Whatever happened to packs of 2 toilet rolls?

I remember back in the 1990s, in small shops, packs of 2 toilet rolls were the most common offering and multi roll packs with 9+ rolls were normally only available at the supermarket, nowadays a pack of 4 rolls is normally the smallest you'd see and all small shops stock multi roll packs. Do you remember packs of 2 being the norm in the corner shop? When did you last see a pack of 2 rolls? Why have 2 packs broadly disappeared?

All down to reducing packaging, I reckon. Less wrapping going to the bin (or recycling if you can).

Laundry tablets, which came in a box and were plastic wrapped in pairs disappeared during the pandemic and never returned.

Also, there's no overwhelming need for toilet rolls to be packaged in plastic wrappers, a few companies have paper wrappers and many have cardboard boxes for larger quantities of rolls.

I'm having 3 sh1ts a day before lunchtime…. 2 packs of toilet roll be gone in no time…

For the last few years I've been buying my toilet roll in bulk from Amazon…. minimum of 45 rolls per order…

The stereotypical paper bag of shopping in old US TV/movies used to often have a paper-wrapped single on them (along with a french stick loaf and some veg, always).

You'd need to have no storage space, a shop very nearby and confidence in its opening hours to go buying toilet roll by the one.

You can't get flat packs of shiny toilet paper any more nor single rolls of the shiny stuff either. My grandmother used to cut up the Daily Express for absorbency

We buy in bulk now in case another virus comes along. This was the plan from the start from the Chinese you see. They control the toilet paper market the filthy divils.

It is likely that why 2-roll packs have disappeared widely can be attributed to changes in consumer preferences and selling strategies. Today, consumers are increasingly choosing to buy larger packages at reasonable prices, and manufacturers and stores are following this trend by offering more multi-roll options.

you won’t ever stop needing it until you are dead…. So I wouldn’t see the point in just getting a pack of two unless you were using public transport to get to the shop and back…..
