Just did a bit more checking. Sky do not support "Airplay" and there is no prospect that the will do so

AirPlay is only relevant to Sky apps. We are talking about streaming local media from a server to Apple TV or similar device and if there are any issues with the Sky "hub" ie the modem/router they provide.

I had that also. Checked my bill on Line got a refund.

I got setup last night and asked them about the €1 charge..

Guy told me it was an initial "confirmation charge" and that it would be refunded on my first bill..

I guess they charge the €1 at time of sign-up just to validate that the payment details are valid etc..

I have streamed music from a pc with itunes running successfully to my apple tv using the sky hub. Haven't tried streaming video yet. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

It used to work with my vodafone router as well (both video and music). Never had an issue.

Thanks for that. If you do get around to streaming some video content, let us know how you got on if you dont mind.:)

Yes thanks for the information. The problems I had were with the white Huwuai modem/router from vodafone. The Apple TV wouldn't see my itunes library correctly, sometimes it would work and other times not. I asked for advice from Vodafone but surprise surprise they couldn't help, so I just went back to using my old BT Voyager modem/router which works without a problem.

Bit the bullet and called them and they offered me the Unlimited Broadband and calls for €17.50 per month with max spped up to 15 meg. Great saving compared to €45 per month for 5 meg and 40 gb download limit with Vodafone.

Adox keep me updated with the video streaming when you get all set up.

    Thanks

As a matter of interest. Has anyone with Sky BB up and running looked at their D/ and U/L speeds.

    From the start

    D/L 8142

    U/L 1080

    hiya,

I'm waiting at the moment to be switched over - just a few Q's if you don't mind.

I have possibly skipped a few pages of the thread but wondering if you could also post your line stats

    up & down snr
    up & down attenuation

the u/l & d/l you have above - is that what the router is showing as the sync speed?

can you remember what your previous sync was - mine currently (VF) is 7168/384
previously with eircom I was getting a 7616/512 sync - VF possily have my line set to a 7meg profile

are you on an LLU or non-llu exchange

it looks like, from other posts & sky's "10 day stability" that they may be using line profiling* rather than fixed profiles

(* I know the term for this, just can't remember it)

Lockster, did your contract with Vodafone expire before you went with Sky?
I unfortunately renewed contract with them about 4 months ago. Suppose I would have to pay the remaining contract term as a cancellation fee. :(

There is a difference between cancelling your connection and transferring to another provider.

Vodafone release my line to Sky with just over a week so there was obviously no 30 day notice period. Ordered Sky on the 10th December. All services transferred on the 21st.

I would not recommend submitting a cancellation notice as in that case you might be subject to a 30 day notice period. And you don't want to be hit with a 'new connection' fee.

The best way is to let your new provider handle it all.

I was offered a deal by Sky but only took it on the basis that the eircom cancellation charge wouldn't be too steep. I have a contract with eircom until August so will I get hammered for a three figure sum from them for transferring to Sky?

    My Broadband is now active...

Placed the order on Monday , Router arrived by courier Wednesday , Broadband went active today , Thursday. Despite them saying that it would be Monday next (21st) before it would be live.

    So far so good..

Still waiting for the phone to switch over - I didn't have Fixed line broadband before (using mobile broadband) so nothing to transfer etc hence the broadband going over before the phone.

Speed , whilst not great in the grand scheme of things is better than I expected..

Eircom would never offer me more than 1Mb service , so I never took it , but I'm getting close to 3Mb here today now which is consistent with my good days on Mobile broadband and not bad considering I'm 4km away from a small rural exchange.

At €27.50 a month though it's a bargain at any speed really...

I asked this yesterday when signing up and was told by the Sky rep not to contact Vodafone as they would look after that end of things. She said there was a chance that VF could disconnect me immediately and I would loose service for a few days until such time as Sky got things on their end up and running.

I had my phone with Vodafone , but no Broadband service enabled on the line..

So I guess they were able to just request the Broadband right away whereas transferring the phone service will take longer as Vodafone will have to release it etc.

