Tulsa have removed a child from it's grandparents because they are in thier mid 60's and it is preferable for Tulsa that the age gap between child and foster parents should not be more than 40 years.

Total nonsense. If I die, my siblings wouldn't be able to foster my children.

Nanny state gone mad. Ageist. Sure enda is 65 and in charge of the country, but apparently these people can't be left In charge of a child, despite teachers and doctors saying they are doing a good job.

There is a bit in the article linked that could explain more about the decision. It is about the mother being with the child over Christmas, perhaps the mother visits a lot, and the grandparents feel unable to stop her. This could be detrimental to the child. It is one of the biggest difficulties that family foster carers face, as obviously the parents are family as well, much easier for non related foster parents to have appropriate contact guidelines.

Would you still say that if the grandparent's health has changed over the last 4 years and the 9 year old had to do most of the farm work before and after school, like milking cows and being up half the night with birthing animals, then expected to keep up with school work?

Or if their declining health meant that he is doing duties for them that an adult carer should be doing? Or having to make his own dinner when he comes in from school?

There were six criteria that this couple didn't meet. We know what four of them are from the newspaper reports:
-they failed to demonstrate that they can seek and accept support when necessary.
-they failed to demonstrate ability to work as part of a team with the Child and Family Agency with a commitment to operating within relevant standards, policies and guidelines of the agency.
-grandmother's health issues are a concern.
-their advancing age is a concern.

They only publicly stated the very last one, but the previous three are the ones that would be more concerning to Tusla I'm sure.

There was a really interesting documentary on C4 about the Uk fostering adoption systme. They have fostering/ adoption events with all the children where the children and potential adopters can meet it was disturbing, but apparently it works.

They gave snatches of information about the children...a judge has ordered no contact with original parents until the child is over 18 and so. Then there was older parents who's teenage children want them to adopt the 3 year old they were fostering but they felt they were too old to meet the need of a 3 year old.

The whole issue must be so difficult.

If fostering is such an easy way to make money how come there is a shortage of foster parents?

Two specific guidelines that Tusla said were not met were: “Evidence that applicants can seek and accept support when necessary,” and “Ability to work as part of a team with the Child and Family Agency with a commitment to operating within relevant standards, policies and guidelines of the agency whilst providing foster care”.

Well the Irish public in their 'wisdom' voted in favour of the so called Childrens Rights Referendum a couple of years back. There were plenty of warnings at the time, not to hand the state more powers than they need or can use sensibly. The voters ignored this and voted YES.

Tusla will argue here that the Childs Rights & Best Interests require that he be removed. Problem is that they are the arbiters of what is best..

Ive worked in the corporate political correct world for long enough to understand these criteria are how you tell someone you are pi$$ed off with them. Allow me translate:

40 year age gap is the limit eh? so what about all these older moms & dads that are now in their 40s. Theres a 40+ age gap between a newborn and a 41 year old mother. Are Tulsa visiting them and taking their kids away?? Dont think they are. I'd guess that theres going to be a court case on this and Tulsa are going to lose horribly.

This smacks to me of somebody within Tulsa wanting to be a bit spiteful.

So individual social worker are vindictive individual who got in to social work to have power over people?

Actually in the case of these pensioners it's 499 (pension + 1 child dependent) +325 foster allowance + child benefit 140 per month

Nope, the pensioners aren't receiving the fostering allowance as far as I know, as the are not approved; that's reserved for the social workers mates

My aunt was a social worker in Manchester and she was one of the wisest and most loving people I ever met, so no, I am not stating that every single social worker is vindictive. In fact, I actually think this was more trial by committee rather than individual. Either way, from the facts as they have been presented either there is something that is not being reported, or common sense took some time off.

Taking a kid from a loving home and putting them in a care home is just wrong IMO.
But yet there are kids still with heroine addict parents and sleeping in blow up mattresses in homeless hostels for adults. The world is fcked up.

I wouldn't be so sure - I think you'll find the law and constitution are on their side.

But this was always going to be the case when you try to reconcile two sets of interests - the child's and the family.

The purpose of the Children's Rights Referendum was to shift more consideration towards the child's interests, away from the family. The arbiters of this are Tusla in the first place and maybe the courts thereafter.

We get what we vote for.
