I had to google Henry Shefflin, and I was sure Ruby Walsh was a horse until another quick google corrected that mistake. But Roche before Kelly

Apart from that, eh, where was I again Ted?

Having Stephen Roche and not Seán Kelly is laughable.

Seán Kelly is one of the greatest cyclists of the last 40 years, Roche isn't a patch on him.

I suppose I'd rank them in order of sporting achievements.

    How would you rank them?

What about yer man who won the coldest marathon in the world & it was his second or third marathon?

Liam Brady is missing from this list.

& what of Oliver St. John Gogarty? Didn't he win an Olympic medal? So what if it was in poetry... he was a good goalie.

The teacher from Galway?? Who almost qualified for the Olympics last year? It wasn't his 2nd or 3rd Marathon, and beating 40 others once hardly qualifies as a reason to put him in the top Irish Sportspeople

Also, not including the likes of Sean Kelly, Liam Brady, John Giles, Paul McGrath, Paidi O'Se to name but a few is ridiculous.

    BOD
    Keane
    Taylor

Don't care much for the rest.

BOD is one of the greatest rugby players of all time? How can you even claim he is a "run of the mill" sports person? Perhaps the greatest sports person to ever come from this country is BOD!

Sonia O'Sullivan - Consistently among the worlds best for a long period.
Brian O'Driscoll - Ditto, always performed for Ireland and an absolute warrior.
Katie Taylor - May end up being our greatest Olympian ever with another Gold. Successful in 2 sports.
Roy Keane - Captain of one of the best teams in the world and incredible leader.

Stephen Roche - 1 great year winning the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia.

    Pat Spillane
Henry Shefflin - Both great in their own right but I think international achievements rank higher than national ones.

Padraig Harrington - Great at his sport but I feel that the higher physical demands of other sports puts Golfing achievements below other sports.
Ken Doherty - See above, also less success in his sport than Harrington.
Ruby Walsh - Maybe personal bias but I dislike equestrian sports and feel that the fact that the horse is the one that actually runs fast automatically ranks this below any sport that a person is the one running.

Oh sorry, I completely forgot. Paul McGrath was the greatest defender of all time whereas BOD is clearly not in that league, he surely isn't one of the greatest, if not the greatest center, of all time. Also, I totally forgot that Paul McGrath was once named player of the decade, whereas Brian O'Driscoll was not.

Sonia O'Sullivan head and shoulders above the rest. She was always a contender for 10 years when EPO doping was rampant and undetectable. Cheated out of medals in Barcelona and Sydney and by those "turtle-blood" Chinese, and yet she still came back.

Sean Kelly and Stephen Roche are both dope cheats. Tough, successful and amazing athletes, but cheats nonetheless.

If only we had a sports forum. That would be cool, we could discuss sporty things. Might suggest one.