Even though the line was broadband enabled about a year ago , I never took up the service as they would only offer me the bare minimum service - 1Mb/s with 10gb Download cap so I just stayed with 3 for mobile broadband as that gave me a 60Gb cap at least..

I'm up and running now and getting a consistent 2.5Mb + rate which I'm happy with.. Compared to what others might be able to get in urban areas it's pretty slow I know , but for where I am and what I have been used to over the last few years with an extremely erratic mobile service if it stays around where it is I'll be very happpy.

On the subject of sky broadband I took part in an online survey last night from a very reputable company and it gave me two options. One for sky with broadband talk and sky entertainment with an entry price of 55euro. Off peak calls were included and up to 24mb. One of the questions was would I pay 59 or 65 euro for this pack and I said no.

The other survey was for Eircom Fibre and contained 32 channels all of which were free to air except for sky1 and sky2 along with E4. The entry price for this was 59euro and 50mb fibre broadband was included with off peak calls. extra hd channels were available for 3euro (rte2 hd, sky1 hd and bbc1hd only) or multiroom for 5euro extra and sky sports pack was 30euro extra. The survey asked me would I pay 63euro or 69 euro also for the same pack and I said no...

As this was only a survey I cannot say if this will be the actual packages that are eventually brought to the market, but I will speculate it will be fairly near the mark....

Just read this entire thread with interest, current sky tv customer and vodafone at home DSL broadband customer. out of contract with both stats from my line are:

    Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 6144 Kbps 512 Kbps
Noise Margin 17.3 dB 25.0 dB
Line Attenuation 40.0 dB 22.5 dB
Output Power 12.1 dBm 19.8 dBm

@ 40.db kitz puts me at 2.9km from the exchange, eircom NGN sitemap (straight line) has me at just under 2km. I believe the exchange is not BT/LLU enabled (midleton, cork)

The reason I'm on this thread is that up till now, only vodafone could provide me with a DSL package that suited me (€45 p.m. 300gb allowance) i was happy with the speed until this week when it has been been patchy, netflix and youtube buffers/fails a lot when it didnt before (hence the 300gb allowance, we stream a lot and not just netflix ;) )

Am i right in thinking that due to my exchange i cannot get the €17.50 offer, but the one for €27.50? Do sky offer a broadband only package? our vodafone plan includes landline services but we dont use/need them. Even if i could get the same speed that Vodafone were giving me up till recently i would switch for
€27.50.... but more so for 17 quid!

Does anyone know the fair usage on skys unlimited plan? we average about 75-95gb downloads per month.....

+1 on the spiel - too many experiences dealing with sales people over the years

    however,
they recorded the "order" phone call for verification
I asked during the call re an AUP - was advised none*

    * yes, I was talking to a sales person
I'm sure they still have this on record if I needed it? ;)

from: sky site > my account > my broadband....

    Your Broadband Usage
You are a Sky Connect Unlimited customer.
The package you are on is truly unlimited, so you needn't worry about usage allowances.

    The T&Cs are here:
    http://www.sky.com/ireland/__PDF/Broadband_and_Talk_subscription_contract.pdf

There is no reference to an AUP on the usage in terms of amount of data.

Most of the references to a cap are along the lines of "if you are on a package that is subject to a cap"

    also see http://help.sky.com/broadband/usage-limits/how-sky-s-usage-policy-affects-you?country=ie

as an addition, I am 99% sure that sky are not using traffic shaping/management as they do in Britain
I have not found a site blocked yet either (didn't try any of the ones specifically referred to in the T&C tho)

I'm sure they will keep an eye on those of us that were able to get onto the "trial" - the majority are prob boardsies and may also be seen as high users.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 866 ✭✭✭thund3rbird_

    forgot to add:

the usage tool is not available in Ireland yet

they haven't given us a way of keeping an eye on our usage so how are we to know ;)

    I just got my call.

I had my UAN ready to give them in case they called.

I'm in Cabra - they told me my line can take 10Mb/s, which is what my router has been saying all along.

