This is something I never really realised which is strange because I was aware of the fact that his last 2 fights in Cage Warriors were for the Featherweight and Lightweight straps.

I think he should defend the 145 belt in UFC to shut up the people who are using the lack of championship defenses against him among other reasons.

With Conor, there will always be haters - it's just how people react to him, you either love him or hate him, very little in between. I would imagine a few successful defenses at 145 would make some of the haters quieten down!

McGregor is the FW champion but big money fights at higher weights dictated that he move up. The FW belt has then become a safety net, not just for McGregor but also for the UFC should Mcgregor get beat up outside of his weight division of 145. Its good business to allow him to move back down if his move up in weight doesn't work out. Theres no doubt about it though, the belt has been devalued but its the very same in boxing. McGregor is a big draw therefore it makes sense to have a back up plan. If he is a success at 155 and beyond then his FW title will be a distant memory and he will simply vacate. Holding onto it is his security in case things don't work out. For the integrity of the sport alone, if you exit your weight division you should vacate your title. Scratch that, maybe provide a little leeway if theres one superfight to be had at the weight above fair enough, but the next defence better be at the weight at which you are holding the title. Its simply going the very same route as boxing, where certain guys can hold their titles no matter who/what weight class they fight. And others without connections get stripped after 3 months for failing to fight contender X. Belts won't matter a jot.
Gamebred wrote: » Ok this discussion had nothing to do with business or money but whatever, its about someone winning a world title ie beating the current undisputed holder then people saying he's not the champ because he hasnt had a defence yet, absolutely zero to do with money or other divisions.
price690 wrote: » The only reason McGregor has been allowed to hold on to his belt is because he is Conor McGregor and he is a big draw for the company financially. Can totally understand why people think it compromises the integrity of the sport and the FW title. But its understandable from a business standpoint aswell. But it does cheapen the title no matter what anyone says. It may be one year (at least) before we see McGregor defend his FW title again, if ever. If he beats Diaz (which I believe he will by unanimous decision) he may decide to vacate his FW title at that stage and concentrate on 155 and beyond. Him holding onto the title is an insurance policy for both himself and the UFC no matter what anyone says.
