first day of spring tomorrow/friday, has anyone spread fertilizer yet, i have a lot of bare ground with ewes and lambs going to need it now soon, whats best to go with and should i be going out with now or next week or 10 days?

I’d probably go with a boat for the next week or so. Maybe get away with waders for a week then.

Fert will have to stay in the yard for another while with all the rain falling

Good question, as a lot of older farmers are used of ordering a bit of 18.6.12, and 24,2.5.10 for silage, if they don't have soil tests does that mean they don't have a p allowance this year. Or is that only for derogation?

If they do order PS in their fertilizer will they get a fine or what

First round done here about 2 weeks ago.

Went with 1 bag of urea to the acre. Got roughly 80% of the area done. Rest of it was abit dodgy for the spreader

I would have thought that a fair dose of stuff this time of year and very little growth yet. Think they recommend 1/2 bag an acre this time of year.

It's a fair spread I would be thought too but it does depends on what part of the country you're in too. ya couldn't get a quad out round here and our ground wouldn't worry reasonable enough incomparison

Submitted my fert purchases for 2023 to my advisor there now.

A derogation farm so this is what you do. I bought and used 37 units of N per acre last year.

I did buy some silage as I knew I'd be short.

I applied for the teagasc Signpost series of farms when they were looking for new victims. I never heard any more after the advisor walked the farm.

Still a free agent..

That’s a lot of fert used up out of your allowance. If we’re back to 220 kg of N allowance this year you’ve a fair shot of it used already

a lot of my land is index 3 and 4 for P and K what wood d be a good fertiliser for that land? it got plenty of lime the last 10 years. im soil sampling a lot of the fields again in next week.

Wait for the results. If you're good for P&K, N + Sulphur probably do a lot of what you need.

I see on a webinar that lowly stocked farms this year may only be allowed one bag of 18.6.12 this year.

This is from your Phosphorus allowance for the year and now related to stocking rate.

I was at an informal meeting recently of some high up in farming representatives. I mentioned how everything is going online in farming in Ireland and how some of the traditional base of farming were not entirely comfortable with everything online. A response was it's a decision by officialdom to create more farm advisor jobs. The trouble with these comfortable farm advisor office jobs is they rely on income coming from the the farmer. With more rules. It makes a farmer look for an advisor. But it also makes a farmer consider giving up farming altogether. Me thinks, some are getting too smart for themselves and are cutting the plank they've made for themselves and thought they would be comfortable on.

Most of mine is index 4 for both and an odd index 3. Not sure what I can or can’t buy but it’ll be slurry and urea or can only this year I’ll be using.

Lowly stocked or highly stocked shouldn't matter really. The goal should be for all farmers to get their P and Ks up to at least index 3 and the pH right too. If there's lots of animals on farm, that has to be taken into account of course for what you can bring in. But limiting lowly stocked farms to one bag even if the indices are 1 is total horseshit. Meanwhile, at the soil conference this week they were worrying about the fall in N sales leading to less P&K being spread and this leading to poorer soil fertility. Which road do they want to go down - get the fertility and indices right or restrict what yer allowed spread regardless of the data?

They want you to plant it or go organic simple as that these policies all boil down to virtue signals and by that I mean that they will create rules to control the dirty farmers who are poisoning the planet ........ it will make them feel good about themselves. And they won't have go change their way of life. Or so they think anyway
