Looks my mate Willy is in for a scare tomorrow. Snapchat users have been hacked! Looks like many peoples privates may have been probed. Snapchat staff have been fingered in a recent tweet. "Backdoor entry was too easy" said one tweeter.

I'm surprised they didnt get some kind of virus by now.

    Read the link OP.

Interesting little article you've got there.

However, I didn't notice any penile reference or link to your many phallic inyourendo's, what (other than my ma) brought up this hole willy thing ?

NB: only specific areas of America were included - if you're outside of America, you're probably fine.

Enter your username on this here webpage to see if your Willy (or whatever your name is) was exposed.

Isn't it only a database of phone numbers and usernames? Only affects certain phone numbers in the US from what I read earlier.

Snapchat - lowest point in social media history? Can't get much more pointless in terms of social apps.

yup, no pictures or anything have been leaked just usernames and phone numbers that were originally censored by ** out the last 2 digits but now they have been removed completly

I added snapchat last week because people were talking about it.

So far I've gotten a pic of a dog with the drunken tag "I'll miss her little face so much". A pair of "awesome" socks (they were not so awesome). A video of a kettle boiling and of a toilet flushing (the inside of the cistern, not the yucky stuff).

Yes. I'm soooo glad I added snapchat. So glad.

Yeah I really don't see the point of Snapchat at all. I mean, the whole point of it is to send a pic that only lasts a few seconds before disappearing- but sure you can do a screen grab of them anyway. Stupid.

    read the article...
In its report published on 25 December, Gibson Security warned that a vulnerability on the Snapchat app could be used to reveal the phone numbers of users.

I reckon the point of it is to send dirty pics that wont last very long. Kind of sad really. My sister, bro in law and all his friends use it. One of the lads is constantly sending nude pics to a shared group. He is the type that will be fully clothed one minute, and butt naked the next without warning.

That describes half the male population in Ireland after a few drinks...

Yeah I get the whole "Ooh I'll send a dirty picture and sure it'll disappear then" but sure screen grab that and there it is forever. Stupid.

    Is that your dog?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Loads of people, Christmas is just another day just cause you see it as a day of rest or whatever doesn't mean everyone else does. Especially in tech where a delay of a day means the difference in being the original or just a copy cat. The hacking of the kinect to get it to run on a PC, guy was close to cracking it and went to bed and woke up and someone else had done it.

yeah but you get a notification if you take a screen grab so then you know that the person is a twat and someone you shouldn't send a pic to again and you can get them to delete it

I've not so much as installed it but I can guarantee there's a workaround or app that gets around that.

Godawful idea for an app that lulls the young and technically illiterate into a false sense of security when doing something with possibly life-destroying ramifications.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against nudity, porn or anything like it and feel it's a shame that our society castigates (or enhances and fetishizes) the naked form but in the real world, identifiable naked pics on-line could end quite a few people's jobs (teachers, social workers etc.) and apps like this make people feel far more tech savvy than they actually are.

yeah there are but they have made it very awkward to get around it in ios7 it was really easy till they plugged the hole and there are always low tech ways around it (use a camera to take an actual photo of the screen for example). I believe that even without this or other hacks it has been possible to retrieve photos off a phone but that involved freezing the phone so not the easiest.

As always when sending photos of an explicit nature there are some basic rules
    1. Always assume they are going to be leaked
    2. Never include a face
    3. ALWAYS ASSUSME THEY ARE GOING TO BE LEAKED

The fact that it sends you a notification is useless though - too late at the stage sure your boobs could have all over the internet by then.

As sleepy says, it's an app that lulls people into a false sense of security and that's never a good thing when it comes to techology.

I'm getting a bit sick of the almost auto-opt in to uploads to 'back up' on Google+ and iCloud etc.

Your phone's camera is increasingly not as secure as you'd think, especially with some of the utterly daft permissions Android apps seem to ask for.

While I'm not a huge fan of iOS, there's at least a bit less deep integration into data mining social networks.

If you weren't particularly IT savvy, you could easily end up publishing stuff online that you thought was private

I mean for example, I know business people who take photos of documents with their phone and all sorts of stuff. It's not entirely about pics of your bits. It's just getting too easy to publish (share), particularly on Androids.

I don't really 'get' snap chat to be honest. It's like twitter for the illiterate?

Not much use if a photo of your bits have been sent around to all and sundry. Bit late to be shutting the gate after the horse had bolted- the person might be a twat but now your twat is on show to everyone else.

Edit: I just noticed your username. Maybe you're ok about photos of your bits, you seem quite open about that kind of thing! :)

Yup agreed but thats always been the way and at least with the notification you can track a source instead of the way it used to be.

There is 0 ways of being safe in this day and age with things like that you can only hope that whoever is receiving what you are sending is a decent person.

As for me... Blame the kids for my username and as for photos... sweet jesus yes there are photos of me online that really shouldn't (check SSF thread for one prime example :p) but none involve nudity ... well maybe some, and there are photos of me on peoples phones but again i don't really have an issue with them. I'm an adult and I know that those people are sound and even if they were leaked or posted online as long as its not malicious and they give me a heads up!

Because before Snapchat the internet was devoid of pictures of foolish teenagers wearing very little?

I think the point Sleepy was making is that it seems more secure than it actually is. People hear about it and automatically assume that yeah this is fine and won't come back and haunt me, especially when you have the other person who may know the workaround to save can pressure them saying yeah its safe it deletes it etc etc

My problem here is that I don't believe that this security aspect is actually relevant to Snapchat's appeal. That they're temporary is important but not because people are preparing for lives in politics.

If people want to send pictures of their bits to the boyfriend/girlfriend then they'll do so regardless; as people have done since the invention of the Polaroid. I don't think Snapchat is driving or changing any sort of behaviour there at all.

What it does encourage is the snapshot taking - a quick happy Christmas picture of a tree, friend falling over drunk, new socks, etc - that probably would have been posted to Facebook (in the distant past) or more lately circulated around WhatsApp. The temporary nature of these pictures lies in their disposable nature rather than some real security or reputational concern. Like a text message they are designed to be read once and then forgotten.

Ultimately most people are very unlikely to be anything on their phones that would cause anything more than mild embarrassment if released. And we all have pictures like that on the phones already (images from that night/place where your man/one did this/that) that don't get posted/sent anywhere but get aired every so often when the phone is passed around the pub as we reminiscence.

So yeah, I don't really see the harm in Snapchat at all.
