Nikon D3000 dSLR in Argos reduced from €606 to €360

Was asked to reserve one in Longford and now the person has said they picked one up elsewhere.

Anyone interested I can pass on the Reservation No and it has to be collected by 3 May

Not a bad price for a B&M shop, it's currently 305 pounds on Amazon, which works out to around 344 euro.

That's an excellent entry level camera for someone looking to enter the DSLR world.

Im on the lookout for an SLR, its between the Nikon D3000 and the Canon EOS 550D:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0037KM0F8/ref=s9_ri_gw_ir01?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0P2QYAFYDSNCH7MXHG8B&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=230641727&pf_rd_i=468294

is the EOS 550D worth the extra €230?

The 550D is in a different performance category - higher ISO, fps, megapixels, HD video, compared to the D3000 which is camera intended to introduce DSLR photography to someone coming from the point n shoot world.

If you're happy with the D3000's specs, perhaps the extra bucks would be better saved for eventual investment on a camera that has the basic photographic controls (ISO, aperture & shutter speed) exposed as buttons on the body.

The 550D only has a dedicated ISO button, the rest must still be accessed by the menu system on the rear screen, a process I find very cumbersome from past experience. Both cameras fall short in this regard and in a few years you may find yourself wanting to upgrade to a camera body that gives you more control. If this is not a factor for you, have a look at the D5000, its mid way between both options.

Handling the camera will aid your decision, before buying online, go into a shop & use each camera to get an idea of the grip, shutter sound, weight and feel. You'll know which one is yours.

Standard to all discussions about the d3000, d5000 and d60: they will not auto focus with many lenses. Worth reading into before buying. If you only ever intend to use the lens that comes with the body, not an issue.

Any dslr made in the last 6 or 8 years will take at very least a year for a new amateur to outgrow so the thing that really really matters is how you like the feel of it. Everyone of them is capable of incredible, professional images

argos's huge discount isn't really true either, the 3000 got replaced a while back and nowhere that updates prices on a regular basis sold it anywhere near 600e recently

mawk is spot on about the lenses. The Nikon lenses that autofocus carry the new AF-S designation, the older AF lenses did not, so when buying a lens its useful to keep this in mind. There's a lot more information on Nikon lenses at Ken Rockwell's site.

    Enjoy your Nikon!

They also have the Fuji S1730:

I'd be interested to hear any views on this, I'm on the lookout for a new camera. I currently have the following:

I would like a step up from this.

them cameras are not in the same league at all......

I got the then discontinued nikon D40 (older model again) 3yrs ago at the same sort of discount from argos, its still goin strong & despite multiple replaqcements, ive still no need to upgrade. The D30000 would make a great camera from anyone getting into photography or stepping up from a point & sho(I)ot .......
