Let's put it this way, in terms of SHMUP smut, Radiant Silvergun would be somewhere in the region of Kelly Brook, not Linda Martin and her saggy neckskin.

I'm not sure where Cho Aniki would rank though. :pac:

Hey now, you could wrap that neck skin around you for warmth or use it for storage so there is something to be said for Linda Martin.

Hmm OK, I'll give you that one, her neckskin 'dances' like a swan floating across a moonlit lake somewhere between Skerries and that chip shop in Balrothery that looks like a Laundromat.

As much as I love Silvergun, I prefer Soukyugurentai on the Saturn. Its got it all - stunning visuals, addictive gameplay, amazing level designs and The Best Soundtack in the History of Shmuppery

    So there :p

    So there :p

Hmm... Just a sec...let me just get changed in to my smoking jacket, pour a fine aged Laphroaigh and light up a robusto H. Upmann.

*puts on a relaxing Jazz vinyl LP*

What we have here is my ever expanding SHMUP collection, please, I beg of you, allow me to 'puh-rooze' my library for just a few precious moments...

    *flip flip flip*

Ah yes! Soukyugurentai for the Sega Saturn. The usual refinements can be found here. Cello wrapped, SC-OCD, NTSC-J and so on. A true choice for the discerning 'chap' and a lover of good taste.

The disc itself is made from the very finest Columbian extruded polyvinyl. The manual is lovingly hand crafted by some of the finest printing mechanisms on the planet, Pantone compliant colours sensuously fuse themselves against their Mecca, that is the very finest 100g papier cut from mighty trunks that once engulfed the rain forests of Java.

Indeed, this is a welcome, homely addition to my collection.

    *sniff sniff*

Mmmmmm! The smell.......of nostalgia! The heady scent....of investment!

BLAST! I couldn't play Darius Burst last night. My PSP 1003 has 2.xx firmware (I forget off the top of my head) and to play it it requires a 6.XX firmware update.

I decided not to touch it and wait it out as I have a Pandora battery on the way to me. Is that the best bet though? Or can I update the firmware and downgrade it later when the Pandora battery arrives?

Bit disappointed with that it has to be said. I was really looking forward to playing it last night. Instead I settled down to a bit of Iridion II on my DS Lite. :)

You've bought the game so now you can download a copy of it and play guilt free.

You don't need to hack the psp to play games any more, just download a version of the game that has been signed and it will play fine.
Not sure if you need to update the firmware for these signed files though but worth a look.

Odd, I thought the 3000 series was still unhackable? Surely to get CF on any PSP you need to use the battery hack no?

Essentially though you're saying that signed files shoved on to an MS Duo will work on any PSP regardless?

I'm not an expert on it, but yes that's how it looks from what I've seen.

The original encryption keys were cracked and now people are signing files and just running on non hacked PSP's.

I've not done it myself but it looks very very straight forward to do.

Cheers Steve SI, I think then that I will do a little more research and if that's the case I'll update the FW and just play my original legit title.

Might give it a try on that game where that teacher kicks peoples heads in though, see if that works using that method and if it's worth buying at import premiums.

Hell no! She's busy watching Emmerdale, Corrie and some utter pap where Peter Andre is happy to help people or some guff like that. I'd rather eat my own skull than watch that braindead dross. :)

Just make sure of everything before upgrading the firmware.

Absolutely, will do. Heck, my Pandora battery is in the post so I can wait a few more days before I play Darius Burst. At least the Pandora method is proven so I know it'll be OK using that.

Well, I finally got my PSP flashed with the latest custom firmware and it only took a few minutes to complete. No need for a Pandora battery as I was on OFW 2.60, upgraded to 2.80 and then downgraded to 1.50.

Seemed a bit pointless on reflection as just as I was about to pop in a bunch of earlier CFW revisions I came across a great tutorial that got me straight on to OFW 6.60 and then reflash with the latest CFW 6.09-D (at least I think it was the latest revision CFW).

Maybe the 1.50 downgrade was worth it though as at that stage I was able to run the HEN exploit which I guess then opened the door to the simple upgrade steps. Getting HEN to take to the PSP was the hardest part, it took several attempts.

Anyway, the Pandora battery I can always keep in reserve should I ever need to downgrade or de-brick (God forbid).

Now to the fun stuff, I finally got to settle down and get stuck in to Darius Burst and my God, what a MIGHTY game it is! Thoroughly enjoying the whole spectacle so far. However I don't like the fact you can credit feed the whole game and not lose ship status. The weapon upgrades are smashing though and I like the extra difficulty element that comes with it. Sure, it's easy to upgrade your ship, but keeping it maxed out is very difficult!

The bosses are beautifully designed and all have completely outlandish names that are a staple part of Darius tradition. Even the controls are above average for a PSP game. The analogue stick works almost flawlessly except for a few hiccups when the action gets really intense. I only completed a straight run through zones A to H for my first attempt but even on easy the later levels were challenging, especially when you couple the bullet patterns, bosses and weapon upgrade system, and there's still a trillion more route combinations to see and master as yet!

Overall a fantastic game, one that I'm certainly going to be taking along with me for the daily commute and the odd lunch break! I'm not sure what the print run on this game is or is likely to be, but grab a copy now before prices soar, it's well worth the investment for any shooter fan I think. I am most certainly not disappointed with it.