UTV decreased my speed profile when I changed to NGB a few years ago. Before NGB I was getting 7.6 but after they insisted the line could only get 5.1

Over the years it has increased little by little but UTV still insist I can only get 5.1

--- I only took the "Freetime" option : Evening & Weekends because that's all I need & I'm only on evening+weekends with UTV at the moment.

    Unlimited Broadband.

€10 per month plus FREE line rental but again, like some of you above, the email confirmation I got says €10 + €1 so I'm not happy with that...

    Further to above :

When I logged in to "My Sky" right after the call on Jan 14, I could see that my broadband order was "progressing" but my phone+talk order was "delayed"

I called the customer service number on Jan 21 as I was still seeing the delayed message and was told that there's "nothing wrong with the order" and it "must be an error" with my online account.

He apologised for the error and then I asked what's the extra €1 in the confirmation email -- he said "Line Rental" and then offered to transfer me to the sales dept. to CANCEL THE ORDER . . . I said I didn't want it cancelled and I ended the call.

    ---
    ---

This morning I received an email telling me that my broadband should be activated on Friday - Jan 25 - but the Hub has not yet been dispatched . . . AND I'm still seeing the delayed message for the phone service :(

In general the order tracking in mysky is not very reliable at all, as people here on boards have received their hubs, but yet it still says on the order tracking that they haven't even been dispatched yet! So it ain't reliable.
The sky talk order will stay delayed and in red colour until your broadband has been activated and fully set up.
Everyone has been charged 1e for the line rental. Sky have to put something down for line rental on the first initial bill, so that's why it's been charged. But you will be refunded that 1e on your next bill.
So there's nothing to worry about.
Now since you ordered on the 14th, then you should just be waiting on the hub to arrive, and then it's just a case of activating that and then sky talk will then also activate. So the hub should be arriving pretty soon imo. You'll receive an email and text from dpd when the hub is coming.
I think (but could be wrong) that the hubs are coming from Britain and therefore they may have been delays in shipping them due to the adverse weather.

Was it the Irish customer service that you were speaking to? Cause it appears that the person who you were speaking to didn't really seem to have a clue what he was talking about, in comparison to the people that I've spoke to at Sky.

    Meanwhile in the UK
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/01/22/sky_broadband_adding_customers_first_capacity_after/
Sky has confessed it has overloaded its broadband service by putting far too many Brits onto its network. The media giant told The Register that it has run out of capacity in certain corners of the UK, which has knackered its users' internet connectivity at peak times.

Subscribers to Sky Broadband Unlimited in Doncaster, North Wales and Bristol have complained of connections grinding to a halt especially in the past three months. This is despite the company promising "we'll never slow your Unlimited broadband down, even at peak times".

One user of the ADSL service went public to report that his or her download speeds dropped to 2Mbps:

I would'nt worry too much about that happening in Ireland. If you take the populations of those 3 areas, its more than the total population here.

No, it was the UK call centre I was talking too -- he didn't appear to know anything about the €1 or that it'll be refunded...

    ANYWAY :

Without warning today, the doorbell rang and it was DPD with my Sky Hub - no communications from them that it was coming.

The info pack with it said I'll be up-and-running on Friday, Jan 25.

However, I received an email this evening from Sky saying that my services - both Broadband & Phone, have been activated and I should connect my Sky Hub right away.

So from hearing nothing & getting a "delayed" message on "My Sky" it has all been delivered and switched on within a few hours today.

I'm typing this while connected with my new Hub and, although I was told I'd get "up to 10Mb/s" on my line, I'm currently getting 12

    Happy Chappie tonight . . . :D

Went from under 3mb to just under 6mb which might not seem much to some - but means HD Netflix now and much speedier general browsing

Oh and unlimited is comforting - no checking vodafone site at the end of each month to see if I'm hitting that 40gb limit again

For those of us on rural exchanges, Sky's entry into the DSL market has been a big boost!

(Now don't hammer us price wise after the 12 months !:)

I have had several conversations with the sky Dublin office and, have found them very efficient to deal with.
BTW the €1 is added AND then subtracted from each monthly bill.

My speed is still steady at 12Mb/s
