Thought I'd start this thread as haven't found one of the same.

So, 2010.. new decade... new beginnings? With the aim of the League being to get back into Division 1, could Clare also achieve success in Munster this year?

As well as a proposed friendly versus Cork, Ger O'Loughlin has a good load of matches to blood players from U-21's into the senior game. With the opponents in the League not posing a major threat some would argue Clare wont get as much preparation as Div 1 teams, but maybe it will give them an opportunity to focus on their strength and conditioning?

So, Clare face Waterford on Sunday at 2pm in Ballyduff Upper.. I think they should win against this weakened Waterford side, but I think it will be close tbh. But could Waterford topple us in the pre season tournament?

In regards to what is a foul or not, a defender can stand like a scarecrow and make themselves as big as possible if they want, if the attacker tries to go through them it's a foul but if the defender moves to try to stop the attacker it's a foul against them.

Fully argee, arguably our most important player. Hopefully he will be back at some stage in the summer, but this puts a dent on our Munster championship aspirations, no doubt.

Conlon could be out for another 10 weeks, might miss the full Munster championship - massive loss as he is having his best season

Ah, both frees at the end of normal and extra time were soft. And that would have been a very harsh red card. I've seen them given for that, but as a waterford fan I'd have been disappointed to see it.

All in all the ref was ok, disappointed that he wouldn't keep up with the game to allow a fast puck out.

Yeah, twas a tough one for Peter, it was only his first game back and he was completely out numbered. Id prefer Shanagher the next day, as he is a bit more mobile and shows well for low balls better. I think moving the balls more diagonal would be better next Sunday, it can change the point of attack and create space. Cunningham needs to be more closer in support like he was v Kilkenny.
Podge and Tony will hopefully be getting better going into their third week, we did see some sparks from them which is encouraging, I think it was always going to be tough for them in their first/second game back to reach the pitch of things, Waterford are a relentless team.

I thought David Fitzgearld had another great game at wing back today. If you take the last 3 games he has been involved, they have probably been against the 3 best counties and he has made an impact in all. I think he is beating out Bugler for that half back spot once McInerney and Ryan come back. It would be very hard to drop him, similar to O'Brien and Reidy (both good yeaterday), they have earned their spot on the team.

gavin is a trigger happy ref , he probably was one of the reasons the game was so stop start , he offerred very little advantages but when he meets his peers at the weekly assment in croke park he will get plenty of pats in the back as he got most of his calls right

which is a terrible indictment on our fouling and most of it needless , were well on top on a number of occisions , at two or 3 times were 2 and 3 points up and allowed waterford back into the game via stupid frees , galvin buglerand dillion seemed to be the bigest culprits

there is no doubt connor mcgrath took us out of the fire as none of the starting half forward line had great days , the likes of podge , tony , and galvin all had below par days , changes between cunningham or duck for duggen should have happened but didnt as all 3 didnt enjoy there afternoon

at the back bugs and cleary were exposed at times , the sweeper system saved there bacon at times , it was'nt until the introduction of morey and browne that the half back line looked assured

felt after totts and colin ryans introduction we still hit long high balls down on small men (smaller then there markers anyway) david reidy and david fitz along with patch and oisin obrien were also oure best but we were along long way off our best yeaterday and maybe a change of tactic needed the next day

Would have been a harsh enough red in fairness and I don't think it was fully intentional. When you compare it to the like of Johnny coen's tackle in the all Ireland last year and he only got a yellow even though he should have walked.

Kelly shouldn't have been sent off. There wasn't a deliberate striking action. It was silly, he got booked end of story. Referee saw it the same way.
When Kelly got levelled fairly, two minutes later he took it and got on with it.

The reality is that if the player going forward doesn't make some effort to evade the tackle then it's charging.
A defender standing his ground is different to wrapping the arms around the player. If the player defending gets sucked in to wraping their hand around the attacked then is a free.
A few years ago players would have had both hands on the hurleys to prevent the player coming at them, Referees then started giving frees against this, now it's wiser to open the arms and draw the attacker on to you.

If we're going down that road another ref might have sent off Kelly. And then you would have lost today and be facing into the championship match without your best player. But it was a borderline one.

Either way, if either team is coming out of there thinking the ref had anything to do with them not winning the match then they are going nowhere this year.

Yes the attacker dropping his shoulder is a clever way of making the defender look like hes challenging high. And in fairness we could never rid the game of the spare hand tackle but high tackles are definitely unacceptable and clares big defenders are being caught too bloody often.

No I'm saying you can make yourself big but by the attacker dropping his shoulder it results in a free which isn't right.

While I would have preferred a win, a replay isn't a bad outcome for Clare.

We have quite a few who haven't much hurling done due to injuries, who could do with another game, the likes of Tony Kelly, Podge, Shane O'D, Colin Ryan (did it look today like he was carrying a bit of weight?), Morey and so on.
Also not sure if any of Conor Ryan, David Mc, Conlon etc. can make an appearance.

Of course in the other side, Waterford probably welcome another game for Maurice or P. Mahony.

But nonetheless, another game for Clare might be beneficial.

I don't see how you are trying to get the ball if you wrap your arms around somebody or how it isn't a foul. It's holding or obstructing the player which is a foul.
