound or southbound?

EDIT: If it's southbound and it's on a sign near/related to the exit for the city (R445), it's used to sign a diversionary route in the event of a tunnel closure.