Played Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire for the first time this evening, granted it's the PSP version, part of the PC Engine Best Collection and my God is it a tough game! Way more difficult than it looks on the YouTube videos I've seen of it.

I also put this down in part to the rotten PSP controls, the analog control just about cuts it, but it's just not sharp enough, leading to rotten overadjustments that end up in your ship being destroyed at the stupidest of moments.

Take all of that away though and my God, what a fine shooter doth lay underneath. I can see why it's so valued and prized on the PC Engine (along with the fact only minus 72 copies were ever made, all of which were distributed free with the purchase of 907 Cornetto's at a leading Grocery store somewhere on the island of Tahiti).

Superb game though, very addictive, very challenging (at least on the PSP) and visually stunning. Oh and the 'hair' metal and endless whiny guitar shredding is bliss. FACT.

Definitely grab a copy if you can, preferably the PC Engine one of course!

I'd have to play Sapphire in its original context mate, as cheap as it is on PSP in comparrison to the PCE edition.

I dunno, but I've become quite "elitest" as the years go on. That can be seen as quite a negative thing in some circles. I remember when I first got properly into retro gaming about ten years ago, I would happily buy loose cartridges and just experience games for what they were - games.

Then I started to only get games that were in good shape, with the boxes. Then I started cribbing about controls having to be right for a game, leading me to buying arcade sticks and more purpose-built control pads. Then I started having to have games complete and in very good condition, if not mint; complete with spine-cards and whatnot or GTFO!

Now I will only play games on their original format. I have no interest in retro collections or downloadable games unless I have the games on disc or cartridge. So I'm not buying Guardian Heroes or Sonic CD later on in the year on Xbox Live Arcade as I don't have them on their original hardware. I will buy Radiant Silvergun however as I have that on the Saturn. Once I have to two former games I wil download them as well.

I think that games are great fun to play of course, and this should be the primary motivator to buy games, but over the years I suppose I have begun to appreciate box art and enjoy reading manuals. Playing games in their original context really shows you how the game compared to its peers on the original system. To see the likes of Sapphire on PSP would be fine, and I've no doubt its enjoyable to play of course, but wouldn't doing that spoil the surprise of experiencing it as nature intended some day on the Arcade Card equiped PC Engine CD-ROM system?

For me it would. I want to play that game now, but I'm going to be patient, and when the day arrives that I have it on the PC Engine it will be a glorious day! Until then, I shall dream and ponder it along with my unborn original MVS cabinet, AES Mark of the Wolves, and Sega Saturn Hyper Duel!

Sapphire, for me, is an exception. Of course I'd love to own the original PC Engine version but it's harder to find than Brian Cowen's testicles. And then there are the bootleg editions. Lots of them. You might end up paying €300+ for a very good bootleg, how disappointing would that be?

I'm happy out with the PSP version for now. If I happen upon the original edition for the right price one day...

The thought of getting aboot for €300 odd is truly horrifying....

With buying the more expensive AES games, I ensure the obi card is included as its presence is even more assurance that the game isn't a conversion. I suppose, with Sapphire, if it had a spine card it would more than likely be the real deal wouldn't it? You'd hope so anyway.....

With any seriously large purchase where there is a chance of receiving a pirated game, I think the best course of action is to buy off a very reputable source, such as a collector's forum. I think I may end up buying my more pricey AES carts off Neo Geo.com or whatever its called in the future.

You should keep an eye on Arcade Otaku aswell, there's a bunch of AES stuff for sale there atm, you need to be registered to view this link.

Nope. There were 'legit' bootleg copies of the game (it's weird to explain but trust me it's true). That makes it even harder to track down one of the real deal. A 'legit bootleg' would be OK but you'd want to be careful on price, it's vastly inflated and some palm them off as the real deal.

A similar line can be followed with the Carnival caravan titles, especially Nexzr.

As for AES or MVS, ask the seller to open the cartridge for you and take photos of the board and chip serials. If they can't be bothered to do that for you, or question it, walk away. I recently turned down some nice MVS stuff which was likely legit, but the sellers attitude and utter horror at my request to open the cart just made me jog on.

One other tip. Read the whole advert. I ended up buying a bootleg Prehistoric Isle 2 because I skimmed the small print. The seller was at least honest about it. Many are not.

It's your cash at the end of the day. These items are expensive, nobody wants to be conned in to a bootleg copy of anything. If you're looking at something like the PAL edition of Kizuna Encounter though then a) you won the Lotto and/or b) you'd want the seller to put it in for VGA examination or travel to wherever they live and collect it in person.

    DONPACHI SS Sega Saturn .jp

€25 is this a good deal?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

Is it in good nick? SC-OCD? RC-OCD?

If the above doesn't bother you and the shipping is cheap, go forth and purchase. €25 is a decent enough price.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,067 ✭✭✭safetyboy

Just got Gradius Deluxe .jp and layer Section, my saturn hasn't even arrived yet so I will wait and buy food with the money until the Saturn arrives :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

Two great titles there sir, both great on the Saturn too. Have you considered an arcade stick for future purchase? I often hear that the Nights controller is good for shooters too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,067 ✭✭✭safetyboy

Good idea, what kind of prices do they go for, nothing like the dreamcast one i hope?

Before getting that virtua stick, I always rathered using the Saturn Nights 3D pad for shmups rather than the smaller 6 button ones. The D pad on it is really nice.
