Piaggio MP3 LT licence requirements

24-03-2014 10:24pm#1The Piaggio MP3 Trike/Scooter is a tilting 3-wheel scooter first brought to the
market in 2006.
It comes in a range of engine sizes from 125-300-400 and now 500cc.
In recent years there was a lot of discussion over whether you could ride this
on a Class-B car licence or not. There are no current discussions on Boards
about this particular model.
It is now clear that the model which can be used on your Class-B car licence is the
MP3 LT (LT=Large Thread) and the reason for the car licence requirement is because
the front track sits at 465mm wide and is classified as a Trike,not as a motorbike.
The MP3 LT can be imported as a motorcycle for VRT purposes,insured as a
motorcycle,taxed as a motorcycle but driven on a Class-B car licence only.
The LT version of the MP3 is identified by a brake pedal on the foot rest
allowing both the front and rear brakes to be applied simultaneously.
The non-LT narrow front track version (spacing less than 460mm) can only be
driven on a motorcycle licence.
The engine options are quite nice now, up to 500cc without restriction on your class-B.
The 500cc is capable of over 75mph/120kph.
Does anyone currently have an MP3 LT model (any size) and can share their
experience of daily usage? Insurance cost? Road tax, MPG, Lts/Hr maintenance etc?

Trikes come under motorbike licences since January 2013 and are restricted depending on which bike licence is held so it depends when you acquired the full B licence as to whether you can ride a trike or not.
The NDLS state
"Tricycle: Where a person had an entitlement to the category B full licence prior to 19 January 2013 that also covered them to ride tricycles. They still retain that entitlement. All first full Licences issued for the category B from 19 January 2013 would not have this entitlement and therefore they must take out the appropriate Bike category to ride a trike. The appropriate bike category will depend on the CC of the Tricycle."
When i queried trikes and licences with the RSA previously i was told "A person who previously had a category B driving licence with restriction code 73 on the licence will on renewal be given both category B and A with code 46. Restricted to Tricycle"
