Are ATM’s thick, or just taking the piss?

You’ve been there. The busy petrol station on a Monday morning. Five people queuing behind you at the ATM.

You insert your card. You wait.
You type in your PIN. You wait.
You request €20. You wait.
A message appears on screen. “You must request an amount in multiples of 50”.
You immediately begin to read the minds of the people behind you as you go through the entire process again.
You re-insert your card.
“Why is this idiot taking so long?”
You type your PIN.
“Is he checking his email on the bloody thing?”
You request €50.
“God, I hate this asshole. I want to punch him in the back of the head”.

The only thing that keeps you from squealing and running from the building is the knowledge that the ATM will snare the next idiot as it did you. The moral question of whether you should warn everyone doesn’t even cross your mind as you grab your €50 and flee from the building.

Leaving aside the fact that the ATM is mocking me by suggesting I could withdraw anything other than 1 multiple of 50, surely in 2016 it should be able to tell me proactively, when a certain bill denomination is unavailable?

There's a big difference depending on the age of the unit. Newer ones its a 3 or 4 second delay if the denomination isnt available, older ones you start again.

I wonder if they don't show available bills as a would be thief could imply roughly how full a machine is depending on how many notes are missing?

Contactless/cashback is great when its available! My only option in work is real walking around money. That €50 was my communion money

Why bother spending money updating software that perfectly fulfils it's purpose. Some ATM's will tell if there's no 20's etc

The AIB ones take forever to throw put a receipt,you have the money in your wallet and you're left standing there staring at the thing.

Or what has happened to me more than once, wanting to withdraw (say) €80. Error message. No 20s available, please enter a multiple of 50. Fine. I'll take out 100eur. Then.... 5 x 20eur notes are given out to me... aaaarrgggh

It annoys me that the BOI machines ask me if I want the screen instructions to be in Irish or English. Having to confirm that I don't want a receipt is a waste of time as well.

That's what I've always wondered. You drop your card in the city and say you realise after 20 minutes it's gone. One of our lovely locals could of picked it up and back 30 quid purchases around the place before you notice.

Can you ask for cash back with contact less without a pin?

If people start moaning when you are using one of these daft machines you turn around and punch them as hard as you can and say Its not me its the idiot machines, simples.

Shops are supposed to do a test cash and then the machine will work out if there isn't any say 20's in the machine so should only give the option for 50's! But most stores don't bother!

Contactless should be optional. I hate the way it's forced on you when you renew a card.

Last week I needed to withdraw my last €10 and it would only allow me to withdraw a minimum of €50.

Never used contactless but I'd prefer the old way of card paying.
