Putting family details on CVs

I recently had to go through a load of CVs for shortlisting and was surprised by the number of people who gave the names of their spouse and children and the ages of their kids - 'Married to Sarah, 2 children - Holly (5) and Amy (3)'.

Do any of you do this, and why? I can't imagine any prospective employer being swayed one way or the other by this information.

These days I do rejig my CV for the specific job, so I have a section for the most relevant work first with notes as to why X job is relevant to the role and then Other Work Experience in a smaller section below with much less detail.

It shows you're thinking about the job specifically and also makes that blasted year with no work much harder to spot :P

Totally agree. Can the odd woman be bitchy to an attractive woman? Yessum! But generally it's something that tends to be grown out of once we get past the teenage years. And even during the teenage years, good-looking girls tend to have loads of friends.

So I simply don't buy that attractive women would often be jettisoned at the applicant stage if adding photos to CVs was more prevalent.

There's loads of research on this and there's most definitely a correlation between being attractive and achieving a higher salary.

To be honest, I doubt whether most managers would be that aware of their staff's hobbies and interests outside of work, or use it as a measure of how someone would fit with the team. A team structure usually works best if its members have complementary skills, not because they're all interested in football or Tai Chi or vintage cars or whatever.

It's very difficult to ascertain who will gel with who. Sometimes you just click with someone at work and sometimes you don't.

The weirdest one I've seen was a person in their 20s who had stapled a photograph and photocopy of their Leaving Cert results to the CVs they were handing out for shop/bar work. Not sure who told them to do that, I can only remember 1 interview where anyone asked about my school results...

My sister works in the civil service and they always look for your leaving certificate results when you're applying for promotions. She says it's ridiculous; adults in their 40s and 50s with degrees and/ or years and years of relevant work experience racking their brains to try and remember what they got in Geography back in 1981.

Like many recent cringe-worthy additions to the workplace I think we can lay the blame for this firmly at the feet of our American cousins. The last place I worked for was bought over by an American multi-national and when our new American overlords came to introduce themselves they each gave us a powerpoint presentation. The first slide in each of their presentations contained pictures of their significant others alongside their kids (or girlfriend plus cats in one particular case).
