Clarke would be my preferred goalkeeper too. I just think he's more of a presence in goal, very vocal with the defence, and seems much more comfortable dealing with the high ball. I'd be interested to hear from someone who was actually at the match and saw how Robbie Hennelly got on though?

Great to see the new lads shine, really upping the ante on the other lads.
Never a black card for COC, hopefully no other injuries as we have a lot at the moment.

Good to get in and get the job done.

Very poor coverage from the Sunday Game last night, showing 30 mins of a game that was already live on TV, at least give London some air time and respect.

Diarmuid O'Connor named U21 Player of the Year. I know someone who has a few quid on him to get Footballer of the Year later on this year. Hopefully this is a bit of foreshadowing!

Anyone hear anything on Ger Cafferky? I heard myself that he was still some time away from being fully fit. He's someone I'd like to get back asap.

Seems unusually low key build up to the Galway game so far,especially from their end.I suppose the very average league campaign in division two,means expectations aren't great.Anybody think they could improve again on last years effort and pose a genuine threat?.

Its a local derby so I expect a challenge from them, will they over turn us, they certainly shouldn't, will they cause us problems, then I am sure they will.
BUT we really should be brushing them aside with a 5 point win on our own home patch.

I think it's quiet on their end because there isn't a whole lot to be excited about. They might find something extra though for this match and will probably have some sort of plan in place to try and beat us, but Mayo really should really have the better of them. Rochford should know a couple of the Galway lads inside out from his Corofin days too.

Walsh's job prob on the line this year, so they mite as well go all out for win.Afaik the looser has two weeks before qualifer which is better than the usual 6 or 7 day turnaround.Unlike say Kerry who sometimes underperform,especially early in championship,Mayo always seem to mentally prepared come matchday and are rarely caught off guard these days.lf I was Walsh,id be getting Pat Lamb & John Muldoon in for a chat.Hopefully we will also be interested in attaining their services come September :-).

Fait play to the hurlers. Thought Armagh might get the better of them as it went on, but Mayo found that little bit extra. Was good to see Keith playing the full match.

Totally went out of my head,there was a very good article by the excellent Michael Foley in last Sunday's Sunday Times titled Boyle's Law,evidently about the heartbeat of our team that is Colm Boyle...not Robert Boyle of the gas law fame.:D

It is great to see Keith Higgins playing for the hurlers given the great gra he has for the game and undoubted quality.

Yes, indeed, it is great to see him playing with the hurlers and winning with them too! I remember actually seeing him play hurling for Ballyhaunis years ago, when he was still a teenager, and everyone thinking he was a flier. If he'd been born in a county more inclined towards hurling, I reckon he'd have probably channelled his energy into that rather than football.

Mayo should be beating this Galway team by more than 5. Confidence is the lowest I've ever seen in 30 years following Galway. The 15 players that galway field against Mayo will be a long way off the best 15 players in Galway (for various reasons). It would be great if Galway were quiet because we felt we might sneak a win. However, the truth is we haven't a hope. We can't persuade our best players to get involved in the county set up while Mayo are off on week long training camps. The 2 counties are operating on completely different levels at the moment :-( a terrible reflection on those who run Galway football that they have overseen such a fall since the early 00's.

The only potential problem that Galway could cause Mayo is Shane Walsh - he'd walk onto that Mayo team (reflecting how good he is rather than quality of Mayo forwards). But other than that, Mayo are superior in every other position

I am not so sure about walsh yet. He has yet to deliver anything of real substance. He has pace and has the skill. I am not sure about his drive and when he gets a defender like keegan on him, he may shine under a different light. I am not sure if he likes the fight.
I think Comer has the potential to be a finer player. He is very raw yet but there is something in him that you know the drive is there and he cares. He has the makings of a real hard nut.

However, I was at most of galways league matches this year and he stood out a mile. He clearly is a division 1 forward. I have no doubt he'd be one of the top forwards in the country if he was a setup like mayos. It will be interesting to see what he can do against that Mayo half back line.

I thought Kevin Walsh would bring Galway back but I am not sure of it now. I just think you guys have not moved up a gear. The problem with Galway is that you are looking to Walsh and Comer to do the business for you. It would be different if these two guys were in a good setup and were integrating into an established forward line. I have heard lots of doubts over Kevin Walsh from galway fans and this could be his last year. I can see Galway giving Mayo a good test for a while but that's it.

Hard to see Kevin Walsh lasting after this year to be honest. His time in charge has been underwhelming (I'm being Kind there). However, a Galway have far deeper issues than management at the moment :-(

There were issues with the goalkeeping position earlier in the league...I'm presuming Hanley is no longer holding down the full back position.

The thread is usually more hurling focussed but it varies. Dont forget Galway hurlers were in action at the weekend so naturally hurling is the main talking subject then. In saying that both footballers & hurlers are in action on weekend of Galway & Mayo and I'd expect that hurling will probably form the bulk of the conversation there. Just happens that there are more posters into hurling than football on that thread. I guess that is also reflective of where the footballers are at the moment.

Lundy is in USA so not available this year. O'Griofa is injured last I heard.

Goalkeeping issues persist and I have no idea who will be in goal for the Mayo match. I think Manus Breathnach played most league matches (he was same goalie who messed up against Mayo last year).

Hanley is still part of the panel but did not start in the league. Our full back during the league had a very tough time so I wouldnt be hugely surprised to see Hanley back in there (or come on when the Mayo no. 14 is giving the Galway lad a complete roasting after 15minutes....).

Flynn is likely to start midfield. O'Curraoin has struggled with fitness recently so we might see Conroy at midfield.

As a Galway person, I hope I am wrong and that we can put it up to Mayo. I miss the old classic Galway - Mayo matches when both teams were around the same level. But it is impossible for me to see it. Mayo are probably the number 2 team in the country and it is some distance down to Galway. From a Mayo perspective, I'd be looking at how Mayo deal with Shane Walsh to give an indication of how they can deal with class forwards (which they will come up against if they meet Dublin), how they can deal with high ball into Comer (which they have struggled on before against Donaghy) etc. But this is certainly not a match that Mayo should be worried about. They should fully expect to be winning it against a poor Galway side.

I hear the hit by Boyle on comer is still sore and he is in for some rough treatment if the chance comes. I expect a few hard hitting moments in this game. Can't wait for it

I'd like to see a game with a bit of bite in it and a few rough moments. I think a good, physical game would bring Mayo on.

A routine win, a major tightening up on shooting and shot selection and a clean bill of health at the final whistle will do me fine.

If I was from Galway, I'd find all this talk of Mayo support hoping for a good hard game incredibly patronising.

Poker faces all round should be the call!!

Don't forget Galway were right in the game last year up until they conceded a Keystone Cops goal.
I for one had plenty to worry about during half time in that match.

And last year's match was thoroughly enjoyable because Galway were in it for a stretch of the game. I like watching good matches, whether Mayo are involved or not, and I'd hope for that going to this match.

I think that Galway tried the physical game with this Mayo team a few times and got done badly. Mayo have too much big game experience for them, a good shoulder leads to a Mayo man going down fairly easily and a free coming. If memory serves it was 0-8 to 0-8 at half time in Pearse stadium last year and all Mayo scores were from frees. Big AOS was getting most of them as it does not take much to get him to ground. Galway would be mad to try to take Mayo on physically, Mayo are bigger, stronger and way more cute. Hard to see any way that Galway can win this game.
